Customers who have ordered the all new Ford GT are yet to receive their deliveries but already there is a heritage model to pay a special tribute to the 50th anniversary of the historic 1-2-3 win the GT40 achieved in the 1966 Le Mans. The special edition includes new detailing to the interior and exterior. According to Ford’s chief technical officer, Raj Nair, a tribute model for the GT was always part of the plan.

The Ford GT ’66 Heritage Edition is coloured with a Shadow Black paintjob in either gloss or matte finish according to the customer’s request with silver stripes and an exposed carbon fiber package. Accenting is provided by the Frozen White #2 hood and door graphics and 20-inch one-piece forged aluminium wheels in a gold satin clearcoat with black lug nuts. This is to mimic the Le Mans winning GT40 from 1966.

Inside, drivers are greeted by a carbon fiber leather seats wrapped in ebony leather with pillowed inserts and plow-through stitching. The head restraints and steering wheel also sport the Ford GT logo. The steering wheel is also covered in leather with blue stitching to mimic the racecar. To confirm this as a limited edition model, a unique serialized identification plate is attached to the car.

There are no performance upgrades so the model will retail the turbocharged 3,5-litre V6 delivering 450 kW to the rear wheels.

The all-new 2017 Ford GT will be available in a limited-edition Heritage theme honoring the GT40 Mark II driven to victory by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon at Le Mans in 1966 - part of the historic 1-2-3 Ford GT sweep. The car will feature unique interior and exterior color themes, and an exclusive wheel finish.

"Celebrating the anniversary of Ford's historic victories at Le Mans has always been a part of the return of the Ford GT," said Raj Nair, Ford executive vice president, product development, and chief technical officer. "The 2017 Ford GT '66 Heritage Edition is a stunning tribute to the car that kicked off Ford's string of Le Mans victories in 1966."

The Ford GT '66 Heritage Edition features a Shadow Black exterior in either gloss or matte finish with silver stripes and exposed carbon fiber package. The car sports Frozen White #2 hood and door graphics, and 20-inch one-piece forged aluminum wheels in a gold satin clearcoat with black lug nuts.

The interior of the limited edition model wraps the Ford GT carbon-fiber seats in Ebony leather, with pillowed inserts and plow-through stitching, and the seats' head restraints and the steering wheel are debossed with the Ford GT logo. The instrument panel, pillars and headliner also features an Ebony-leather wrap, with gold appliqués on the instrument panel, the seat's X-brace and shift paddles. Like the 1966 race car, the steering wheel is leather wrapped, with seat belts featuring a unique blue webbing.

Rounding out the modifications to the Ford GT '66 Heritage Edition are a unique serialized identification plate, the #2 interior door graphic, and exposed matte carbon fiber door sills, air register pods and center console.

Garen Nicoghosian, exterior design manager for the car, says the team set out to highlight where it all started with the Ford GT. "While the looks are distinctly based on the GT40 Mark II race car," he says, "we've accentuated new styling cues to provide a modern interpretation."

Ford GT supercar requires $30,000 in dealer service center upgrades

A special car requires special service, or so Ford dealers are finding out. Not every dealer will have the privilege of handling the upcoming $400,000 Ford GT. Those interested in servicing Ford's supercar will need to spend at least $30,000 in service center upgrades. That's according to a dealer document obtained by All Ford Mustangs.

The document lists a number of changes dealers must make. For example, an exclusive Ford GT clean room must be built or converted from existing facilities. Only a certified Ford GT master technician and Ford GT sales representative are allowed inside. A special set of dollies must be purchased in order to move the car. The dollies will mount at specific points on the carbon fiber tub to balance the mid-engined car and prevent damage. Other items needed include a tire mount that can work with the carbon fiber wheels and a specific jack for the transaxle.

A car trailer must be purchased to transport GTs from their owners homes or offices. Transportation services will be available to any Ford GT owners for warranty repairs, although not all services or repairs can be performed at the dealership.

The document lists repairs and maintenance under three separate tiers. Basic services like an oil change can be handled at the dealer. As the levels escalate, so does the level of outside involvement. Multimatic, the company that's assembling the new car, will send a "fly-in-doctor" when needed. If major repairs are required, Ford will ship the car back to Multimatic's facility in Canada.

Special tools and traveling technicians are nothing new to the supercar business. Only certain dealers can service the Dodge Viper. BMW only allows certified technicians to maintain the i8. Like Ford, Bugatti will fly people out in order to properly service and handle its vehicles. Ford already vetted future GT owners. These buyers should expect a supercar level of service from the most expensive car Ford has ever built.

I wonder if Shmee was lucky!

First UK customers for Ford GT now selected

The first confirmed UK customers for the new Ford GT have been contacted by email to tell them their request to buy the car has been accepted.

