Honda Civic Type R revealed

Hot hatch concept has more than 280bhp, and will get round the 'Ring in less than eight mins…

You've seen our prototype drive. You've seen an Italian make it go fast. You've seen the teaser sketch. Now there's this - the official Honda Civic Type R concept, released today at the Geneva motor show.

But unlike some of the more far-fetched concepts you'll see at this year's Swiss exhibition, Honda says this design study ‘strongly hints' at the production version, which it's promising in 2015.

You want specs? You can't handle the specs. The new Type R will be the first model in Europe to feature the company's brand-spanking VTEC turbo engine. It'll come as a 2.0-litre, direct injection, four-cylinder unit that'll make at least 280bhp and be Euro 6 compliant. Blimey.

So, what about that Veneno-lite styling? Honda says it offers real performance benefits, which it's actually tested - the front and rear spoilers adds downforce, the vertical side wings and vents in the front bumper help to reduce drag and control airflow around the front tyres, and the front grilles have been enlarged for better cooling. The front and rear wings have also been pulled out to accommodate bigger wheels.

Then there's the company's bravest announcement yet. That the production version it previews will lap the Nordschleife faster than any front-wheel drive car in the history of EVER. Faster, even, than the Seat Leon Cupra's sub-eight-minute effort we announced yesterday.

We're looking forward to this one...

Some photos already posted earlier in this tread.

As much as I adore Honda and Nissan, Honda must make pretty sure that the competition is still not the better hot hatch solution when it comes down to parting with hard-earned cash.

**** me. Guaranteed over 208kw, and a sub 8 minute time on the 'Ring... and it'll will look close to that! I have the boner all over again.

Yeah I hope that the pricing will be good, but I am thinking in the region of R420 000. Which is not too bad.

R420,000 isn't too bad no, wonder what first year depreciation will be like.

Strange that all the other manufacturers realise that the FWD setup is inferior to AWD in a hot hatch, handling torque steer etc, honda is aiming at what exactly?

The pinnacle of FWD hot hatches before everything becomes AWD? A turbo Civic swan song before hybrid AWDs take over?

Not sure.

Well, Honda's do not depreciate all that badly, especially the Type R's etc. My car is a 2008 model. I still see some going for R160 000 on Autotrader. That is really not bad considering it cost R256 000 new in 2008.

Nice car, but I suspect by the time it comes out it will be the slowest hatch on the road, again

I've been looking at Type Rs on Autotrader recently (for ****s and giggles, the Accord is staying until at least mid 2015), their second hand market value is impressive. Not quite S2000 territory, but still great. Most I've seen are low mileage though (<130,000kms), wonder why that is.

The Seat Leon Cupra R will still slap it silly. :p
Yes. But its Spanish, what good has the Spanish ever done in terms of motoring and engineering? I don't get it. It's like saying you are going to buy the best Springboks stakes... From Latvia.

What are those? Do you kill vampiric antelope with it?

It's daft, why not take out abs and power steering?
It's old tech. It's like they planning to be the best in a stagnant pond.
FWD has limitations, trying to push the limits is a wasted cause.
Opel have upped their game to compete with the premium hot hatches. Hondas lost the plot IMO.

VW/Audi today announced their new 2.0 turbo, more powerful than the A45.

Opel have upped their game to compete with the premium hot hatches.
They have gone as far as mechanical limited slip differential and hydraulic power steering (as opposed to electric) which is working out fairly well, yet the new GTI has incredible road holding ability so Opel really had no choice.

Ah calm down, we have not even seen any road or track tests yet. I've heard the FWD story before and every now and again someone comes along to shut the critics up.

What would Opel's answer to the Type R be?

The OPC?

I don't understand your reasoning.
Awd is superior. Wasting time on a powerful fwd is just stupid. Adding a huge (ugly looking) rear boot spoiler, LSD, other aerodynamics because it's fwd.
The buyers will also modify the car further and realise they wasting their time and money on a fwd.

Besides that Seat fwd already did a sub 8 min lap, same/ similar horse power. That was built and designed in 6 months.

Have you seen the new GTI and OPC? Front wheel drive can defy the laws of physics... or that is how they make it look.
