2017 Suzuki Ignis

New Suzuki Ignis hits SA! Here’s how much it costs…

If there’s one thing Suzuki really knows how to do well, it’s make functional, likeable small cars. And now the local range has been bolstered with a new addition in the form of the diminutive Suzuki Ignis, which slots into the brand’s SUV line-up below the Vitara.

The five-door Ignis measures 3 700 mm long (a smidgen longer than the Volkswagen Cross Up!), with a wheelbase of 2 435 mm and ground clearance of 180 mm.

The local range comprises three (front-wheel drive) derivatives at launch, all powered by the Japanese automaker’s naturally aspirated 1,2-litre, four-cylinder petrol mill, worth 61 kW and 113 N.m in this application.

The GL derivative employs a five-speed manual (R169 900), while the better-equipped GLX is available with the same gearbox (R189 900) or a five-speed automatic (R204 900). Suzuki Auto SA claims a combined fuel consumption of just 4,9 L/100 km for the manual.

All models are covered by Suzuki Auto SA’s three-year or 100 000 km warranty and two-year or 30 000 km service plan.

Pricing:

Suzuki Ignis 1,2 GL: R169 900
Suzuki Ignis 1,2 GLX: R189 900
Suzuki Ignis 1,2 GLX (auto): R204 900

There are conflicting comments about the automatic transmission.
Two types are on offer - cvt and amt - the former has few fans while some mojos love the latter or others give it a big fail.
Locally the Ignis will have the amt and not the cvt.

It appears that the amt are very expensive service items.

Suzuki launches new Ignis crossover in SA: We have prices and details

• New Suzuki crossover
• 'Cheeky design' says Suzuki
• 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine
• Choice of five-speed manual or auto 'boxes

Expect to be surprised and delighted, says Suzuki, when its highly-anticipated Ignis crossover arrives in South African roads later in May 2017. The crossover will go on sale locally from June 1.

Wheels24's Janine Van der Post is attending the launch of the Ignis in the Western Cape.

First shown at the 2015 Paris Motor Show, the Ignis has since become a popular addition to the Suzuki small car family in Europe and a runner-up in the World Car of the Year for best Urban Car.

New crossover

It's offered in GL and range-topping GLX versions. Both are powered by the same 1.2-litre engine. Prices start from R169 900 for the GL and R204 900 for the GLX auto.

It offers 260 litres of cargo space, expandable to 469 litres with the rear seat folded.

Standard kit includes power windows, remote central locking, aircon, power steering, and an MP3-compatible CD sound-system with USB port and 12V accessory power socket.

In terms of safety it's fitted with dual front airbags, ABS anti-lock brakes, side-impact protection beams, Isofix child seat anchors and child-proof rear-door locks.

Under the bonnet

It's powered by the automaker's K12M 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine used in the Swift 1.2.

The normally aspirated, 1197cc motor benefits from the crossover’s low kerb mass (only 850kg) to produce 61kW/113Nm.

The engine can be mated to a five-speed manual or Suzuki’s Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), driving the front wheels.

The manual version accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 11,6 sec, while top speed is 165 km/h. Fitted with an auto, the Ignis reaches 100km/h in 13,0 sec, while top speed is 155 km/h.

The fuel-consumption is 5.1 litres/100km for the manual 4.9 litres/100km for the auto.

What's it like to drive?

Van der Post says: "We're driving the 1.2 higher-spec GLX models today (May 25) on launch in the Western Cape. The Ignis' 1.2 engine, mated to the 5-speed manual is a great match and is incredibly gutsy for its capacity. Its 61kW/113Nm of torque is more than suffice and instills enough confidence to want (and be able to) overtake.

"Driving along DuToitsKloof pass outside Paarl, towards Rawsonville, this little compact SUV is fun. I could push it through the pass at surprising pace.

"It's absolutely adorably with its styling queues borrowed from the Suzuki Cervo and Fronte Coupe of yesteryear. This car is could sell like hotcakes assuming buyers realise its worth.

"Build quality, which has been a bit flimsy in previous Suzuki models, has been improved and the car feels genuinely solid to drive.

"It's rivals are the Mahindra KUV, Volkswagen Up Crossover and the Hyundai Grand i10."

The new Suzuki Ignis is covered by a standard three-year or 100 000km warranty, as well as a two-year or 30 000km service plan. Services are 15 000km/12 month intervals.

DRIVEN: SUZUKI IGNIS 1,2 GLX

Suzuki is at it again with the next in a successful line-up of good-to-drive and fair-on-the-wallet offerings. The latest, the Ignis, is possibly one of the best, as we discovered on the Western Cape launch this week.

The looks are sporty and funky with a neat kick-up over the rear doors that includes a design element from way back in the form of faux-louvres. Two great, stand-out colour schemes are available on the range-topping GLX: metallic red with a black roof and side-mirror caps and a metallic blue with white roof and mirrors. Matching striping and headlamp surrounds are also available if you wish to customise your vehicle.

There are only two spec levels: GL and GLX. Only the GLX was available to drive and this is likely to be the most popular of the range. A robotised automatic is also offered on the GLX, but this costs a fair deal more and is not nearly as easy to drive as the manual gearbox mated to the lively 1,2-litre four cylinder engine. The power output may be only 61 kW with 113 N.m of torque (slightly less than as found in the Swift), but with a kerb mass of just 850 kg, the Ignis accelerates well with two heavy-ish adults and some luggage.

As there is no turbo, there is no turbo-lag, which means the car pulls from idle cleanly and keeps pulling right up to the 6 300 r/min soft limiter. The engine also emits a sporty growl, which combines with a super slick gearshift to result in plenty of fun. Steering is electrically assisted and very slightly vague at lower speeds, but this improves once on the move. It is well above average for this type of steering so we can’t complain too much.

