Ford developing dual-clutch Fiesta ST, new Fiesta RS – report

A fresh report out of Australia suggests that Ford is hard at work developing both a dual-clutch version of its new Fiesta ST hot hatch and a hardcore Fiesta RS hyper hatch.

According to motoring.com.au, an automatic Fiesta ST is set to arrive first, with the rumoured Fiesta RS to follow by 2020.

The addition of a dual-clutch model to the new Fiesta ST (currently offered in six-speed manual guise only) would allow Ford’s B-segment blaster – which employs a turbocharged 1,5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine producing 147 kW and 290 N.m – to compete directly with self-shifting models such as the Renault Clio RS and latest Volkswagen Polo GTI.

And the supposed, first-ever Fiesta RS? Well, little is known about this one (we’d obviously expect shoutier styling and further improved performance, likely courtesy of a larger engine), although rumours of its existence are certainly not new.

The Australian publication questioned Leo Roeks, the head of Ford Performance in Europe, about these two proposed models. His reply, accompanied by what motoring.com.au described as a broad grin? “I can’t tell you, but I’m very busy”…

Haven't they (Ford) said there won't be a Fiesta RS? Saw a video interview of some big person at ford saying there won't be a fiesta rs.

I believe so but that does not mean they mind telling a fib at that point in time to hide the fact they are actually developing one.

Sorry, folks: the rumoured Ford Fiesta RS is NOT happening

Every now and then, a rumour emerges suggesting that a Ford Fiesta RS is the pipeline (the most recent courtesy of a report out of Australia). But Ford’s design director in Europe has now poured cold water on claims that the Blue Oval brand is planning a fresh performance flagship to sit above the new Fiesta ST.

Speaking to AutoRAI.nl, Amko Leenarts, design director for Ford of Europe, insisted that a Fiesta RS would be unnecessary.

“We see no reason to bring a more powerful Fiesta model above the ST”, Leenarts told the Dutch publication.

“The performance of the new Fiesta ST is already such a high level that a more powerful model is not necessary,” he added.

For the record, the new Fiesta ST’s turbo-triple produces 147 kW and 290 N.m, with the hot hatch featuring selectable drive modes (normal, sport and track). It will complete the obligatory dash from standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 6,5 seconds (and top out at 232 km/h), making it four-tenths quicker than the outgoing 1,6-litre model. It’s also swifter than the DSG-equipped Volkswagen Polo GTI (6,7 seconds) and EDC-only Renault Clio RS 220 Trophy (6,6 seconds).

Ford will build the new Fiesta ST in both three- and five-door body styles, with a manual gearbox as standard (for now, at least). A launch control system developed “for use on track only” will be optional, as will a Quaife (mechanical) limited-slip differential.

Ahhhh  first video I saw about a fiesta RS was true.

Even though the idea of a Fiesta RS is pretty sweet, I guess Ford keeps it that we mod the fezz ourselves.

My guess is R360k onwards.

Any idea when the new Fiesta ST is due to be at dealers in SA? Looking at getting one but if it's still months away then I'm going to look elsewhere.

Said to be early 2019 only. Aussie-land also getting in early 2019.

Euro launch just happened very recently not sure why there is that 6-9 months delay.

Eish, There goes that idea then, won't be able to wait that long. Back to the drawing board then :(

New P-GTI? Or are you a stick shift-only kinda oak?

hmm, think I might use a ford fleet vehicle (probably a 2017 normal fiesta) for a few months until the new ST comes out then change.
