2018 Ford EcoSport (Facelift)

Dead, In The US: Ford EcoSport

The small SUV will be discontinued here next year, according to a new report.

The Ford EcoSport starts at $20,395 and is Ford’s smallest SUV. It’s even smaller than the Escape, which starts at $25,555. But apparently in part because of Ford’s retrenchment from India, the EcoSport will be dead here after mid-next year.

That’s according to the Detroit Free Press, which says that Ford shutting down production in India, where EcoSports are assembled for the U.S., means the demise of the EcoSport here, too. The EcoSport will still be sold in Europe, via Ford’s factory in Romania, according to the Freep. The Freep also talked to various analysts who had rude things to say about the Ford EcoSport.

“Ecosport was never really a fit for the American consumer,” said Maeva Ribas, manager of design research and strategy at The CARLAB Inc., an automotive product planning consulting group based in southern California.
“Ford is just rectifying a misconception. Ecosport does not belong in the U.S.,” she said.
Others expressed a similar lackluster response.
“The demise of the Ford EcoSport in the U.S. comes as no surprise. It is made in India, where Ford has been winding down its business,” said Michelle Krebs, executive analyst for the online marketplace Autotrader.com. “Plus, the EcoSport was never a strong seller. It didn’t measure up to some very tough competition in the subcompact SUV segment.”

Ford EcoSport production restarts in India for export markets

Even as their morale is down with job losses looming, workers at the Chennai plant in India have restarted production of the Ford EcoSport SUV for export markets, an official said.

The company has an export commitment of about 30 000 units which has to be completed by the end of this calendar year.

The workers union has also asked for a meeting with the top officials of Ford Motor Company involved in the decision of closing down three of the four plants in India.

"Production at the Chennai plant is going on as per schedule. The per day count of vehicles rolled out would differ as it depends on the production schedule," the workers union official told IANS on the condition of anonymity.

"The company has to export about 30 000 cars by the end of this year. So, the management has cajoled the workers to restart production while holding talks relating to the plant closure," another worker told IANS preferring anonymity.

A day before the Ganesh Chaturthi festival on September 9, Ford India announced that it will wind down vehicle assembly in Sanand by the fourth quarter of 2021, and vehicle and engine manufacturing in Chennai by the second quarter of 2022.

Ford India has four plants in the country - vehicle and engine plants in Chennai and Sanand.

The company makes the EcoSport models at Chennai, while Figo is made at Sanand.

Ford India's Chennai plant is the sole manufacturer of the Ecosport model sold in the US; and the Figo models sold in Mexico and South Africa.

REVIEW | The 2021 Ford EcoSport Black is a practical compact SUV, and more spacious than you'd think

• The Ford EcoSport is one of the local automaker's top-selling passenger cars.
• The EcoSport Black was launched earlier in April and has a more sportier appeal.
• It's priced at R336 900.

Our little getaway was at the famous Club Mykonos in Langebaan, and since it wasn't quite school holidays just yet, we had missed the holiday rush to the favourite destination. This means we could explore in our car quite a bit, including climbing the embankments at the resident amusement park at the resort. The Ecosport has a ground clearance of 206mm so climbing a bit of elevated ground was no fuss. It also has a turning circle of 5.3m, so manoeuvering the car and getting in and out of tight parking spaces is easy too.

Starting price for the EcoSport range is from R303 900, while the EcoSport Black sells for R336 900. It comes standard with Ford Protect, includes a four-year or 120 000km comprehensive warranty, three-year or unlimited distance roadside assistance and five-year or unlimited km corrosion warranty. A four-year or 60 000km service plan is included, with 15 000km service intervals.

Ford Everest, EcoSport now sold with FordPass Connect app as standard feature

• Ford South Africa are now expanding its FordPass Connect app to Everest and EcoSport models.

• On the EcoSport, only Trend and Titanium derivatives are compatible with the app.

• FordPass Connect was launched in South Africa at the start of 2021.

