Do yourself a favor - if you're in the JHB area - when you walk past or even drive past any Ford Ecosport, Fiesta or Focus, look for any damage to the key opening - like the slot being bent or little dents around the area. You will be absolutely blown away by how many Fords are affected by this.

Not if they give it to me for free. They want to charge close to R5k everytime this happens, even though it their fault for putting in **** locks. They now have an "upgraded" lock that at least sounds the alarm - if the bad guys open the boot. The doors don't even have sensors for the alarm.

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa has quietly expanded its EcoSport range with the addition of a new automatic version of the base Ambiente trim level.

The arrival of the newcomer increases the local EcoSport line-up from six to seven derivatives, and comes as Ford SA adds to its Figo range with fresh Freestyle cross-hatch variants.

The 1,5 Ambiente AT is priced at R297 600, which makes it some R17 900 more expensive than the manual version and R36 300 cheaper than the 1,0 EcoBoost Trend AT. The new variant employs the Blue Oval brand’s naturally aspirated 1,5-litre, three-cylinder petrol unit, which sends its 91 kW and 150 N.m to the front axle via a six-speed automatic transmission (as opposed to a five-speed manual).

Ford SA confirms new entry-level EcoSport auto, upgrades other variants

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa has confirmed the expansion of its EcoSport range to include an automatic version of its entry-level Ambiente petrol model.

At the start of April 2020, CARmag.co.za broke the news (including pricing) but now Ford SA has confirmed the arrival of an additional EcoSport derivative. In addition, the Blue Oval brand’s local arm has revealed “specification upgrades” for the Trend and Titanium variants.

As a reminder, the new 1,5 Ambiente AT is priced at R297 600, which makes it some R17 900 more expensive than the manual version and R36 300 cheaper than the 1,0 EcoBoost Trend AT. For the record, missus has 2018 Trend Auto. Some thoughts after 18 months:
Fuel consumption is poor, computer says 8.9L/100km, but tank to tank calculations gives 9.8L/100km (both over the lifetime of the vehicle). This is marginally better than my 2015 Ranger 2.2. Best consumption was on a trip from Pta to Parys at 7.13L/100km.
It has 17" wheels, not 16" as mentioned in a video review earlier in the thread.
A nice zippy car to drive, with plenty of oomph, especially when comparing it with the aunty's previous Corolla 1.6 auto. However, one has to avoid using that oomph to keep the fuel consumption down.
The pressed steel rim on the spare is also a rip-off when compared with the older models.

So, is it worth buying? Not in this current state of tune, as the autobox really needs some attention, perhaps a shorter ratio all round to give it more of an alert feel in the hands.

I’d advise spending a little bit more and getting a 1.0T Trend auto because you get the best combination of useable performance and all the cool Ford tech and safety for not much more money than the Ambiente.

All EcoSports come with a 4-year/120 000km warranty and the Ambiente Auto comes with a 4-year/60 000km Service Plan.

You know whats sad, this costs more than an automatic Titanium cost back in 2015 (think it was R285 000 back then).

I paid R195k for our Ambiente manual in 2015 and that included all onroad costs etc. Over 50% jump in 5yrs.

And that is why my SO still has the caras her daily, with an extra 3yrs of factory warranty and only 53k on the clock....

Verdict

We enjoyed our time with the Ecosport 1.5 Ambiente automatic – its go-anywhere attitude (within reason of course) was refreshing. However, the keenly-priced Ford's sluggish (let's be kind and say, workmanlike) powertrain is probably the weakest link in the overall package. We suspect that many buyers, especially those at altitude (Gauteng) will find this engine’s performance too compromised, which may force them to dig deeper into their pockets (if they can) for the 1.0T Trend automatic (priced from R354 800) or look to rivalling brands for a solution... but at additional cost, of course.

Nonetheless, for those buyers that are not too concerned with outright performance and are willing to accept this EcoSport’s spatial shortcomings, the 1.5 Ambiente automatic represents a fairly solid purchasing (let alone fuel-efficient) proposition. Yes, the automatic transmission could be smoother-shifting, but the sheer convenience of having a self-shifting box is pretty alluring at this price point in the market. The next cheapest automatic compact family car/small SUV option is the Haval H2 priced from R324 900, which is a bit larger than the EcoSport.

Performance aside, buyers will also have to decide whether the EcoSport meets their needs in terms of practicality. There are more spacious options on the market and, as we mentioned earlier in this review, the EcoSport is probably best suited to young families; those buyers who require a more spacious cabin will have to look elsewhere – and be willing to pay more.

All things considered, we think that buyers looking for an affordable automatic compact family car should put this EcoSport on their shortlist and book a test drive. You have nothing to lose!
