Ford readies new Fiesta-based small SUV to replace Ecosport
Reinvented compact crossover shows close alignment to Fiesta as prototypes begin winter testing
New images show Ford's Fiesta-based small SUV, which will replace the Ecosport in the firm’s range, carrying out winter testing.
The new compact crossover has been photographed sporting heavily disguised Fiesta-based bodywork but with a clear SUV-style raised ride height.
The as-yet-unnamed model, which could retain the Ecosport nameplate or take on a new identity more closely aligned to the Fiesta, will serve as a replacement for the ageing Ecosport as the smallest model in Ford’s SUV range.
Linking the styling of the new car closer to the Fiesta could help Ford increase its competitiveness in the fast-growing crossover market. The Fiesta was the best-selling car in Britain in 2018, while the Ecosport has long struggled against rivals such as the Nissan Juke and Seat Arona.
The car is set to share a platform - and possibly an engine range, including the popular Ecoboost petrol powertrains - with the Fiesta. That means it's likely to be front-wheel drive, although a four-wheel-drive system could potentially be carried over from the current Ecosport.
It will sit alongside the Fiesta Active, a jacked-up version of the supermini.
Ford has not specified when the new compact SUV will be unveiled, but a launch is expected within the next two years as the Ecosport has been available in its current form for six years.

If they could somehow rejig the Ecosport pricing downwards, they could easily get it into the Top 10 sales charts again. I have said it before, but the reason it used to be a top 10 seller (and sometimes top 6) was because of how keen the pricing was when Ford Credit offered big discounts. With the T6 facelift 2.0 now on dealer floors, maybe Ford Credit (Absa Fleet) will stop their Ranger aimed discount deals and send some love back to the Ecosport line like in 2015/2016 when I bought for a steal

Called the ‘Project BX775’, the new Ford EcoSport’s development work is underway at Ford’s Camacari plant in Brazil.
It was reported that the next-gen Ford EcoSport will be produced by either Mahindra-Ford partnership or Chagan (Ford’s partner in China). The new report claims that the new model is being developed on very unique lines and will be vastly different from the outgoing model.
The next-gen Ford EcoSport will ride on a longer wheelbase, which will allow the company to free more space inside the cabin. Adding to it, the SUV will come with hidden spare wheel. The removal of tailgate mounted spare wheel will allow Ford designers to work on the exterior styling of the SUV. Inside the cabin, the next EcoSport will receive a fully-digital instrument console similar to that of the European-spec Ford Puma.
It was speculated that the next-gen Ford EcoSport will be based on the Mahindra’s sourced X100 platform, which also underpin the XUV300 and the SsangYong Tivoli. It is now reported that the new model will be developed on the Fiesta’s B-platform. While the base will remain the same, the design of the SUV will see drastic changes. The next-gen Ford EcoSport is expected to be launched around 2021.

Is this the end for Ford EcoSport small SUV?
Ford’s EcoSport could disappear from Australian showrooms next year, possibly to make room for the new Puma small SUV.
CarsGuide has learned that local dealers are now being asked to put in final stock orders of the EcoSport before production supply is expected to dry up by year’s end.
However, a Ford Australia spokesperson told CarsGuide that the brand is committed to the EcoSport for next year, but would not be drawn on its longer-term plans for the booming small crossover market.
“We will continue to offer the latest EcoSport with its upgrades, which include Sync3 with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, into 2020 as part of our full SUV line-up,” they said.
Ford’s EcoSport has struggled to resonate commercially with customers since being introduced to local showrooms in late 2013, with its most successful 12-month period being in 2015 when it notched a year-end total of 2453 sales.
After nine months of trading in 2019, Ford has managed only 371 new registrations of the EcoSport in the sub-$40,000 small SUV market that is 92,412 units strong.
In comparison, the market-leading Mitsubishi ASX has found 16,171 new homes, while Mazda CX-3 (11,455), Hyundai Kona (9747), Honda HR-V (9191) and Nissan Qashqai (9052) are also performing significantly better than Ford’s offering.
Noticeably, the Holden Trax (3706), Haval H2 (618), Jeep Renegade (684), Nissan Juke (398) and Suzuki S-Cross (379) have all outpaced the Ford EcoSport in year-to-date sales.
The EcoSport was last updated in December 2017 with a significant facelift, meaning the small SUV is likely approaching the end of its life cycle in its current form.
The timing puts the Puma in prime position to pounce and draw attention to Ford’s small SUV offering with a new nameplate.
Curiously, the Puma will be built in a facility in Romania, which also produces right-hand-drive (RHD) EcoSports for European markets.
Australian-spec EcoSports come from an Indian factory, which also builds the SUV for South Africa, Japan and the US.
A possible scenario could be for Ford to shutter RHD EcoSport production in India to focus on the much larger left-hand-drive US export market, leaving Ford Australia no choice but to source the Puma to slot in as its small SUV competitor.
The larger sized and better equipped Puma could be justification for a price increase compared to the EcoSport as well, which would also mask the expected higher costs in sourcing from Europe instead of India.

For anyone considering these. Just keep in mind that the lock issue that was highlighted on Carte Blanche still affects these vehicles despite Ford stating it doesn't.

There is a guy that physically disables the lock from turning and blanks it off. We finally went this route, but it means that if the remote locking goes out - we're screwed cause Ford only gives one remote.
The lockbox will only work if you bolt it to the car, otherwise the door just opens and they can carry the lockbox away. And then you have to be comfortable with the knowledge that another criminal went snooping through your vehicle - looking at your stuff and deciding what he want to take or leave.
Yip. The locks are stupid. The guy mentioned above fixes brand new cars this way.... Yet people still buy them. Boggles the mind.
