2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class (5th Generation)

Mercedes-Benz to build E-Class (then SUVs) in Russia…

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that it will start producing passenger vehicles in Russia from 2019.

The Daimler-backed brand has started construction of a new “fully flexible” (essentially meaning that several architectures can be produced on one assembly line) passenger car plant in the Moscow region, which is scheduled to start building the E-Class sedan in 2019.

The Stuttgart-based automaker says production of three SUV models – the GLE, GLC and GLS – will follow thereafter.

In total, the brand says it is investing more than €250-million in the project, which will be managed by a newly founded company dubbed Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing RUS, headed by new site manager Axel Bense. The venture is expected to create more than 1 000 on-site jobs.

The new Moscovia plant will form part of the Esipovo industrial park and will cover all production steps, from body shop to paint shop and final assembly, on a land area of about 85 hectares.

Sindelfingen in Germany will remain the lead plant for the E-Class.

Mercedes-Benz vs. BMW: the luxury sales gap widens

Mercedes-Benz has pulled ahead of BMW in the global sales race on the back of increased demand for its E-Class.

After the first six months of 2017, Mercedes-Benz has pulled clear of BMW in the race for the global luxury sales crown.

On the back of a strong June, the Stuttgart-based automaker’s sales total for the year hit 1,14 million units, a whopping 14 percent more than during the same period in 2016, according to Automotive News.

BMW, meanwhile, has grown sales 5,2 percent to a little more than 1,03 million units, some 106 244 units behind its German foe. Audi registrations, meanwhile, fell nearly five percent to 908 950 units. Bear in mind that these figures cover the brands themselves, rather than the groups (thus, the BMW figure does not include Mini, Rolls-Royce or Motorrad sales, while the Mercedes number does not include Smart units).

“Mercedes has the better momentum as they have a relatively new palette of models,” NordLB analyst Frank Schwope told Automotive News.

“It will definitely be a tight race again in coming years and even Audi isn’t a lost cause, but this year Mercedes will stay on top,” he predicted.

The report suggested that Mercedes had been able to put more distance between itself and its Munich-based rival thanks to increased demand for the new E-Class as well as a growing appetite for its SUV range.

2017 Mercedes-Benz E220 All-Terrain Review - Motoring Australia

Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain 4x4² revealed as engineer-created one-off

Design engineer Jürgen Eberle created the high-riding E-Class estate to scratch a hardcore off-roading itch

Mercedes has revealed its latest hardcore off-roader, the E-Class All-Terrain 4x4² - a one-off creation built by a design engineer and off-roading enthusiast and a team of engineers.

Inspired by the equally extreme G500 4x4², design engineer Jürgen Eberle says the aim of the project was to find out if a similar car could be created with the G500 4x4²’s portal axles grafted on in place of the standard E-Class All-Terrain's multi-link set-up.

The project took a few months to create, with Eberle heading up a growing team as his project became more and more ambitious. What Eberle ended up with was an E-Class All-Terrain with more than double the original car’s ground clearance: 420mm, compared with the standard car’s 160mm, with a wading depth just 100mm shy of the G-Class’s 600mm. The standard All-Terrain’s wading depth is 280mm.

Arguably the focal point of the car, though, is its 20in wheels, which come from the R-Class and are shod in knobbly 285/50 R20 off-roading tyres, compared with the 19in and 245/45 R19 standard wheels and tyres. To house these, special wheel arch extenders had to be 3D printed and attached to the car, increasing its width by almost 200mm.

The standard rubber and plastic suspension bushings were replaced with Uniball motorsport bearings, while Eberle drafted in help from a friend working at AMG to modify the driveshaft geometry for compatibility with the car’s off-roading modifications.

“The crucial factor was the network," said Eberle. "In every area where I needed support, I found colleagues who were on the same wavelength and who provided help quickly and without any red tape.”

Under the bonnet is the standard 191bhp four-cylinder diesel engine, and 9G-tronic nine-speed automatic gearbox. Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel drive system is of course, maintained for the model.

