That could well happen. The future of the Commodore is uncertain but GM Down Under said it has contingency plans - so most likely a re-badged Malibu then.
 
They will, until they do a comparative test between the Astra K and 1300 Beetle. The the Astra will loose.
 
K as in the 9th generation (counting from A to K, skipping I) - so think of this as 2 generations ahead of the current Golf.

The reason why they are not going bigger than 1.6 is because the engine bay will not take larger engines. The car uses a smaller platform and larger cabin.

They will bring out a .... get ready for this .... new GSi ! This will be before the OPC and will use a new twin-turbo 1.6-liter CDTI engine. Let's hope that with it being a diesel they don't screw around with the emissions tests :cool:

Personally I think they will bring out a very nippy 1.6 for the OPC - remember that the Astra OPC is also more powerful than the Golf GTI.

Perhaps, but if you replace the VW badge with an Audi one, the GTI badge with an S one, and slap on some kiff wheels bru, then you have yourself an incredibly rare car...
 
Seems that GM is serious a bout taking the new Astra K upmarket, indications are that it will be sold in the US badged as a Buick. The only Opel currently sold in the US as a Buick is the Mokka crossover.

Last Astra that was sold in the US was the Astra H 1.8 automatic which traded under the now defunct Saturn name. It received favourable reviews, I own one and can vouch for it. However Saturn was not a premium brand whereas Buick is.

So SA will be stuck with the old plan for Europe, Chev as mainstream and Opel as upmarket.

I wonder what the EU plan will be when Chev Europe pulls out.
 
According to those that got their hands on the new Astra it is sufficiently quick even in with the 1 litre 3 cylinder turbo engine. The new 1.4 turbo through a 6 speed manual transmission can get it from 0 to 100 in 8.5 and top out at 216 km/h. Price wise it is a bit on the expensive side and there are some compelling arguments in favour of the equivalent Golf.