A total of 6506 global orders were received for the model by the time order books closed in spring, but Ford has said just 500 cars will be built in the first two years of production. Today's email confirms Ford has now begun to allocate the slim selection of cars to the first 500 customers.

The email sent to successful applicants today states: "Your passion for performance and for the Ford GT qualifies you to be among a small number of drivers selected for the opportinity to own a new Ford GT. We are thrilled to extend you this opportunity!"

These selected applicants will now be able to confirm their orders. The first deliveries of cars are expected later in 2016.

Another batch of 500 cars will begin production after the first run is completed some time in 2018. Order books for those units could reopen in just under a year's time.

Ford picks buyers based on responses to a questionnaire, with a preference given to prospective buyers who will drive the car regularly, rather than collectors who may not take it out on to the road.

Ford has already confirmed that production numbers of the new GT will be far fewer than that of the previous-generation GT, of which 4000 units were made. Global production will be limited to 250 units per year and fewer than 20 of those are tipped to reach the UK annually.

The launch of the GT online configurator is a likely source of some of the interest, although Ford has enjoyed a positive reaction to the car since its debut at the 2015 Detroit motor show.

The new car ditches its predecessor's V8 engine in favour of a twin-turbo 3.5-litre Ecoboost V6. Ford claims a power output of more than 592bhp.

Prices are tipped to start at €500,000 (around £395,000) although Ford has yet to confirm this officially. Such pricing would put the new GT well above the Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and McLaren 675LT.

Ford doubles GT production run to four years

Ford Performance has announced that it will add two more years of production to the initial two-year plan for the new Ford GT.

The announcement comes after the automaker sent rejection letters to thousands of applicants.

“While we can’t build enough Ford GTs for everyone who has applied, we are going to produce additional vehicles in an effort to satisfy more of our most loyal Ford ambassadors,” said Dave Pericak, global director, Ford Performance.

Although the news effectively means the eventual number of carbon-fibre GTs on the road will double, Pericak emphasised that the plan was to keep the vehicle “exclusive”.

“We want to keep Ford GT exclusive, but at the same time we know how vital this customer is to our brand,” he explained.

Year three of production will support applicants who were placed on the initial waiting list. Meanwhile, previously rejected applicants and those who missed the initial application window will be served by production year four.

The application process for fourth-year production will re-open in early 2018, but those who have already applied to own the car will only need to update their request, said Ford.

Lego models of Ford GT and GT40 Le Mans winners revealed

If a road version of the iconic Ford GT40 or cutting-edge GT is beyond your budget, how about a Lego recreation for £29.99?

The Ford GT and GT40 racing cars that were victorious in the 2016 and 1966 Le Mans 24-hour races respectively are being honoured with Lego versions.

Ford’s two most famous racing sports cars have been designed in collaboration with the Blue Oval’s design and licensing teams.

The GT and GT40 will be available as a set that also includes racing driver figurines, a chequered flag and a winner’s trophy.

The GT40 MkII took first place in the 1966 Le Mans 24 Hours with Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon driving. Half a century later, the GT of Sébastien Bourdais, Joey Hand and Dirk Müller claimed victory in the GTE Pro category at the famous endurance race.

Dave Pericak, global director of Ford Performance, said: “Many people in my team grew up with the legend of Ford’s history-making 1966 victory and experienced the excitement of building and design for the first time through Lego bricks.

“This kit is a powerful way to tell our Le Mans story and will hopefully inspire the race drivers, engineers and designers of the future.”

Leading Lego’s design team was Craig Callum, a former car designer who races a Ford Model A hot rod in his spare time. Callum helped to develop 10 prototypes, from which the definitive versions of the GT and GT40 were selected.

He said: “This was a dream project with a lot of pressure. The Ford GT40 is one of the most iconic racing cars of all time, and the new Ford GT is just incredible. We know these models will be closely scrutinised for authenticity.”

The new model set, part of the Lego Speed Champions range, will be available to order from Lego’s online shop from 1 March 2017 at a recommended retail price of £29.99.

A Ford Mustang Lego set is also available, alongside a Ford F-150 Raptor with a trailer and a Ford Model A hot rod.

First Ford GT customer car rolls off production line

More than 6500 people applied to own one of the first batch of Ford GTs; the first car is being built in Ontario today

The first Ford GT customer car has rolled off the production line today, almost two years after the initial pre-production car was revealed in Detroit.

The GT is being built at Canadian race engineering company Multimatic's Ontario plant, where the GTE racing cars that contest at Le Mans are also prepared.

Ford hasn't confirmed whether it will be finish its second customer before the close of 2016, but it said the first should be with its owner later this month. The Ontario plant will produce up to 250 models per year, with total production so far capped at 1000.

Only the first batch of 500 cars has been allocated. Applications for the remaining 500 will open in 2018.