The E-Class All-Terrain 4x4² attracted the attention and praise of the E-Class’s chief engineer, Michael Kelz, who said: “The idea excited me right from the start and initial test drives of the All-Terrain 4x4 2 at the new testing and technology centre in Immendingen are demonstrating promising off-road characteristics. Thanks to the suspension lift with portal axles, the All-Terrain 4x4 2 is able to cope with even the nastiest rocky and stony runs – it’s a really skillful scrambler.”

Mercedes-Benz E-Class 4x4² All-Terrain Might Actually Happen

Your eyes do not deceive you, this is not photoshop wizardry. What you see here is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class 4x4² All-Terrain and the Stuttgart-based firm is considering it for production, albeit in limited numbers.

Last year, Mercedes-Benz revealed the E-Class All-Terrain, an E-Class wagon with plastic body cladding, skid plates, all-wheel drive and a 156 mm raised ride height that would rival the likes of the Volvo V90 Cross Country and Audi A6 Allroad.

Then, a Mercedes-Benz engineer by the name of Jürgen Eberle spearheaded a project to create a hardcore E-Class 4x4² All-Terrain version by turning to the Mercedes-AMG G63 6x6 and G500 4x4² for inspiration. Eberle and his team proceeded to raise the ground clearance to nearly 200 mm but then took it a step further by installing the portal axles from the G500 4x4² which resulted in a formidable ground clearance of 420 mm, more than double than that of the original All-Terrain and some 50 mm more than the G-Wagon itself.

Who said a station wagon can't be hardcore? The E-Class 4x4² All-Terrain is as hardcore as they come.

With a wading depth of 500 mm and riding on 20-inch wheels shod with fat 285/50 R20 tyres, Eberle created a luxurious offroad beast. The project took 6 months to complete.

The E-Class 4x4² All-Terrain borrows the 3.5-litre V6 engine from the E400 with outputs of 245 kW and 480 Nm of torque.

Eberle is reportedly confident that the E-Class 4x4² All-Terrain will get the green light for production and if does, it will serve as a more affordable option to the Big 3 G-Wagons, the G63 6x6, G500 4x4² and the G650 Landaulet. Production numbers will be limited, however.

Mercedes-Benz suspends sale of E350d in Germany

In order to improve emissions, Mercedes-Benz has decided to pull the E350d from sale in Germany for re-engineering

Mercedes-Benz has suspended sales of the E350d in Germany following a decision to re-engineer the turbocharged 3.0-litre V6-powered diesel model’s exhaust gas after-treatment system as part of a recertification process.

The E350d went on sale in May in both saloon and estate guises following the re-engineering of the previous model’s exhaust gas after-treatment system. Mercedes now claims to have identified further changes for its so-called OM642 LS engine that will allow it to claim lower NOx emissions for the popular diesel model.

Among the changes to be made to the E350d is the fitting of a larger SCR catalyst. “With corresponding changes to the injection process, this will allow the system to run more efficiently,” a Mercedes official with knowledge of the E350d’s pending recertification told Autocar.

The adoption of a larger SCR catalyst provides a larger surface area for the atomisation of the AdBlue solution, in turn increasing its ability to neutralise NOx emissions.

Mercedes denies it has been forced to fit a larger AdBlue tank to the diesel E350d as part of the changes, as the recertified system is claimed to use the same amount of AdBlue solution in each injection, thus ensuring it will not be emptied between servicing intervals.

“It is the larger surface area of the new catalyst that is key to the efficiency gains,” says Autocar’s source.

The E350d uses a 24.5-litre AdBlue tank, while larger models, including the GLE 350d and GLS 350d, have a 38.5-litre tank.

Mercedes will not confirm when the E350d will go on sale again, but says the recertification should take “a few weeks”.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain 2017 UK review

Should I buy one?