Having debuted in the Ranger FX4 at the start of 2021, Ford South Africa is now expanding its FordPass Connect app to the Everest and EcoSport models. Using FordPass, users can remotely start their vehicles, schedule a start, lock or unlock the doors, check fuel levels and other vehicle-related information, locate their vehicles, or book a service.

FordPass has been created to enhance the ownership experience and make living with a Ford that much easier by incorporating an embedded factory-fitted modem in the vehicle.

FordPass Connect is now standard on all Everest models and Trend and Titanium derivatives of the EcoSport.

Not dead yet! Decade-old Ford EcoSport outsells fresher Indian-built rivals

Ford’s EcoSport is long in the tooth and its future unclear, so it shouldn’t be a strong seller, should it? Well, South African buyers seem to disagree.

The BK-generation Ford EcoSport was revealed a full decade ago, before hitting the South African market a year later. Locally, the small Fiesta-based crossover quickly skipped up the sales charts, endearing itself to South Africans with its compact exterior dimensions, penchant for fuel efficiency and attractive entry price (back in 2013, you could have one for R199 000).

Over time, the EcoSport supplanted the Fiesta and Figo as the Blue Oval brand’s most consistent volume driver in the passenger-vehicle space, playing a crucial support role to the popular light-commercial Ranger. Thing is, the little crossover has been afforded just a single major update (along with a smattering of minor tweaks and an obligatory special-edition variant) over the past 10 or so years, with its mid-cycle refresh having rolled around in 2018.

Today, the landscape in this part of the market looks markedly different, having since erupted with pint-sized, high-riding competitors, most of which are imported from India (and are a little more compact at around four metres long). In addition, the EcoSport’s local future seems somewhat uncertain since the Chennai plant from which base-spec derivatives are sourced is currently winding down its operations, with the doors scheduled to shut in the second quarter of 2022.

So, with more – not to mention exceedingly fresher – competitors than ever and a starting price that’s crept to the wrong side of R300 000, one might think EcoSport sales would falter. Based on December 2021’s sales statistics, the opposite is in fact the case. Ford registered as many as 765 units of the EcoSport during the month (up 135 units on November’s figures), which was enough to make it the sixth best-selling passenger car in the country. That’s no mean feat.

Ford EcoSport versus Indian-built rivals in December 2021

1. Ford EcoSport – 765 units

2. Nissan Magnite – 679 units

3. Renault Kiger – 555 units

4. Toyota Urban Cruiser – 488 units

5. Hyundai Venue – 482 units

6. Kia Sonet – 360 units

7. Suzuki Vitara Brezza – 332 units

8. Honda WR-V – 38 units

9. Mahindra XUV300 – 2 units

Ford EcoSport 1.0 Active (2022) Specs & Price

Despite the Ford EcoSport seemingly living on borrowed time, the Blue Oval brand plans to soon add a new Active derivative to its line-up in South Africa. Here’s what we know so far, including an early look at pricing…

The Ford EcoSport has been on the market in South Africa for nearly a decade but is still selling strongly. Now the Dearborn-based firm’s local division plans to add a new Active variant to the range, with the first units slated to arrive in dealerships in either June or July 2022.

Before we get into the details, let’s take a step back and consider the future of the EcoSport badge. Ford’s local division currently sources its EcoSport units from two plants: the base Ambiente variants come from the soon-to-be-shuttered Chennai facility in India, while the mid- and top-spec Trend and Titanium derivatives are shipped in from Romania.

Rumour has it production will have ceased at both of these plants by the close of the year, spelling the end for the nameplate globally. Still, Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa has told us the EcoSport will “remain on sale in South Africa throughout 2022”, even if it has already confirmed the end of the road for the Fiesta and Figo.

The new-to-SA Active model (which was revealed in Europe back in late-2020) will be sourced from Romania, which means it will be powered by Ford’s familiar 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine. As it does in the Trend and Titanium derivatives, this EcoBoost powerplant delivers 92 kW and 170 Nm to the front axle. From what we understand, the EcoSport Active will be available exclusively in six-speed automatic guise.

