2011 Polo GTI Engine Issues - Advice needed.

On an 80k bill they fabricated.

For all you know the whole job costs exactly 22k...your portion.

For context, a claim on my SEAT's engine for:
10 valves, head skim, seals, timing belt, tensioner, serpentine belt came to R30k
I don't think a new crankcase, crankshaft, pistons, bearings etc will be less than that.

If this any other brand it would still be under warranty. Even my Corsa Essentia came with a 5 year/120,000km warranty.

oh piss off with your VAG bashing.
Opel only recently started with 5 year warranties. Until they did, it was only Kia/Hyundai that did it.
Even Mercedes actually only has a 2 year warranty. The maintenance plan covers a longer period though, but it's not a warranty even if it has similar effect.

The fact is that VW sells cars with inferior warranties when you compare it to the competition. It is plain and simple. Had this been a Toyota/Hyundai/Mazda/Ford/Opel/FIAT etc. then it would be covered by a proper and reasonable warranty.

"All Fiat passenger cars carry a 3year / 100,000 km full maintenance plan and warranty." http://www.fiat.co.za/fiat-dealers.html#.Vo-FQBX5hGM
"a 3-year unlimited kilometre factory warranty" - http://www.mazda.co.za/buying/mazda-care-/
"A FordProtect Extended Warranty Plan is an extension of the Ford 4 year / 120,000km vehicle Warranty for a period of 2 years or 80,000km whichever occurs first," http://www.ford.co.za/ford-owners/ford-protect/extended-warranty
"Your vehicle's standard factory warranty provides cover for 3 years or 100 000 km and includes 24 hour Roadside assistance. " http://www.toyota.co.za/toyotacare/genuine-products

Anything else you'd care to be wrong about?

Meh, close enough.

Best go with the best then.

LOL

What a copout. Poor form. Once again, you stated your opinion, backed up by nothing more than your ill-informed ego, as fact... and when proven wrong... "meh, close enough".

Yeah, I handled that real graciously, like a pro

Look, back on topic, I feel for the OP - this is going to be a very expensive bit of school fees that he is paying. Let's just hope that it is not in vain.

Labour alone will be >50% of the R22k bill. I know it is not a direct cost to the engine, but the "mechanic" still needs a salary at the end of the month. Then you need to factor in additional overheads for the dealership and to cover part of potential future comebacks on this repair which will not be chargeable.

I'm not pro-dealerships, but it is a business after all.

We have no idea what the OP's intention is with the car when it's up and running again.
Maybe he sells it in 3 months time and then a new VW engine with warranty will be in his favour.

VW have quite a high labour rate, even when compared against the more premium brands, so I'm sure that forms a massive part of the bill.

R600 per hour now. Touareg rate is about R800.

Only going to go up this year.

Touaregs are higher rates. What is unfair is that the labour cost to work on a citi golf/vivo is the same as say a GTI or R. Doesn't make sense.

What I don't understand is how independent mechanics make money if they hardly charge hourly rates for labour.

Maybe special training (rare) and diagnostic tools. Also more complex - therefore more experienced, trained, rare and highly paid technicians. Silly but also can't get the chico crowd to subsidise that when their cars just need a hammer wielder to fix it.

Out of curiosity, what are the rates for other brands? Can you provide a list please?
