Please Not Again

In that event, says Israel, it will strike back with double force. A war of this sort could easily draw in Syria, and perhaps Iran. For the moment, deterrence keeps the peace. But a peace maintained by deterrence alone is a frail thing. The shipment to Hizbullah of a balance-tipping new weapon, a skirmish on the Lebanese or increasingly volatile Gaza border—any number of miscalculations could ignite a conflagration.

Keep the Rockets Coming

ISRAEL has enjoyed unusual quiet on its northern and southern borders since its short, bruising wars against Hizbullah, the Lebanese guerrilla force, in 2006, and Hamas, the Islamist Palestinian faction ruling Gaza, two years later. Yet many fear that the calm is illusory. “The next round won’t be focused on one theatre but rather will incorporate two or three,” warned Israel’s outgoing head of military intelligence, Amos Yadlin, in November. “It will be much bigger, much wider in scope, and with many more casualties.”

The Winds of Middle East War

On February 3, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem brashly told reporters: "Don't test the determination of Syria, you Israelis. You know that war this time would move to your cities." Even among Israel's detractors in the Western media, Muallem's remarks caused a stir, with ABC News noting that, "The threatening language implied Syria would be willing and able to target Israeli population centers with long-range missiles in a conflict. It was the first time such a threat had been made."

If you didn't see a (big/proper) war in the middle east coming then you'd have to be a fool... If the oil fields freeze up, then welcome to world war 3 ;).

Bring on the fireworks! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahooooooooooo!

you think ? wwIII has already started, a nuke of three will end it.

Oh the drama. I think you people misunderstand the region. There will no major war in 2011 or the next few years. The Arab countries are too afraid to challenge Israel. Smaller groups may fight against Israel, but as for an entire state (like Syria) going to war with Israel, I don't see it.

The Status Quo will remain. We'll see more of the same, worthless threats from the Arabs and Iran; and more settlement building and continued oppression of the Palestinians.

I think we have come full circle. The Arabs (even the hardliners) finally realise Israel is not going anywhere. The moderates are ready to strike a deal for peace (which the hardliners will accept), but Israel is not willing to go there. I don't know why, maybe under the control of the Israeli Right, they want all of the West Bank or maybe they just don't believe the Arabs are genuine. Whatever the reason, they're missing a great opportunity. If time hasn't run out yet on the 2 state solution, it will very shortly.

There are a lot of Middle East leaders who have very big mouths but when push comes to shove, they can't do anything. They can't really win wars (including Israel) and they can't make peace. They are Impotent!

I’m no supporter of the Israeli state, they have big mouths because they are backed by Washington. That said they held their own during the 6 day war so if someone wants to step up to the Israeli’s they better have lots of big sticks to swing and be well trained.

I don't think they 'held their own', I think they whipped the arrogant/naive arabs butts in the 67 war, but if you look at the negative impact of recent wars, i.e. the bombing of Lebanon (war with Hezbollah) and especially the war on Gaza (where they along with Hamas, commited war crimes), you have to wonder if those wars did more harm to Israel in the long term, in many ways but most of all, in terms of global support, even Israeli's themselves question this. Israel is a vastly superior military power in the region, but there are only losers in urban warfare. Even the might US Military has realised this.

Militarily they will continue to whip butts if need be. The next war will be media-centred and they will not do so well there. The Israeli’s would be well advised to open a media front in which they can advance their views. They are not doing so well at the moment.

The Arabs states had the backing of the USSR. Unfortunately the USSR was more corrupt, incompetent and inefficient than their own dictatorships.

Until Israel's Arab neighbours embrace the same open western democratic system as Israel they'll never be able to challenge them. But if they did that they'd find there would be no appetite for confrontation with Israel in those countries because the problems afflicting Arabs that are blamed on Israel by these tyrants to stay in power will disappear.

Not true. Israel has a world class propaganda machine. Every time they do something wrong, the skilled liars like Mark Regev, Daniel Ayalon, etc go into overdrive on the world news networks spreading lies. The Palestinians can hardly speak proper english and don't understand how to resond to the rhetoric. However in recent times, the world has begun to see through Israel's lies. The pictures speak for themselves. Israel has isolated iteslf from the whole world including the Europeans. Now, in the quest for a few more settlements in the West Bank, they are risking their relationship with the US, the last remaining ally.

If Israel is so open and democratic, why does it oppress the Palestinians, over and above so called 'security' reasons. Why does it continue building settlements in the West Bank. If it wants the West Bank, why not annex it? When it finally does annex the West Bank, will it give equal rights to the residents of the West Bank or will they create an full Apartheid system?

The corrupt Arab dictators you speak of are fully supported by the US. That support keeps them in power. Those corrupt dictators clamp down on any opposition, hence forcing most opposition towards religious groups which enjoy some sort of protection. It's within some of these religious groups, that extremist jihadi ideology is spread. Rather than trying to fight their own corrupt leaders, which they perceive as too hard, they think/thought that attacking the US using terrorist attacks will force the US to rethink it's support for the corrupt Arab Dictators. This is an obvious fail.

US Foreign Policy is an epic FAIL too. Top US Military Leaders think so too, including that the US's biased support for Israel (thanks to AIPAC) hurts the US and endangers US Lives.

Basically, there are no good guys in this equation.

US Military - Falsely Led
US Foreign Policy - Biased/Fail
Corrupt Arab Dictators - Bad/Evil/Greedy
Israel - Bad/Evil
Idiotic Militant Groups - Bad/Retarded
Opposition groups in Arab countries - Cowardly/Stupid

This has not been my experience. The Palestinians ‘proof’ is all anecdotal, with heart-rending visuals of women and children speaking from hospital beds about the perfidious Israelis or spittle-flecked Hamas leaders ranting about Israel. No independent verification whatsoever (they just make it up as they go along). ‘The pictures speak for themselves’. Exactly. It’s all anecdotal. Pictures are all there is. Some violin music in the background and a mawkish storyline is the sum total of Palestinian ‘proof’. Newsflash – war generates heartrending visuals – anyone can do this. Independent verification of ‘claims’ is the key. Hollywood does visuals better than the Palestinians anyway.

Or (Aljazeera) interrupting people like Mark Regev when they try to give Israeli views and the dialogue gets uncomfortable for Palestinians. This is the problem, free-to-air TV stations like Aljazeera are pushing a very one-sided, pro-Palestinian view. Israel needs the equivalent.

Bad! Bad! Bad! They're all bad, bad, bad!!
Your world is very simple, eh.

Mine is rather more complicated.