The EcoSport Active will ship standard with a 4-year/120 000 km warranty. A 4-year/60 000 km service plan will be optional.

DRIVEN: New Ford EcoSport Active model adds some shine

We were quite impressed with the ride quality, however, and how composed it feels on twisty sections of asphalt despite the vehicle’s high centre of gravity. The Ford Fiesta chassis beneath it really does wonders for its on-road manners and the steering has a direct and communicative feel to it.

Overall, the Ford EcoSport has aged well considering the pre-facelift model was launched nine years ago, but with so much competition out there it’s no longer the obvious choice. Ford would do well to replace it with something fresher at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Just in time to intercept the Volkswagen Taigo - Ford launches new EcoSport Active SUV

- The latest Active version bolsters Ford's highly successful EcoSport range based on the Trend.
- Distinctive and unique styling enhancements emphasise its sporty character.
- The versatile, spacious cabin gains a more upmarket edge with model-specific partial leather seats.

Ford's highly successful EcoSport range has been bolstered with the addition of a new special edition model – the EcoSport Active. As one of the most popular vehicles in the rapidly growing mini sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment, the introduction of the EcoSport Active adds a more significant dose of distinctive style and a more rugged appearance to the local EcoSport line-up.

The EcoSport Active is based on the popular mid-range EcoSport Trend 1.0 EcoBoost Automatic. Thanks to a range of unique styling and feature enhancements, it adds an appealing measure of distinction to the mix.

Building on the aptly named Trend model in the EcoSport range, the trendy special edition EcoSport Active gains a more rugged and dynamic appearance that hints at its adventurous character. This is thanks to the bold black treatment for the front grille, headlamp surround and foglamp bezels, and sporty black front and rear skirts. The athletic demeanour is further emphasised with black wheel arch mouldings and the adoption of stunning 17-inch Active design black alloy wheels for a more muscular stance.

The dark finishes extend to black mirror caps and roof rails and dark-tinted privacy glass for the rear windows. The roof is painted black, providing a bold contrast to the four available paint colours: Frozen White and three distinctive metallic options comprising eye-catching Luxe Yellow, Solar Silver and Magnetic dark grey.

An 'Active' badge on the front fenders asserts this model's special edition status, which is carried through to the cabin and features prominently on the leather seats, which replace the cloth seats used in the standard Trend models.

The final EcoSport has rolled out of Ford’s manufacturing facility in Chennai. The last unit seen in these images is destined for export markets.

Last year, Ford announced its exit from the Indian market. The company started winding down its operations soon after the announcement.

Production at the Sanand plant ended in October 2021 after the last unit of the Figo Freestyle rolled out of the facility.

The Chennai plant remained operational till now, producing cars and engines for export markets.

Ford has no plans to resume its operations in India. The carmaker sold its Sanand factory to Tata Motors earlier this year. The Chennai unit is also expected to be put up for sale soon.

Ford EcoSport production ends in India: what this means for SA

Production of the Ford EcoSport has officially ceased in India. What does this mean for the South African market? Let’s take a closer look…

The final example of the Indian-build Ford EcoSport has rolled off the assembly line in Chennai, signalling the end of the Blue Oval brand’s production operations in that country.

In September 2021, Ford announced plans to exit the Indian market, though continued to build vehicles for export to markets such as South Africa. Now, according to various publications, including Autocar India, the curtains have finally come down at both of the automaker’s Indian factories.

So, what does this mean for the EcoSport in South Africa? Well, first we should point out only the Ambiente variants fitted with the atmospheric 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine were sourced from the Chennai facility, while the mid- and top-spec Trend and Titanium derivatives powered by the brand’s 1.0-litre turbo-triple engine are still being shipped over from Romania (for now).

From what we understand, Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa has secured a large allocation of the Indian-built Ambiente from that final production run, suggesting this stockpile will be enough to see it through the remainder of 2022. As things stand, the turbocharged variants are still being built at the Craiova plant.
