Leaked! Ford EcoSport handed the ‘Active’ treatment in Europe

The first images of the new Ford EcoSport Active variant have leaked online ahead of the fresh model’s official unveiling in the first week of November 2020.

Ford Europe earlier announced the EcoSport would receive the Active treatment on that continent, with the reveal set for 6 November. However, the folks over at autonocion.com have unearthed and published images ahead of the unveiling.

As expected, the EcoSport Active gains additional plastic cladding over its wheel arches, under its front and rear bumpers and along its flanks. The newcomer furthermore sports a gloss-black finish for its roof and side-mirror caps, along with a new alloy wheel design.

Inside, the Blue Oval brand has added its “A” logo to the seats, while the windows appear to have been tinted, too. It’s not yet clear whether the EcoSport Active benefits from any suspension tweaks.

Wife called me in a panic this morning. EcoSport refused to start and she had an appointment for the kids to be at. I rushed home with jumper cables which refused to work (my staff have clearly broken them).

Fortunately we have a long, steep downhill driveway so I managed to bump start it. Drove to HiQ and had the third battery installed (factory lasted 18 months, first replacement 3.5yrs)
 
Fresh Ford EcoSport Active variant officially revealed in Europe

Ford in Europe has officially revealed its new EcoSport Active variant after initial images were leaked online.

The Blue Oval brand says the EcoSport Active offers “more rugged styling and enhanced versatility” compared with the standard model.

As we saw in the leaked images, the Active treatment includes additional body cladding as well as a gloss-black finish for the roof and side-mirror caps. There’s also a fresh alloy wheel design and "Active" exterior badging.

In addition, Ford has confirmed the EcoSport Active features an (unspecified) increase in ride height compared with the standard version of the small crossover. Inside, the company has added an “A” logo to the seats, while the windows appear to have been tinted, too.

So, will the EcoSport Active be offered in South Africa? Well, all Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa will tell us is that the newcomer is "not confirmed" for a local introduction. Still, it’s by no means inconceivable considering SA receives its 1,0-litre EcoBoost derivatives from the same Craiova plant in Romania that will produce this new variant.

Value crossover joins the Focus and Fiesta in receiving a protective bodykit and suspension lift

The Ford Ecosport is the latest model in the brand's line-up to receive a rugged Active variant, following the Fiesta and Focus.

Sitting at the top of the range alongside the two-tone version of the ST-Line car, the Ecosport Active is priced from £21,645 and aimed at helping "adventure-loving customers get the most from their active lifestyles".

The new trim option brings familiar off-road-inspired visual addenda such as chunky black plastic wheel arches and side skirts, while a subtle suspension lift offers improved ability over rough terrain.

Interior tweaks over existing trim levels are minimal, with the new variant marked out primarily by its leather seats with 'Active' badging in the backrest,

The Ecosport remains available with a choice of two 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engines or a 1.5-litre diesel, all of which drive the front axle via a six-speed manual gearbox.

Ford has added some flavour to its compact SUV line-up with the new EcoSport Black, and unlike many other sporty editions, this one does not force you to shop at the expensive end of the range.

The new Ford EcoSport Black is based on the 1.5-litre Ambiente auto model, which makes it the fourth cheapest in the range of eight derivatives. Priced at R336 900, the EcoSport Black commands a R14 000 premium over the model it’s based on, and costs R10 000 less than the 1.0T Trend variant.

Setting it apart from the base-spec Ambiente trim is a black finish for the skid plate and front grille as well as black decals on the bonnet and doors. The roof and mirrors are also finished in black, as are the 16-inch alloy wheels, which replace the 15” steelies fitted to the aforementioned entry model.

Customers can choose from five exterior colours: Canyon Ridge, Diamond White, Moondust Silver, Smoke and Blue Lightning.

Also included is a four-year/120 000km warranty and four-year/60 000km service plan.

You'd have to be short of a few chromosomes to buy this over the Trend. Ford must really take that watered down sync2 3310 display and sex and travel now. Getting a Trend with charcoal mags, Sync3 8 inch touchscreen and leather steering wheel makes this black edition look stupid.
 
Oh, good time to add: my folks recently bought a 2021 Titanium. Really great build quality and inside finish. Keeping in mind that the Titanium and Trend are built in Europe while the Ambiente comes from India, the difference in build and materials is very evident! Also of interest is that the rear bumper of the Euro models extends further out under that spare wheel than the Ambiente bumper. Purely for looks as far as I can tell.

The Ford EcoSport is one of the Blue Oval's most popular models and has been the leader in its respective segment. With the addition of the limited-run Ford EcoSport Black, the brand hopes to dominate the market even further.

Based on the EcoSport Ambiente 1.5 Auto, the EcoSport Black receives some cosmetic upgrades in black, hence the name. The front grille and skid plate is finished in black, with black decals on the flanks and bonnet. There's a painted black roof, integrated black roof rails and 16-inch black alloy wheels that replace the basic 15-inch steel rims on the standard model. There are black mirror caps and a black spare wheel cover.

How much does the Ford EcoSport cost?

All EcoSport models come standard with Ford Protect, comprising a four-year/120 000km comprehensive warranty, three-year/unlimited distance roadside assistance and five-year/unlimited km corrosion warranty. A four-year/60 000km service plan is included, with 15 000km service intervals.

This new Kia and another newcomer which I can't recall, offer way better value now than the EcoSport Ambiente. However, what is never highlighted by car journo's, is that a lot of the newcomers only have driver and passenger front airbags while the Ambiente EcoSport still has 6.

The amount of people I see not stopping at stop streets anymore, makes me glad that my wife and kids have side and curtain airbags in the SO's Ambiente....

Had a Fiesta which is pretty much the same platform the Ecosport was built on and my battery lasted 5 years, the original factory battery, I would suggest you have the alternator and systems looked at. There seems to be a problem there.

You are so right I will never buy Ford again. Back in my dads days they were a different breed of cars, the Cortina 3.0s and the XR6 cortina and a neighbour had a Sierra XR8

Sad considering that we won't be getting the Mach E, Puma, Fiesta ST, Focus & Focus ST and by the looks of it I don't think we'll be getting a new Kuga. Atleast VW and Toyota still offers similar types of vehicles that they did in the 80s & 90s excluding large sedans

Sedans are becoming an endangered species which is a pity for people like me that love sedans over the SUVs
