I think an interesting argument is what Gatecrasher highlighted: should there be minimum standards for awards. I am personally not for it, since I strongly believe in competition and feel that as long as all operators are measured the same way it is good to have a winner and loser. There can however be an argument for awards where minimum standards must be achieved before the award is provided: it is not a particularly common practice, but is seen in some competitions.
Should there be minimum standards for awards? Yes. Definitely. It's the only way to go. Alot of the time, alot of us feel really screwed over by all the operators. Either we're sick and tired of Telkom, and running to iBurst, or Neotel, who turn out to be even worse, which makes us run to Vodacom & MTN, who aren't much better either, causing us to run back to Telkom, and start the vicious cycle all over again. I'm sure this has happened to lots consumers in the last 5 years.
Why should any of these operators be singled out as a winner, when clearly, in the minds of many consumers, none of them deserve it. There should be minimum standards, and each year the bar should be raised a little bit. If none of them can be singled out as a clear winner, then it should be announced: 2009 - NO WINNER. YOU ALL SUCK. TRY AGAIN NEXT YEAR.
Also, you can single out those operators who's standards are above or below this minimum bar. For example
2010 Awards:
1. Telkom
2. Vodacom
--------------
3. MTN
4. iBurst
6. Neotel
Telkom wins the best provider of 2010. Well done. Vodacom did pretty well too. MTN you suck. You didn't even make the minimum standards. iBurst, Neotel... we have no words for you...