The ride is also fine, absorbing bumps well while being able to tackle the corners of Du Toitskloof pass with relative ease. As this is a crossover style of vehicle, the ground clearance is generous at 180 mm. A set of 15-inch alloys is fitted to the GLX and aluminium roof-rails complete the semi-off road character. Tyres are fuel-saving Bridgestone Ecopias.

The cloth seats are well proportioned and there is sufficient space front and rear for adults. The only small criticism is that the compact width of the Ignis means that two large front seat occupants may bump elbows when the driver shifts gears. The back seat has two headrests and a lap belt for the middle occupant. One other small crit is that the sunvisors are a bit small for our harsh African sun. The boot size is claimed to be 260 litres and there is fortunately a full-size steel spare wheel. A touchscreen info system is optional although the standard fitment includes Bluetooth, USB and a CD player, plus steering wheel controls.

Fuel consumption is claimed at just 5,1 L/100 km for this manual model and no carbon tax is added. Acceleration to 100 km/h is quick enough at a claimed 11,6 seconds with a top speed of 165 km/h. Dual airbags, ABS and Isofix anchors are standard on all models. The warranty is three years or 100 000 km while a two-year or 30 000 km service plan is included, with intervals of 15 000 km.

To highlight the main differences between the GLX and the GL versions, for the extra R20 000 of the GLX you gain alloy wheels, LED projector headlamps and daytime running lights, front foglamps, rear park sensors, folding mirrors, steering wheel audio and phone controls, keyless start, auto air-conditioning, Bluetooth, six speakers instead of two, chrome trim interior elements, driver’s seat height adjustment and, of course, the roof rails. We think it’s worth it.

In short, another splendid little car from Suzuki.

The option of a touchscreen infotainment is available (approx R7 000), which will equip you with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Summary

Overall, the Ignis comes at the right time for the brand. Suzuki's newcomer joins a very buoyant segment, has notable hipster appeal and a good variety of standard features (on both the GL and GLX derivatives). On top of that, pricing starts at a very competitive R169 900. Strong contenders such as the Volkswagen Cross Up! play in the same field, but the Ignis offers a different look and feel (to products based on conventional hatchbacks), which will suit some buyers to a tee. What we can tell you is that it’s quite the cool little new kid on the block.

The more i look at it the uglier it gets... but like a juke some people will love it.

So at-least it is optional extra, 7k is not bad for it considering what the car cost.

Agreed. Personally it's a must-have if one is considering the car.

It will improve your daily commute; makes the dash look drastically better & lastly improve resale value/desirability.

Car review: Suzuki Ignis

It’s not very often I get in to a car at a launch and instantly develop ‘feelings’ for it. So it came as quite a surprise that a mini-love affair began almost instantly with the new Suzuki Ignis. The butterflies started as I laid eyes on it and just grew the more time I spent in it.

Suzuki Ignis

The Ignis is Suzuki’s offering of an “ultra-compact crossover”. It’s got the looks of an SUV (a mini one) and even has some of the practicalities of one, but is also an affordable budget car!

Speaking of the looks, like I mentioned, it was just about love at first sight! It’s bold, funky and chunky…or perhaps a kinder word to use is “curvey”. The rear is the only area I am a bit torn about, but who doesn’t have issues with their rear? I think the word I would use to describe this little beast is “quirky.”

It has a ground clearance of 180 mm which is rather impressive in such a car, is just 3,7 metres long and 1,69 metres wide. It has pronounced wheel arches, a high waistline and a design that is unmistakably Suzuki. Bear in mind that the designer of this dashing car, Giorgetto Giugiaro, was named Car Designer of the Century and was behind icons like the Golf Mk1, DeLorean, Lotus Esprit to name but a few.

Suzuki Ignis rear

Inside is just as impressive. It’s clean and modern! And it feels quite spacious considering its dimensions. The boot is not huge as is expected, it sits at 260-litres but if you fold the rear seatback flat, you will get 469-litres of luggage space. You can opt for the entry-level GL or range topping GLX trim levels.

Suzuki Ignis

It is powered by the well-known 1,2-litre four-cylinder engine which you will know from the Swift. You can expect 61 kW of power and 113 N.m of torque. Because the Ignis is so light, this engine is more than capable, especially around town. The open road also proved to be pleasant which again, came as a surprise. I didn’t feel the need to throw my weight forward to make it go faster (don’t pretend you don’t do the same!). Look, it’s not a performance car…obviously…but it’s by no means slow. Fuel consumption is claimed at a low 4,9l/100 km on the automatic and 5,1l/100 km for the 5-speed manual.

Suzuki Ignis

We even got to drive it on some rather uneven terrain. Most car brands will have you believe their cars are capable off the beaten track and then put you on light gravel. This terrain however was not light gravel, in fact there were many a bump and grind and a lot of “rockiness”. The Ignis nailed it! It felt sure-footed and never faulted over the deep holes and big bumps. It’s the generous ground clearance we can thank!

Suzuki Ignis

Suzuki was awarded Brand of the Year at the Cars.co.za awards in January. The Ignis was runner up in the 2017 World Urban Car Awards.

The Suzuki Ignis Range

The Suzuki Ignis range consists of three models, spanning two specification levels, and two transmission choices. The efficient 1,2-litre four-cylinder engine is employed across all three variants.

The new Suzuki Ignis is covered by a standard three-year/100 000 km warranty, as well as a two-year/30 000 km service plan. Services are at 15 000 km/12 month intervals.