Not everyone who needs to tow, get along a gravel track or extricate their car from a muddy field necessarily wants a traditional 4x4. Estate cars are a great alternative, in many instances providing more usable interior space than an SUV, and with the ease of manoeuvring of a normal car.

The lower loading bay makes it ideal for dogs to hop in and out of and the decent towing capacity makes it extremely versatile as a load-lugger. For that job, there are cheaper options that will be as capable, but for those who want the luxury sophistication a Mercedes offers, the E-Class All-Terrain ticks all the boxes.

3 Reasons Why Mercedes-Benz E350d is #CarsAwards Finalist

What makes the Mercedes-Benz 350d Avantgarde a worthy contender in the Executive Sedan category of the 2017/18 Cars.co.za Consumer Awards – powered by WesBank? We investigate…

Mercedes-Benz’s new E-Class is purported to be the most accomplished executive sedan on the market. This E350d offers impressive onboard technology and exhibits high levels of comfort, luxury, refinement and effortless performance capability. Can the Mercedes-Benz E350d Avantgarde trump its rivals to take the win in the Executive Sedan category?

3 Reasons Why Mercedes-Benz 350d Avantgarde is a #CarsAwards Finalist

1. Refined performance

With 190 kW and 620 Nm of torque on tap from its 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine, the E350d is not short on power and it delivers brisk, unflustered on-road performance. The E350d pulls strongly when overtaking manoeuvres are required and its performance is further enhanced by the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission, which shifts in a smooth, unobtrusive manner. The steering wheel-mounted shift paddles allow the driver to exploit performance even further with manual inputs.

As an executive sedan, the E-Class seems best geared for comfortable cruising and it doesn’t feel as fast as it is, which is largely due to its refinement... You simply don’t feel the speed. The E350d has a claimed consumption figure of 5.5 L/100 km.

2. Tech powerhouse

The E-Class is a powerhouse in terms of technological features and Mercedes-Benz has extensively upgraded the interior capabilities of the E-Class to adapt to the modern business person’s everyday life. The centre screen, for instance, has the best resolution and crispest display of any car we've experienced. It isn’t a touchscreen, however, the Stuttgart-based manufacturer has persisted with the COMAND interface's rotary knobs that are located in the driver armrest area.

Buyers can also opt for the widescreen cockpit display, which transforms the instrument cluster into a fully digital affair. It’s the most impressive option you can choose if you want to spruce up the cabin and make it look futuristic. It also features impressive driver assistance systems that make driving less stressful, especially in heavy traffic situations. The E-Class' technology offering is excellent, making it a strong contender in this category.

3. Comfort deluxe

If it’s a quiet ride that you’re after then the E-Class is the car for you. The cabin is extremely well insulated and the wind noise intrusion is minimal, even at freeway speeds. Of course, the E-Class offers adaptable modes for comfort- or sports-oriented driving and is capable of delivering sure-footed handling on a challenging stretch of blacktop. But it never sacrifices comfort and refinement. The E-Class has a smooth, soft ride quality and feels more grown-up than some of its more overtly sporty rivals, much like you’d expect a buyer in this segment to be.

Mercedes-Benz updates E-Class sedan, adds E53 variant

Mercedes-Benz has make a few subtle changes to its E-Class range, “narrowing the gap to the S-Class” with new driving assistance systems, and expanding the sedan and estate line-ups with Mercedes-AMG E53 derivatives.

The updates to the range include the addition of a new steering wheel, fresh packages as well as minor interior and exterior design revisions.

The Stuttgart-based brand says that with the driving assistance package fitted, features such as route-based driver support will now be included. The adaptive cruise control and active steering have also been revised to be more “comfortable” to use, while the speed now adjusts automatically ahead of corners, intersections and traffic circles.

The cabin adopts an updated steering wheel from the S-Class, which means that the cruise control system no longer employs its own stork on the column but is instead managed by a selection of buttons on the wheel itself.

