2017 Jeep Compass (2nd Generation)

Jeep to launch four new models for Europe in 2018

FCA boss Sergio Marchionne said that, despite a refreshed line-up, Jeep's 2017 European sales were "lousy"

Jeep will launch four new models in Europe in 2018 as it looks to improve on its “lousy” performance last year.

That’s how Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) boss Sergio Marchionne described Jeep’s European sales, which grew just 2% to 107,569 cars in 2017 despite a recently refreshed line-up, spearheaded by the new Compass.

Now, the roll-out of the new Compass is soon to be complete, and it will be imminently joined by a revised version of the Cherokee and a Renegade this summer, ahead of the launch of the all-new Wrangler in Europe later this year as Jeep looks for Europe to help push it towards two million sales in the medium-term, up from just under 1.4m in 2017.

Jeff Hines, Jeeps’ new European boss, described last year’s sales in Europe as “disappointing”, which he put down to delays in getting the new Compass to market in one of the continent’s biggest segments. “For 2018 vs 2017, I expect a lot better,” he said, saying this year would be “the year of Jeep” in Europe.

He also believed that Jeep could “find space” to succeed in the UK, despite the presence of Land Rover. The role of dealers will be key to this, said Hines, who said Jeep had to find a way “to help communicate all these things in an easy to understand way”. He added: “That’s the biggest challenge for us,” in telling the firm’s potential customers about the brand’s new cars.

“What some customers may not realise is how the great dynamics and interior can make a Jeep a great daily driver that can fit all your needs,” said Hines, in reference to the fact the cars were often still viewed as utilitarian 4x4s.

The revised Renegade would be revealed on June 1 at the wider FCA presentation into the future of its brands, where Jeep’s targets and future model strategy will be outlined for its investors.

Jeep’s growth plans could also be harmed by a falling demand for diesel in Europe, but Hines believed the fuel still has a role in Europe and the firm was also now planning for hybrids, plans for which would be confirmed on June 1.

Jeep Compass 2.0 Multijet-2 4WD Limited 2018 UK review

Should I buy one?

The Compass is a tough-looking 4x4 with enough brawn to back its image. Plus, in Limited form, you’ll not be wanting for more equipment. But it’s also several rungs below the best soft-roaders when it comes to on-Tarmac running, leaving it hard to recommend when most buyers of this class rarely venture further off road than cut grass.

The Seat Ateca is better to drive and cheaper to buy, while its group stablemate, the Skoda Karoq, offers even better value for money. There’s no doubt that the Compass is an instantly likeable proposition but, to live with, it can’t provide the soft-roader experience most buyers of this segment will be after.

Those wanting a compact model with genuine SUV character, however, may find the Compass’s toughness more attractive. That said, even for those buyers set on one, they’re likely to be at least tempted to look further down the Compass range at models with the same off-road ability but fewer costly options.

Watch the Jeep Compass absolutely ace the ‘Moose Test’

The folks over at Spanish publication km77 have put the Jeep Compass through the dreaded Moose Test … and the SUV passed with flying colours.

In the video below, a Jeep Compass Limited 2,0 MultiJet 4×4 auto is subjected to one of the toughest handling tests out there, which is designed to simulate an animal suddenly running in front of a moving vehicle.

As we’ve pointed out before, though, whereas the Swedes usually perform the evaluation at about 60 km/h, this test from the Spaniards is conducted at higher speeds.

The Compass (in this instance running on 18-inch alloys wrapped in 225/55 R18 Continental ContiCrossContact rubber) was put through the test first at a lofty 79 km/h and then at 81 km/h, speeds that km77 describes as “very high” (particularly for an SUV). The publication reported that the Jeep exhibited “precise reactions”, adding that it was “very safe and easy to control”.

Despite being unveiled as long ago as September 2016, the Compass has yet to launch in South Africa, with Jeep SA’s website still listing the model as “coming soon”.

Watch the clip below, which includes a slalom test, to see just how the Compass performed (take note that the commentary is in Spanish)…

New Jeep Compass Trailhawk: how much you’ll pay in SA

Despite being revealed as long ago as 2016, the new, second-generation Jeep Compass has finally touched down in South Africa.

