All of which means it still warrants the cliché we spoke about at the start. Massive boot, comfortable with it, stylish looks - there’s not a huge amount wrong with the big Mercedes.

The 5 Series Touring remains the dynamic choice, but for devouring big loads and massive miles, you can’t go far wrong with the three-pointed star.

This luxurious estate is an SUV for motorists of refined taste

Before you splash your cash on that luxury SUV, pause, I pray you, to consider the worth of a good old-fashioned estate car based on a premium luxury saloon.

Of these, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate is one of the longest-lived and most impressive. As with all the previous incarnations, this 2016-onwards pantechnicon blends a capacious and high-quality interior and a boot the size of Belgium with elegant styling and a comfortable ride. It’s great value when used, too.

There were initially three diesel options: two different versions of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine (the short-lived E200d and impressive E220d) and a V6 in the E350d.

Post-2018 cars added the diesel-electric plug-in hybrid E300de for terrific potential fuel economy and the punchy E400d straight-six diesel.

The petrols included the four-pot E200 and the very lively E43 and E63 models from AMG, which both had four-wheel drive and were powered by dynamite and spitting shrapnel. The E43 was later superseded by the mild-hybrid E53.

On a more positive note, there are several latest-generation 2021 E-Class models to choose from, including a four-pot oil-burner and a 450kW V8. Here’s what the South African E-Class model line-up looks like, with prices:

IS THE E-CLASS WORTH BUYING?

If you’re a fan of sedans, the latest E-Class has to be on your list of must-haves or must-drives. It is able to blend comfort, luxury and performance so well together that it really is one of the best cars Mercedes-Benz has ever produced. In fact, I’ve always been a fan of the BMW 5 Series but after spending time in the latest E-Class, I’m starting to understand the allure of the E.

There’s no denying that it’s a very expensive vehicle, but its competitors are equally hard on the pocket, and considering the high levels of standard features you get in the E, it’s well worth the asking price, in my opinion, particularly the entry-level E200 and the E53 models.

If this is the last time we attend an E-Class launch in South Africa, it’s a fitting end to the vehicle that has been on the road from the 1950s in one form or another. We also noted that this is probably the last time Mercedes-Benz will launch a V8 range-topping E-Class, so this is perhaps your last chance to own a piece of Mercedes history if you have the bucks and can afford the lairy E63 S 4Matic +.

All models come with a five-year/100 000km Mercedes-Benz maintenance plan.

Pricing for the E200 Sedan starts at R920 000, with the range-topping E63 S 4Matic+ retailing for R2 423 000. Prices include a 2-year/unlimited km warranty and 5-year/100 000 km maintenance plan.

Summary

The E-Class might not be Benz's most popular model in South Africa, but it remains a staple for Mercedes Benz in other (and major) markets. Although the SUV-fication of the South African luxury-vehicle segment (heck, most of the passenger-car market) is well advanced, loyal Mercedes owners will be glad to know the E-Class range has been updated, yet remains unchanged in the ways that matter.

Mercedes-Benz reveals new MBUX Superscreen for E-Class

Upgraded MBUX Hyperscreen to be made an option on the new executive car, covering its entire dashboard

The interior of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been unveiled, including the new MBUX Superscreen that will be available in the sixth-generation executive car.

This comes as part of a concerted effort to provide it with a significantly more contemporary cabin and digital-based user experience than its predecessor.

Set for a start to UK sales in saloon form in July, the new E-Class will follow its EQE electric sibling in offering buyers the choice of separate instrument and portrait-style infotainment displays or a dashboard covered almost entirely in pixels.

Modelled heavily on the MBUX Hyperscreen already offered by Mercedes-Benz as a high-cost option, the MBUX Superscreen combines a free-standing digital instrument display with central infotainment and optional passenger displays.

The latter two are housed beneath a single sheet of glass to give the E-Class's interior a clean and uncluttered look that's perpetuated by a reduction in the number of analogue controls.

Mercedes-Benz has revealed the interior of its next-gen E-Class, which will be offered with a new MBUX Superscreen complete with a built-in selfie camera and TikTok…

Mercedes-Benz is preparing to whip the wraps off its new W214-generation E-Class. But before we see the outside, the Stuttgart-based firm has given us our first official look at the cabin, which will be available with a new MBUX Superscreen featuring an integrated selfie camera and built-in apps such as TikTok and Angry Birds.

The German automaker promises the next-gen E-Class will provide its occupants with a “particularly immersive entertainment experience”. In addition, the company says the electronic architecture is “more software-driven and less hardware-driven” that previous iterations, which should allow for fuss-free updating of the various interior systems in the future.

Like the Hyperscreen arrangement in the likes of the S-Class and the EQS, the new E-Class dashboard is dominated by digital displays. If the optional front passenger screen is specified, the large glass surface of the MBUX Superscreen extends to the central display, too.

The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class is set to get a swanky new interior featuring a three-screen infotainment suite, selfie camera and library of Gen Z-friendly apps.

Following on from the announcement about its all-new spangly software architecture, MB.OS, the German car maker has revealed interior images of the new E-Class, arriving in Europe this summer and in the US in the autumn. The pics showcase the new MBUX Entertainment Plus package - a swish Cinemax version of a connected car cabin.

The whole (undoubtedly subscription-based) shebang focusses on superfast connectivity, supersized screens and a seriously wide choice of entertainment. The interior will now feel more like your lounge than ever before with the introduction of gaming, music, streaming content and conferencing software, from third-party apps like Apple Music, Tiktok, Angry Birds, Webex and Zoom. Occupants will also be able to watch local telly through the ZYNC portal.

Set to be as immersive as a night out at Secret Cinema, the ambient lighting suite vibes with ‘beat-synchronicity’ in time to any sound and feeling - physically, not emotionally speaking - emitted through a Dolby Atmos-treated Burmester audio suite and ‘exciters’ in the back rests. We can literally feel, see and hear the Jurassic Park water ripple as we type this. It ought to save you some cash down the Odeon, but a lot of that kit is optional.

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class will be revealed on 25 April, the firm has confirmed today.

Marketed as a segment leader for new technologies, the new E-Class will receive an upmarket interior in line with that of its electric sibling, the EQE. Officially detailed in February, this new interior is available with the dashboard-spanning MBUX Superscreen as an optional extra.

Effectively two screens – one mounted centrally and one on the offside – under one sheet of glass, the Superscreen includes functionality that allows passengers to watch films on the go. Meanwhile, a sensor monitors the driver’s attention and disables the passenger screen if the driver is distracted by it.

Another new development is an optional driver-facing camera that (when stationary) can be used on one of the various third-party apps downloadable to the MBUX operating system, including TikTok and Zoom.

The latest version of MBUX also includes artificial intelligence, which learns the driver’s routine and pre-empts their needs – for example, automatically warming the seat when the temperature drops, or winding down the window at the entrance to a frequented car park.
