2015 UK Election Thread

That's the problem with first past the ppst voting. Millions vote for UKIP, but they aren't a majority in any area. They are still loons though.
But surely proportional is even worse?

I very much prefer a constituency system to a national proportional roll as we have in SA. Brit MPs have a strong tradition of handling issues for all their constituents. The party vote only means something for large national policy and legislative matters. For local issues, the ordinary woman on the 79 bus talks to her MP no matter what party. And that counts for a lot in my book.

There was a referendum to replace this system and the Brits voted to keep it.

Fptp is applicable because the MP's are meant to represent voters in constituencies. Basically it's the same as the U.S. Senate except it's only 1 person per "state". I think it's a better system because it ensures that the different character of each region is represented and it also means the MP can't ignore the voters. A system like SA encourages "a cult of the leader" mentality and also means MP's need the favor of the party head honchos to get their job.
Yes , it does have its weaknesses. Either system has its strengths.

Might not even be a Con-Lib coalition. The bookies have the Tories getting an outright majority as of a few minutes ago!
The UK has had the best economic performance in Europe and that was always going ensure they would be the largest party. It looks their pledge to pump more money into the NHS might just push them into a majority. The NHS has always been their weakness.

And they pledged an EU referundum. It will be good to get this out of the way. If the result of that referendum means a UK exit from the EU, then Scottish independence will be back on the table.

I'm glad the conservatives have taken this relatively convincingly. All the major parties are pro-EU, as is business in the UK. An EU exit is extremely unlikely.

Labour suffered in the English marginals due the possibility of an agreement with the SNP. Great news!

Well done to the Conservatives for locking out the Labour-SNP. First election for a generation where the incumbent has returned more seats than in the previous election.

I'm not sure of your point, the LibDems actually lost seats in the 2010 election (62 in 2005, 57 in 2010).

2005 was also a protest vote. It was an anti-war vote mostly. Remember, the Lib Dems where the only party to oppose the Iraq war. It was the election where Blair was meant to be punished. The controversy about 2005 is that the lib dems increased their share of the popular vote to almost 25% but got fewer seats. UKIP are e experiencing a similar thing now.

Labour did win seats in this election which they had lost previously. Tellingly most of those are from the Lib Dems, which is why I think the Lib Dems have not really ever had a large following. They have also lost all of the their Scottish seats now, I believe. Thats probably the bigger blow.

EDIT. Lib dems still hold the Orkney Islands in Scotland

Wonder how much of the SNP's rise has to do with there not being another viable Scottish party. Tories, Labour and Lib Dems are all English.

Or tactical voting to make sure Labour get solidly shafted, which basically guarantees that the Tories at the very least have more seats than labour.

Yeah. This. SNP whitewash is just a temporary illusion

A pity UKIP did not get more seats.:(

Yip, a great injustice...people always complain how Labour and the Conservatives are the same and then reject the chance to elect someone who is outside of the Westminster mould...lol.

Nevertheless, still super glad that the Conservatives are the largest party by a mile!

Nigel Farage has failed in his bid to become an MP, which he vowed would trigger his resignation as Ukip leader.

In an extraordinary show of support the party became Britain's third party as it secured as many votes as both the SNP and Liberal Democrats combined yet is likely to be left with just two MPs.

But Mr Farage was beaten by the Tories in his target seat of South Thanet, leaving the party without the charismatic figurehead who propelled his self-styled 'people's army' into the heart of the political establishment.