The infotainment system is now able to handle two phones being paired at once, even allowing an incoming call from each device at the same time (outgoing calls, though, must be performed one at a time). A third device, such as a tablet, can also be connected.

New options for the E-Class range include the “Sports Style Package”, which adds a chrome louvre below the front bumper, a badge on the front wing, a chrome trim element in the rear bumper finished in high-gloss black and tailpipe embellishers. The cabin, meanwhile, gains a set of special floor mats. A selection of new interior materials, exterior body colours and wheels has also been added to the catalogue.

Furthermore, the E53 4Matic+ has been added to the sedan and estate ranges (it was initially available only in coupé and cabriolet body styles), replacing the E43 models and featuring a new twin-turbocharged 3,0-litre straight-six with an auxiliary compressor.

This powertrain produces 320 kW and 520 N.m of torque, but with the EQ Boost generator, this figure temporarily increases by 16 kW and 250 N.m of torque. The E400d 4Matic also gains a bump in power from 245 kW to 250 kW.

These updates for the E-Class have not yet been confirmed for South Africa.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class E300de 2019 UK review

Should I buy one?

Whether or not you should consider the E300de depends on your situation. Those after an executive car solely to beat London’s Congestion Charge and Ultra Low Emission Zone fee might be better served with the more refined and fractionally cheaper E300e or, better yet, the BMW 530e.

But there’s plenty to like about E300de’s set-up, particularly for those who combine shorter commutes with motorway jaunts on a more regular basis. It’s one of the only PHEVs on sale that manages to still be efficient once its battery is depleted, which should be a real draw for higher-mileage private and fleet buyers alike.

There are downsides, of course. Refinement and dynamic ability suffer to a degree, although not to the point where the car becomes difficult to recommend. It’s not cheap, either, but then it’s very much on a par with PHEVs of similar size, prestige and performance in that regard.

Pretty much nothing else short of a pricier, less versatile electric car is capable of combining performance, long-legged ability and fuel efficiency in such a convincing package.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class E300e 2019 UK review

Should I buy one?

The question you find yourself asking about such cars is how often owners bother to plug them in to charge when it’s not a necessity. The answer probably comes down to why they bought it in the first place and for what purpose. If it’s to pound the motorways day to day, 30 miles of electric-only range is pretty irrelevant. But if your E-Class will be running errands around town and doing the school run, the EV transformation absolutely makes sense.

Notably, despite its obvious size, the E300e is easy to manoeuvre and park – and just as significantly it’s ULEZ-friendly: no emissions charge to you if you own one in central London, then.

Strange to think such a grand, executive cruiser should be judged as the perfect family-friendly city car. Compromise has its benefits after all.

Mercedes-Benz previews E-Class facelift

Mercedes-Benz has offered the world's media a foretaste of its facelifted E-Class executive sedan, which is expected to debut at the upcoming Geneva Show. The upgrade to its electrical system is said to be “more advanced than the S-Class in certain areas.”

Because vehicle manufacturers have to compete against one another for notable press exposure during international motor shows, many marques have chosen to avoid the traditional media melee and opted to “leak” official details days or weeks before the event (heck, some have even released complete press kits). So, in the lead-up to its product’s full unveiling in Geneva, Mercedes-Benz has showcased thinly-disguised examples of its revamped E-Class to the media in Nevada, USA.

Mercedes previews ‘major facelift’ for E-Class sedan

Mercedes-Benz has released the first details of its facelifted E-Class sedan and though we’ll still have to wait a while to see it fully revealed, the disguised prototypes that you see here give us a fairly good idea of where the German carmaker is heading with it.

Few would deny that the current, tenth-generation E-Class is a good looking vehicle, but many have criticised it for looking too similar to the C-Class. Thankfully the new E will have a more distinct personality, with a larger grille and more angular headlights upfront and a completely fresh look at the back, where horizontal taillights are set to replace the current vertical units. Mercedes-Benz classifies this as an “extensive facelift” and its designers promise a “pure, yet emotional” design.
