Audi is the new Volvo. You'd need to have no soul to buy one these days. They're so boring you're actually making the road a less safe place, as other motorists could fall asleep at the wheel if they look at your car too long.

Not sure which BMW or Merc it'll compete with but - like last model - will probably be the King of the hot hatches

I can see mild differences, extremely mild. Like the car, it is mild.

It would be great if manufactures could collaborate on a single model as some entry level cars have done.

Imagine Audi and Opel? You'd get an awesome looking OPC with a cracker of engine and engineering to boot.

Right now, that's one thing lacking on the OPC... real underpinnings. It is a decent basic car, I guess

Though aesthetics wise there is nothing hot about that hatch. I find it pretty boring to be honest.

What I mean is the OPC is supposed to be their hot hatch of every range. There are even OPCs not available locally that are supposed to be hot in their own range.

I think the OPCs actually look decent, but they're not hot, no matter what Opel try.

Looks like the 2006 one.

:D

You guys must be blind. Granted, the last two models were both the same generation (8P), with the facelift coming in 2008 - 2009. Only minor cosmetic differences, so of course they look similar. Just the way BMW and Merc etc. facelifts look similar too.

The latest is a new generation, and looks entirely different.

Much better interior...

It looks better in photos, perhaps in design too, but the previous 8P interior was of much higher quality.

They're different classes of car. Anyone would. I wouldn't take an Audi over any competing car though.

Roux probably wouldn't.

Anyway, depends on the class. I'd take an A3 over a 1 series or A class, a (current) 3 series over an A4 or C Class, a (again, current) 5 series over an A6 or E Class, and a S Class over an A8 or 7 series.

Agreed on the first two examples.
Would rather have an E over the 5 or A6, and an A8 over the S or 7 series.

Point is still valid. Certain classes have clear leaders, as the A is really blegh and overpriced, the A4 is an outdated model, any Merc other than the E has a horrible rear, and anything above a 4 series BMW loses the styling plot entirely.

It's actually shocking how Audi aren't industry leaders in any particular class of luxury vehicle.

Some examples:

Hatchback - GTI, V40 or 1 Series
Small coupe - 2 Series
Sedan - 3 Series or C Class
Ultra sedan - S60, XF or 6 Series Gran Coupe
Limo sedan - XJ
Convertible - Z4, SLK Class or F-Type
SUV - RR Sport, possibly X5

I dunno. As I said, in the hatch category I'd much rather have an A3 than any of the competitors.

And in convertible/sports coupe I'd probably take a TT over the Z4 or SLK.

What criteria are you using to determine whether a particular car is an industry leader in any particular class? Purely your taste?

Obviously taste will always play a part, but I do consider the aesthetic appeal, the interior, the general opinion of most reviews etc.

The new TT is fugly as hell. Wouldn't touch it. The A3 is unacceptably dated now. I think you'd be mad to buy one if you have any concern about resale value. A genuine Audi redesign is inevitable in a year or two after so many stagnant years, and then the old looking new cars will suffer.

Bottom line is that it still does not have the class you get with a BMW or Mercedes. It is a glorified volksie for those who think they are different, but sadly can't see how dull and mainstream they are, or they just don't care.
