Remember what happened last time when the Sharks played the Crusaders...

Although the 'saders have lost many players since then (Dagg, Maitland etc.) but they will be too strong for the Sharks.

http://www.rugby15.co.za/2011/06/low-life-with-green-laser-causes-a-stir-at-loftus/

In Saturday’s do-or-die match between the Vodacom Bulls and The Sharks at Loftus Versfeld you might have noticed that someone in the stands thought it would be fun to bring along his green laser and point it aT people’s eyes, including the eyes of Bulls and Sharks players during the course of the match.

The laser was first noticed in the 37th minute when Bulls captain Victor Matfield went up to referee Jonathan Kaplan. The Sharks had just scored a try and Lambie was lining up the conversion when Matfield, after receiving further complaints from his players, said to Kaplan: “There is somebody in the stadium with a green laser and he is shining it into our eyes”. Kaplan’s response to the complaint was that Matfield should take it up with the Loftus Versfeld stadium manager and that he can’t do anything about it.

Early in the second half the same green laser surfaced again as Pat Lambie was lining up a penalty conversion in the 45th minute. This time viewers at home could see the laser reflecting on Lambie’s face as the Supersport cameras focused on him. Lambie went on to miss the conversion and again a player complained to referee Kaplan to which he again repsonded to take it up with the stadium manager. Immediately after the missed conversion social networks like Twitter and Facebook were buzzing with comments of anger and disbelieve. Some of the comments that appeared on our Twitter timeline included:

“@sharksworld: lovely… someone’s shining a laser at Lambie class, Bulls fans, class”

“@KevinMcCallum: Some piece of trash is using a laser to shine in Lambie’s eyes. He misses the penalty.”

Now, it is easy and understandable for fans to start blaming Bulls fans for this behaviour because they could only see the second incident that was caught on camera and not the first one involving the Bulls players. The reality is that this person went to the stadium with his little “toy”, with the goal to the try and disrupt players from both sides by shining it directly at their eyes. He probably also pointed the laser at the eyes of thousand of fans who was out there to enjoy the game and support their favourite team.

The misuse of these lasers, primarily used for business presentations and stargazers, are not uncommon and 2008 there were plenty of reported incidents, including Soccer World Cup qualifiers and UEFA soccer matches. In 2005 a US man was also arrested for pointing a laser at the cockpit of a small yet flying overhead. Most stadiums world-wide have prohibited the lasers but it is extremely difficult for security personnel to snuff out the lasers as it is no bigger than a cigarette lighter and is easily concealed.

As a final note and just to make it clear, this person is not a fan or supporter of the Bulls, Sharks or rugby in general. He is a goofball that was intent on spoiling the fun for thousands, even millions of fans with his idiotic and criminal behaviour. Some of these lasers are so powerful that they can cause permanent damage to the eyes of targets.

Should this person ever be apprehended, he should be permanently banned from attending another sporting event. Although the incident may not have impacted on the outcome of the game, this type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and unnecessary in any sporting code.

So the Stormers will play the Blues or Waratahs if the Sharks beat the Crusaders, meaning that the Blues and Waratahs are higher in week 1 of the play offs.
Looks like i will be routing for the Sharks to win for the Stormers to get the Blues or the Waratahs.
Well if the Sharks cannot do it against the Crusaders then we will have to do it the hard way then

just my 2c

http://www.rugby15.co.za/2011/06/superrugby-play-offs-explained/

There seems to be some confusion regarding the play-offs of the inaugural SuperRugby season’s new format. And we cannot blame you as we also had to take a few looks at it.

Most people believe that the Reds will play against the winner of the Blues vs Waratahs match and the Stormers will play against the winner of the Crusaders vs Sharks match. This is in fact far from the real scenario. We will try and explain it as easily as possible below:

As it stands now the teams are ranked from in a Top 6 log after finishing the round-robin stages of the tournament.

1. Reds

2. DHL Stormers

3. Crusaders

4. Blues

5. Waratahs

6. Sharks

Because the Reds and Stormers ended top off the log they automatically get Byes for the coming weekend and earn the right to host Home Semi-Finals. The other four teams will however battle it out in what can be seen as “Quarter-Finals” to see who will go on to the semi-finals. We’ll rather call it qualifiers to avoid confusion.

In “Qualifier 1″ the Blues(4th) face the Waratahs(5th) in New Zealand and in “Qualifier 2″ the Crusaders(3rd) face the Sharks(6th), also in New Zealand.

This is where it gets confusing because the Reds and Stormers will have to wait for the results of the “Qualifiers” to see who they will face off against. The winner of QF2 does not necessarily go through to play in Semi-Final 1 against the Reds, the same way as the winner of QF1 does not necessarily go through to play in Semi-Final 2 against the Stormers. This is because they are only Qualifiers to determine the Top 4 ranked teams and not traditional quarter-finals.

So, after the “Qualifiers” are finished the teams will again be ranked into a Top 4 Log to determine the Semi-finals. Obviously the Reds and Stormers will remain 1st and 2nd, but the “Qualifiers” will determine 3rd and 4th places. From here the semi-finals are determined, where 1st ranked will play against 4th ranked, and 2nd ranked will play against 3rd ranked.
These are the possible scenarios that can play out:

1. Blues beat Waratahs and Crusaders beat Sharks. So Crusaders are still ranked 3rd and Blues are still ranked 4th.

Semi-Final 1: Stormers(2) vs Crusaders(3)

Semi-Final 2: Reds(1) vs Blues(4)

2: Waratahs beat the Blues and Crusaders beat the Sharks. Crusaders are still ranked 3rd and the Waratahs are now ranked 4th.

Semi-Final 1: Stormers(2) vs Crusaders(3)

Semi-Final 2: Reds(1) vs Waratahs(4)

3. Blues beat the Waratahs and Sharks beat the Crusaders. Blues are now ranked 3rd and Sharks ranked 4th.

Semi-Final 1: Stormers(2) vs Blues(3)

Semi-Final 2: Reds(1) vs Sharks(4)

4. Waratahs beat Blues and Sharks beat Crusaders. Waratahs are now ranked 3rd and Sharks ranked 4th.

Semi-Final 1: Stormers(2) vs Waratahs(3)

Semi-Final 2: Reds(1) vs Sharks(4)

Final will simply be contested between the two winners from the two semi-finals with the highest ranked team earning the chance to host it at home.

I think this format hurts the South African teams personally...

The SA Conference has at least 3 or possibly even 4 "good" teams and the Aussie and NZ Conferences have 2 each...

And its also just too bloody complicated to work out who is going to play who at the end of it all.

What's Black and makes Blue and Red all over?

Firstly, well done to the sharks. A deserved victory.

To the fkn idiot with the laser: buddy, your handywork in no way helped the BULLS cause. In fact, it may even have made things worse. Hopefully your stupid conduct is not seen as a reflection on all BULLS fans. One thing I am certain about is that you are not a rugby fan. Fool!

To the sharks: it is nice to be a holder of both cups and I really hope you guys can pull it off.

According to the papers the laser guy was targeting the bulls well, during the first half when they were facing that direction.

to all those people who complain that the qualifier/semi format is too difficult, get a brain! or is it that rugby supporters really ARE the dimwits that others perceive them to be? i think not! stop complaining!

IMHO this competition should go back to a Super 12 format, with 4 sides from each country - nobody can realistically field 5 competitive sides.

Then everybody can play everybody else, and you can have normal semi-finals, etc.

Maybe there could be some opportunity for an outside team to challenge the bottom team in each conference at the end of the season.
