My missus' current car, a 2005 Opel Meriva with 250,000 km on the clock, is getting a bit long in the tooth. My dad, who's visiting from the states, has been renting a Spark and we've all found it more than adequate for what my missus needs so we're looking at getting her a new or demo model.

Any thoughts or concerns we should consider? She basically wants a city runabout to do the groceries and school runs. I have a Captiva which she can drive but prefers not to due to it's size.

We're looking at a budget of R130,000 ideally.

Just to find out from your States Dad if he is not ranting about the all-new model not yet out in SA:

Or the current SA model.
He's been renting, not ranting ;)

The first car the rental agency gave him was a i10. None of us were impressed with that car. I put it on par with the Datsun Go I hired a few months back. The Spark seems much peppier, especially when confronted with the hills we regularly navigate.

Haha...one letter makes all the difference...hey

My buddy has a current shape Spark before he crashed it.

In my view I would take the Spark over the i20; Picanto combo in the entry level segment.

If size is not a deal breaker then the 5-door Up! or latest Aygo.

Lastly the latest Sandero is much better than the previous shape.

Either way the Spark is a very good choice as a small urban runabout.

Running costs; reliability; insurance; fuel economy.

Thanks - I'll have a look at the Up! and Aygo.

Lots of people will disagree with me on this go test drive Honda Brio nice little car. It has everything you need in a standard run around car the only downside is the back and boot size. You also get best service from Honda.

You can also look at Suzuki Swift and Hyundai i10 Grand

Thanks but the Honda is just too ugly.

We hired the i10 for a few days before they replaced it with the Spark - no thanks.

I do like the look of the Suzuki though...

My wife has had a Spark since 2014, it's not big but I can drive it quite comfortably. The seating feels higher up then most other. Fuel economy is great for city commuting, horrible on the open road though.
Insurance is cheap, we've never had to take it in for anything but it's yearly service. Where as my Cruze had two recall items fixed in 2015 :(.

Ouch that hurts hey "Honda Brio is just too ugly" what is ugly about that car beside the glass tail

Lol Ockie you don't miss your little mini I see you enjoying the new wheels

Ouch so only the glass tail turn you off. Go test drive Suzuki Swift nice car but also small boot.

Does it have to be a 2016 vehicle? You can get a much better vehicle for R130k but will be a few years old.

The Up! Is a nice car, though I still don't get the no love for the Spark, I wasn't a fan until I had one for 2 months as a rental. For the price at the time it's good, comfortable, fuel efficient, can park it in most shopping centres with those tiny bays :).
The present one in SA is nothing like the QQ3 shaped one

Finding a 2nd hand Spark LT locally is proving to be more difficult than I'd thought.

We looked at the Mahindra kuv100 and that thing was pretty bad so we're going to keep looking.

+1 for the brio, but MYBB's hate it for some odd reason I can never fathom....
the suzuki is also quite good, aygo isnt bad,

So you rather go look at Mahindra and you say Honda Brio is ugly you need pair of glasses.

Yeah Mybb hate Honda Brio but none of them can tell give you a valid reason why he/she hate brio they use same excuse over and over the glass tail.

Lol at least I'm not only one in the road driving little brio the are few at work and around my town
