2011 Polo GTI Engine Issues - Advice needed.

That's retarded. You can buy a NEW engine for that price. Actually less tbh.
 
Thats only an estimate, worst case scenario.....

The other issue I have is that the vehicle is sitting at the dealership with the engine on the bench.
 
I have to wonder what the cost would have been had it been a naturally aspirated motor with similar performance like the 2L in the old Fiesta ST? Anyone know?
 
A full engine swop on the MK6 Fiesta ST came to about R42K, this was about 4 years ago.

Tell them you want a full break down of the costs in written form for this worst case scenario...

Take it to a second mechanic and ask them to price up the job for you.
 
Take the offer of goodwill. R20k isn't bad.

The twin charged engines were discontinued for this reason, happened to my wife's ex Tiguan but that was under warranty.

VW is picking up R60k on the bill....

Of course.. but that doesn't mean you can't get a second opinion on the bill and see if vw aren't massively overcharging for the work.

Yeah, and then the independent will **** it up because of the tolerances that they will miss.

The only guys I would recommend outside of VW are V&N Workshop situated in Pretoria north. The techies there were at VW for 11 years until last year when they opened up their own shop.

The one serviced all my cars for 10 years while the other who specialised in touaregs did the wife's car. Good guys and very professional.

Another thing to consider is parts pricing. If the work is done at VW they get preferential part pricing which means that I wouldn't be surprised that the cost if the engine is R120k for an external party.

But the best thing about taking it to VW is that you get a nice year warranty on the engine etc. And R22k is reasonable. I cannot believe you think that a proper job with such a complicated engine (clutches that switch between the blower and turbo etc) and ancillaries will be R20k if it were a simple Toyota engine then sure.

FWIW the wife's tiguan engine replacement was close to R150k. But that was a new imported block etc. So get them to fix it if they put in writing its R80k. You have recourse if anything goes wrong.

But either way, it sucks to be in this position with a car that's only 4 years old.

So you don't think VW will fsck it up then?

The mechanics at dealerships these days are generally 100x worse than independents.

There are many independents that I would trust with my vehicle WAY before I'd even begin to think about taking it to a dealership.
 
When you have a year warranty (proper recourse) I wouldnt care if they did. What worries me more is that the quote etc isn't being done professionally. Sounds like a mechanics thumb suck. And the comment about the engine being on a desk etc...

I say it's a bad position to be in because unfortunately all dealers imo lack skills, or to put it another way, the proper techies are few and far between. I've been fortunate in this area though. I didn't extend the warranty on my wife's car because I would have been forced to service my car at Hatfield Vw without these guys there, and it's last service was appalling (engine cover not replaced, they changed the brake discs but not the pads etc).

It honestly puts me off buying another VW, and I am what you call a Vw slvt.

I have no words. If you spend that kind of money on a car and it only comes with a 2 year/30,000km warranty you need to get your head checked. VW is showing some serious lack of confidence in their products with such ridiculous warranties .

It has a 3 year 120000km warranty. It's a 2011 so its more than 3 years old. Pity because for R8k he could have extended it. And with those engines, you need to.
 
That sucks, I would never buy a car with a useless warranty like that. 5 years should be the minimum and on performance models like the GTI it should be longer.