So, how much will it cost you? Well, according to Jeep South Africa’s website, the five-seater Compass Trailhawk is the only model offered at launch, priced from R599 990.

The Trailhawk offers five off-road driving modes, front and rear skidplates and off-road-specific bumpers (fore and aft). As standard, this derivative runs on 17-inch alloys (wrapped in 225/60 R17 rubber).

The Compass Trailhawk employs a naturally aspirated 2,4-litre four-cylinder “Tigershark” petrol engine sending 129 kW (at 6 400 r/min) and 229 N.m (at 3 900 r/min) to all four corners via a nine-speed automatic transmission. Top speed is 185 km/h while combined fuel consumption is a claimed 9,5 L/100 km.

The SUV measures 4 398 mm long, 1 819 mm wide and 1 657 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2 636 mm. Jeep says the luggage compartment will swallow 438 litres while the fuel tank will hold 60 litres of petrol.

Listed standard features include a leather-trimmed steering wheel, a dual-pane sunroof, a Uconnect infotainment system (complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), a reversing camera, parking assistance, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, dual-zone air-conditioning, partial leather seats (with four-way power adjustment for the driver) and rain-sensing wipers.

Jeep Compass (2019) Specs and Price

The Jeep Compass has gone on sale! Take a look at specification and pricing for the new Compass below...

The Jeep Compass is not the smallest Jeep in the family anymore as the Renegade currently occupies that slot. The latest iteration of Compass has taken some time to get to South Africa and thanks to a dealership bulletin which was sent to us, we can confirm which model we're getting and how much it'll cost.

Yes, you read right. Sadly, South Africa will be getting just the single derivative; the Compass Trailhawk, the 4x4-focused top of the range model. Powered by the naturally-aspirated 2.4-litre 4-cylinder engine with 130 kW and 229 Nm, the Jeep Compass also features a 9-speed automatic transmission. It's not going to be the fastest Jeep around, with the Compass hitting 100 kph in just under 10 seconds.

Being the flagship offering, you do get a commendable amount of standard features such as an automated tailgate, keyless entry and start button functionality. There's also a new infotainment screen which is 8.4-inches in size and it features navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There are 7 airbags and the vehicle received 5 stars in the Euro NCAP test. There's also a 438-litre boot.

The Trailhawk nomenclature means that this is the 4x4-focused derivative in the Compass family. To enable traversing rough terrain, the Compass features many offroad modes such as Snow, Rock, Sand and Mud. You can also leave the car in Auto mode and it'll do the dirty work automatically. There's also Hill Descent Control and Standard Jeep Active Drive Low 4x4 20:1 crawl ratio. The Compass Trailhawk features 30-degree approach angle, 24-degree breakover angle and a 34-degree departure angle, as well as a ground clearance of 225 mm. It can also wade through 405 mm of water.

Jeep Compass Trailhawk 2019 review

Should I buy one?

As the last word in off-roaders in the Compass range, the Trailhawk has some additional kudos with the hardware to back it up. Getting it stuck is perfectly possible but there will be few other cars that could keep going in the same conditions. The biggest problem with the Trailhawk is the similar ability of the standard car. At a premium of £7950 compared with the well-specced Limited model, the Trailhawk is just shy of £37,000, putting it head-on with some highly capable machinery too.

The regular Compass is better on road for more of the time, and should you be a regular green-laner it will follow in the Trailhawk’s tyre tracks in the majority of conditions – even more so if you spend that saved £8000 on some off-road rubber. Hardcore Jeep fanatics will probably want the iconic if somewhat rudimentary Wrangler, while for mostly on-road use with the occasional adventure the regular Compass will fit the bill. Highly impressive off road it might be, the Trailhawk answers a question that few people will likely ask.

I have not seen one on the road in Joburg. In fact I didnt know it was for sale, I guess it is typical for the FCA marketing department:unsure:

I have this advertised on Autotrader like 3 months ago. Not sure why they only officially launching it so late.

Nonexistent FCA SA advertising lol

That's why almost nobody knows this car has been out here for months already.

Irony is previous model shifted some decent volume in the late noughties side.

For R600k, I dont think I would want a petrol N/A car.
Can you pick up a nice 2nd hand Grand Cherokee for that money?
