2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class (5th Generation)

Holy smokes....check those figures....crazy tuned outgoing E63

"German tuner Posaidon has worked its magic on the outgoing Mercedes-AMG E63, transforming the sedan into a 750 kW monster.

The tuner says the Posaidon E63 RS850+ is the “most powerful street-legal Mercedes of all time”, thanks to claimed outputs of 750 kW and 1400 N.m.

The obligatory sprint from standstill to 100 km/h takes a mind-boggling 2,8 seconds, while the beastly E’s “theoretical” top speed of is electronically limited to 350 km/h (due to the load parameters of the tyres).

All major engine components of the 5,5-litre biturbo V8 were upgraded or re-engineered, according to Posaidon, with the job starting with the addition of a pair of larger turbochargers and more efficient intercoolers.

A bespoke carbon-fibre intake system, incorporating a large free-flow conical air filter, was also added, along with colder competition spark plugs. A handmade turbo-back exhaust system leads to a valve control rear silencer, while the ECU was custom-mapped to make full use of the new hardware.

The transmission, of course, also came in for some work, being extensively uprated to deal with the 1 400 N.m peak torque output. Posaidon furthermore fitted specially calibrated limited slip differentials to the front and rear axles of this all-wheel drive monster.

In a bid to save weight, the German tuner also binned the rear seats and rear door trims, before replacing the front seats with lightweight perches from the C63 Black Series model. The standard bonnet, front bumper, rear diffuser and spoiler, mirror caps and tailpipe trims were then replaced with lightweight carbon-fibre versions.

The standard grille was replaced by a wire mesh version and 20-inch ADV.1 alloy wheels fill the Posaidon E63 RS850+’s arches. The suspension was uprated with fully adjustable coil-overs, while a high-performance carbon-ceramic braking system takes care of the all-important stopping power."

Mercedes-Benz E-Class All Terrain spotted before Paris

Our spy photographers have spotted the upcoming Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate All Terrain ahead of its arrival at the Paris motor show this autumn.

A contender for the Audi A6 Allroad, the E-Class All Terrain model will go on sale in 2017.

As shown by these spy pictures, the estate will feature variable-height air suspension – a development of Mercedes’ Air Body Control system - that will allow it to be raised for mild off-roading, and to be lowered at higher speeds.

It will have revised exterior design touches that include more rugged bumpers, plastic underbody protection and additional cladding for the wheel arches.

The entry-level E 200 model is expected to have a price of around £40,000. It's thought it will have the same range of turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines as the new E-Class saloon and estate do.

Michael Kelz, the E-Class's chief engineer, has previously said: “It won’t be as good as an SUV off road, but it will be able to go farther than most owners will expect.”

Apparently, the soft-roader segment is particularly important in Europe, where buyers in some countries still want extra utility without the visual aggression of a full-size SUV or crossover. Kelz revealed that there are no plans to sell the E-Class Estate All Terrain in the US.

As Mercedes already has six off-roaders on its roster, the All Terrain seems like an intelligent alternative - and another niche covered.

We first broke the news of the new E-Class all-wheel-drive estate back in February.

Also...if you don't opt in for the digital instrumentation this is how the analogue setup looks:

"The E-Class can also be optionally fitted with an impressive Widescreen Cockpit (R14 500) that combines two 12.3-inch screens that simultaneously serve as a digital instrument cluster (positioned directly ahead of the driver) and as a central infotainment screen. Sadly, our test unit featured the standard instrument cluster with round dials and the 7-inch display. It’s not unattractive, by any means, but the Cars.co.za team feels the Widescreen Cockpit is well worth the extra spend."

2017 Mercedes-AMG E 63 estate spotted with ultra-wide arches

Video footage of a Mercedes-AMG E 63 estate test mule wearing ultra-wide arches (video below) has surfaced online, leading some online reports to claim it is an E 63 Black Series.

The regular E 63 estate isn't due to be revealed until the next Geneva motor show in March 2017, following the E 63 saloon, which is due later this year. But this mule suggests Mercedes is already hard at work developing an even more potent version.

However, an insider has said this car is unlikely to be a Black Series model, despite the claims. Our source said AMG's hottest moniker was unlikely to feature next on an estate. Instead, this mule could be something else to sit above the regular AMG models, or even just an E 63 S.

Although the true identity of the wide-arched test car is still unconfirmed, mules for the regular E 63 estate (below) have been caught on camera on multiple occasions, revealing its large brakes and alloy wheels, quad exhausts and an aggressive front end.

The regular model was last spotted near Mercedes' test centre near the Nürburgring, which reveals the possible nature of the tests being undertaken.

The E 63 will share its engine with the Mercedes-AMG GT. It's a 4.0-litre V8 that is expected to be tuned to 600bhp – a rise of 51bhp over the current E 63, and 23bhp over the E 63 S. That power figure, combined with Mercedes' reported 100kg of weight savings in the new E-Class, signposts a notable improvement over the E 63's 0-62mph time of 4.2sec.

In the Mercedes-AMG range, the E 63 now sits above the newly introduced, Audi S6-rivalling E 43, which produces 395bhp and is reported to start at more than £50,000 by officials, although an official price is yet to be confirmed. Despite its previous absence from the E-Class line-up, the E 43 isn't expected to affect sales of the E 63, with different groups of customers targeted for each car.

The current E 63 estate starts from £76,515, but the expected rise in pricing of the E 63's hottest rival, the BMW M5, means this figure could rise for the new Merc. The E 63 estate is expected to reach the UK in the summer of 2017 after its Geneva show debut.

