2018 Lexus NX

Lexus NX

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“Lexus presents a suave alternative to the standard German fare”

This car is a solid cash cow for Lexus, so it’s going to be more of the same from a brand-new version. Hence the smooth evolution. And it’s a successful one, too – the car provides a suave alternative to the usual German fare and helps Lexus to stop haemorrhaging company car sales to other carmakers offering bigger batteried plug-ins. It’s still an SUV, though, so forgive us if we don’t get too excited.

Lexus NX to Debut New Infotainment System in 2022

Lexus fans will be happy to know that the luxury Japanese firm will be ushering in a new infotainment system that will make its debut in the new NX crossover due in South Africa in 2022.

The new Lexus NX is due to land in South Africa early in 2022 and when it arrives, customers will be treated to the very latest infotainment technology from Lexus.

The new infotainment system is housed in a large 14-inch touchscreen which is said to be glare-free and offers simple functionality and is pegged to be far more intuitive than the current system.

With Lexus’ Connected Services activated, the driver will have access to Drive Connect Cloud Navigation that incorporates zoom, pan, tilt and intuitive touch control functionality. The navigation also includes Google Point-Of-Interest and you can share your journey with your loved ones if you wish. System updates can also be carried out over-the-air.

The new infotainment system will also feature a new Voice Assistant which responds to natural language and can be used for a variety of tasks such as setting the climate control, audio settings or navigation, it can all be done by saying, “Hey, Hi, Hello, Okay Lexus”.

The system will of course be Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible and will be able to connect wirelessly, as standard. Pairing via Bluetooth is said to be quick and up to 5 devices can be paired (only 2 can be paired at the same time). Music lovers will also be able to stream music via Apple Music using WiFi connect.

Lexus NX 350h 2022 UK review

Should I buy one?

Lexus says most people who buy an NX F-Sport will do so for the looks rather than the boosted driving dynamism. You could say the same about the new NX in a wider sense.

But there are evidently plenty of people who are ready to buy a mid-sized SUV that cuts a dash, is appealing to travel in, runs efficiently, comfortably and quietly and is easy to operate – and who don’t care in the slightest how much more than that they may get out of the driving experience. These people won’t be buying an alternative premium SUV - just a good one.

From its drivability, real-world efficiency and refinement to its on-board technology and cabin allure, the new NX is a significantly more complete car than it used to be. And as a template for wider success via confident, clearly differentiated design, Lexus could do a lot worse than to continue following its lead in other market segments.

We testdrove an NX200T in 2017. Really loved it. problem was that for the base spec it was more than a fully loaded tiguan. Still lovely vehicle.

Glad I took the plunge. 2021 Sonic Titanium F-Sport, fully loaded.
Unique, serenely quiet, super safe with enough dynamics in Sport+ mode when the standard active/adaptive suspension kicks in to complement the 175kW to have some fun.

The standard 7-year warranty incl. full maintenance plan and yearly best of the best reliability ratings across the world clinched it for us. We keep our cars longer than 10 years.

Afraid I won't get the same R 120k discount on the new model coming this year... and it's likely to breach the R 1m mark, or else I would be calling in my order.

Lexus NX (2022) Specs & Price

The new Lexus NX range has touched down in South Africa and we’ve uncovered local pricing. Here’s what you need to know, including how much this fresh-faced luxury crossover will cost you…

The new Lexus NX has made its way to South Africa, though the line-up interestingly comprises just a pair of purely petrol-powered models at launch.

Whereas the outgoing three-strong range was topped by a hybrid derivative, the second-generation line-up features (for now) only the NX 250 EX and NX 350 F Sport, neither of which benefits from any sort of electrification. Considering Toyota South Africa Motors’ recent hybrid offensive, we’re guessing such a powertrain option is on the horizon.

Revealed in mid-2021, the new NX rides on a fresh platform, allowing it to sport a longer wheelbase, wider tracks and a lower centre of gravity. While the exterior design changes are fairly subtle, the cabin has received quite an overhaul.

Priced from R860 000, the NX 250 EX employs a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine sending 152 kW and 243 Nm to all four wheels courtesy of an 8-speed automatic transmission. This model will reach 100 kph from standstill in a claimed 9.1 seconds, before topping out at 200 kph. Lexus lists a fuel economy figure of 7.1L/100 km.

The NX 350 F Sport, meanwhile, uses a turbocharged 2.4-litre, 4-cylinder petrol unit, which sends its 205 kW and 430 Nm to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic cog-swapper, too. Although it’s a little thirstier at a claimed 8.1 litres per 100 km, Lexus says it will reach three figures in 7.0 seconds. The NX 350 F Sport kicks off at R1 075 400.

How much does the new Lexus NX cost in South Africa?

Lexus NX 250 EX – R860 000

Lexus NX 350 F Sport – R1 075 400

The new NX range includes a 7-year/105 000 km warranty along with a maintenance plan of the same length.

Lexus’ snazzy new NX is available in SA – here’s what it costs

Lexus all-new NX is here, introducing a new design, new powertrains, new connectivity and safety tech, as well as improved dynamics and performance.

Lexus claim that the second-generation NX is far more than just that, but rather the opening of a new chapter for the Lexus brand. Heralding in a new direction in design and powertrains, the mid-size luxury SUV represents a leap forward in dynamic performance for the brand. Additionally, a new multimedia platform which Lexus calls the Tazuna cockpit concept features in the second-generation NX. It comprises a 14-inch touch-display and in top-spec F Sport model features a high-grade digital instrument cluster and a colour head-up display, too.

Just two models are available at launch; the 2WD 152 kW, 239 N.m 2,5-litre naturally-aspirated EX model and the AWD 205 kW, 430 N.m turbocharged 2,4-litre F Sport. Hybrid models will join the lineup at a later stage.

An interesting bit of tech features on the new NX – safe exit assist (SEA). This system incorporates new e-latch electrically activated door handle which essentially detect cyclists or vehicles passing close to the vehicle and then keeps the door closed to avoid a collision. A full suite of assistance aids feature, too, with more three-lettered acronyms than one could ever imagine. All are aimed at keeping both occupants and pedestrians safe by way of a myriad warnings, bongs, flashing lights and steering assistance where applicable.

Pricing:
NX 250 EX – R860 000
NX 350 F Sport – R1 075 400

All NX models feature a 7-year/105 000 km Warranty and Full Maintenance Plan.

PRICING: New Lexus NX lands in South Africa as flashier X3, GLC rival

The new Lexus NX midsize SUV is set to land in South Africa soon, and the premium Japanese carmaker has released pricing ahead of launch.

The vehicle will initially be available in two flavours, with the normally aspirated 2.5-litre 250 EX model retailing at R860 000 and the 2.4-litre turbocharged F-Sport variant commanding R1 075 400. But that’s just the initial range. As you’d expect from Lexus there is a full line-up of hybrid models on the way later this year.

According to Lexus the new model ushers in more than just a new design language, it’s also a leap forward in terms of powertrains and dynamics.

The NX 250’s 2.5-litre motor powers the front wheels only and produces 152kW and 239Nm, while the all-wheel drive F Sport’s 2.4T unit is good for 205kW and 430Nm.

The new Lexus NX also introduces a new 35cm touchscreen infotainment system with “Hey Lexus!” natural speech recognition.
