2009 MyBroadband awards announced

The most coveted award, the 2009 Broadband Provider of the Year, was won by Vodacom for the third year running.

I dunno. Since the selection criteria are so vague, it seemed to be more like a consolation prize.

I don't believe that any company still charging +-R200 per gig deserves to win this award. Add to that their dismal performance on interconnect rates, and the way that holds back rather than the advance the industry. They are one of my firm favourites, along with MTN, for Mampara at next year's awards.

The award is based on both broadband service levels
I cannot see it justified that VC get the prize - there network sux, a friend of mine ia busy installing ADSL as his VC
connection runs like a dialup

Wonder if I will get anything if I inform Vodacom off all the "dead" spots in JHB where my calls always get dropped. Personally I don't think MTN, Vodacom, Telkom deserve anything. Its like being the only person to do the comrades and then getting a gold when you finish it in a month.

The 2009 Fixed Broadband Service of the Year award was once again won by Telkom’s 4 Mbps ADSL service, with Neotel’s NeoFlex and NeoConnect Prime services taking second and third place respectively.

Seem a little like a Zim election?

And axxess now has joined the ranks of the despicable and unethical, for "stealing" the DigiChilli .co.za domain. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=3336435&postcount=350

You SUCK axxess!!

Amazing

I liked the moment rpm introduced the Mampara award.... sorry no-one was the to fetch it, jst for interest sake rpm r u gonna habd deliver the award to icasa?

"but like everything at ICASA, it takes 5 years to achieve anything, so maybe we will have an award for them in 5 years time." (or thereabouts, if memory serves)

Why don't we prove we can achieve something in a fraction of their timing, and send the mamparra of the year award to them TODAY!

If those are the winners then what were people thinking when they voted?
Seriously, Vodacom winning broadband provider of the year, come on no person can believe that really the case, they are thieves who charge probably the highest price per gig in africa!

Has the smell of a marketing sellout ... hmmmm

What a croc, farce, joke, hypocrisy, insult, mockery and waste-of-time. Have i left anything out? How on this planet can a reward like that go to VC. Clients of mine in Houghton cant use their phones at home - No signal for more than 18 months when at home.

Thanks for the feedback about the awards. I can understand the criticism, but when you feel that an award is not justified, please try to suggest a suitable replacement (Hence if you don’t feel Vodacom should have won, which company should have?). For these awards we simply take the feedback from the surveys and add up the scores.

I think an interesting argument is what Gatecrasher highlighted: should there be minimum standards for awards. I am personally not for it, since I strongly believe in competition and feel that as long as all operators are measured the same way it is good to have a winner and loser. There can however be an argument for awards where minimum standards must be achieved before the award is provided: it is not a particularly common practice, but is seen in some competitions.

I am also aware of the criticisms against Vodacom, but they have the most people signed up for internet/broadband out of any other provider in South Africa. That would not be the case if people put their criticisms above their choice of a provider. The fact is.. Millions of South Africa currently view Vodacom as their current best choice.

Vodacom's CS is top notch. How about all these people that are complaining log a call and see for themselves. They service a few million people a month, if something slips through the cracks, escalate it.

Agreed but honestly Afrihost should have won something! They were the first ISP to truly offer us cheap international bandwidth.

Axxess best ISP of the year? What on earth have they actually achieved this year? Except not too long ago caused a huge cry out when they moved from SAIX to IS without informing their clients.

Vodacom, I am not surprised they always win so it is to be expected.

However the awards this year don't seem very different from 2008 and I personally don't think it is fair.

I think Afrihost got into the game late to be really up for an award, but I also think next year they will probably take it.

I think this is sometimes what people miss. While there are complaints about service levels – for most providers – Vodacom has the most subscribers for various reasons, including extensive network coverage, making it easy to subscribe, special offers and the like. This all forms part of the ‘Broadband Provider of the Year’ award. While a company may have a single base station with great service levels, it will not be fair to say they have done the most for broadband in the country.

The question really is: did anyone else do more than Vodacom for broadband in 2009? From the survey results the answer is no, but maybe some guys feel the answer is in fact yes.

I for a second thought socialFlu will take the mampara award for the funniest and best failure