New E-Class gets more engine options

The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class made its local debut two months ago with a fairly limited engine range that included just one petrol engine option (E200) and two diesels (E220d and E350d). But now the range is being expanded with two higher-end petrol options in the form of the E250 and E400 4Matic.
The new E250 features a more powerful 155kW/350Nm version of the 2-litre turbopetrol engine that's fitted to the E200, in which case it produces 135kW and 300Nm. That's good enough for a 6.9 second 0-100km/h sprint, according to Mercedes-Benz, versus 7.7 seconds in the E200's case.

From there it's a big leap in price and power to the E400 4Matic, which will serve as the performance flagship until the AMG versions arrive. The E400 is powered by a 3-litre V6 turbo, rated at 245kW and 480Nm and good for a 5.3-second 0-100 sprint.

As with all E-Class sedans, the engine is paired with a new 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic gearbox but while its range siblings are rear-wheel driven, the E400 becomes the first local E-Class to sport 4Matic permanent all-wheel drive.

All E-Class sedans are sold with steel suspension as standard, but buyers can opt for Merc's Air Body Control multi-chamber air suspension system.

As far as driver assistance gadgets go, the E comes standard with Active Brake Assist, with auto-braking and pedestrian detection, as well as Attention Assist and Crosswind Assist. Other standard features across the range include Pre-Safe, dual-zone climate control, Audio 20 infotainment system with reverse camera and a six-year / 100 000km maintenance plan.

The executive sedan is also available with a long list of optional gizmos, the highlight here being Drive Pilot, something of a semi-autonomous 'autopilot' system.

From unpaved tracks to steep, serpentine snow-bound roads, the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain can tackle routes where conventional estates have to give up, thanks to greater ground clearance and 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Rugged styling and flared wheel arches also give it a tough look. The E-Class All-Terrain makes its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show 2016.

"No E-Class has ever been as versatile as the All-Terrain. The new model combines a striking look in SUV style with the intelligent space concept of the estate. This is coupled with lots of innovative safety features and the multi-award-winning E-Class interior," said Ola Källenius, Member of the Daimler management board responsible for Sales and Marketing of Mercedes Benz Cars. "With 4MATIC all-wheel drive as a standard feature and increased ground clearance thanks to the AIR BODY CONTROL multi-chamber air suspension, the All-Terrain is a flexible all-rounder - for unpaved roads, family and leisure time."

Thanks to off-road styling elements the All-Terrain has a powerful and robust appearance which also distinguishes it from the classic estate. Dynamism and modern luxury unite to make the All-Terrain an ambassador for the Mercedes-Benz design philosophy of the sensuous clarity that defines modern luxury.

An eye-catching feature of the front is the SUV-style two-fin grille with the star integrated in the centre. The distinctive front bumper and lower panelling, electroplated in silver-chrome, also contribute to the robust appearance. The top part of the three-part front bumper is painted in the body colour and the lower part comes in grained black plastic.

At the side, the black wheel arch covers are a distinctive feature that emphasise the car's all-terrain character. This also applies to the black side skirt that features a chrome trip strip. Three exclusive alloy wheel sets in 19- and 20-inch formats with higher sidewalls give the vehicle a confident look, greater ground clearance and enhanced comfort on rough roads.

The All-Terrain also features a model-specific three-part bumper at the rear with the top part painted in body colour and the lower part in grained black plastic. Further features typical of an SUV include robust load sill protection and an underbody guard electroplated in silver-chrome.

The interior includes aluminium-carbon look trim that is exclusive to the All-Terrain, stainless steel sports pedals and floor mats with All-Terrain lettering. The equipment is based on the AVANTGARDE interior line, while EXCLUSIVE and designo appointments are optionally available. The new model boasts all the load compartment flexibility of the E-Class estate, such as the rear seat cargo position and a standard 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat back. All E-Class innovations relating to safety, comfort and convenience are available.

The All-Terrain will be launched as an E 220 d 4MATIC (143 kW/194 hp) with the newly developed four-cylinder diesel engine. A short time later a variant with a six-cylinder diesel engine will follow. Both models come with the new 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission as standard.

The All-Terrain has DYNAMIC SELECT as standard. This enables five driving programmes to be selected with different engine, transmission, ESP and steering characteristics. A special model-specific feature is the All-Terrain driving programme, which offers settings for off-road driving and was derived from the GLE. The even more comfortable suspension configuration and the large wheels with higher sidewalls noticeably further increase ride comfort on rough roads compared with the E-Class.

Selecting the All-Terrain driving programme with the driving programme switch raises the chassis via the standard AIR BODY CONTROL by +20 mm up to a speed of 35 km/h. The thresholds for ESP, active yaw control and acceleration skid control (ASR) are adjusted accordingly. The All-Terrain driving programme has a special indicator in the vehicle display. Information displayed there includes the steering angle, the vehicle level (position of the air suspension), the angle of slope and the angle of inclination, the accelerator/brake position and a compass.

Thanks to air suspension three levels from 0 to +35 mm are selectable. Independent of the driving programme the highest level can also be selected manually with the level button on the centre console. The E-Class All-Terrain is 29 millimetres higher than the E-Class Estate - 14 mm of which is due to the tyres' larger height/width ratio and 15 mm to the normal driving level of the air suspension. The ground clearance is 121 to 156 mm.j
