New MG 3 to be unveiled at Geneva motor show

Supermini is set to go hybrid but remain one of UK's cheapest cars; take design influence from Cyberster

MG has confirmed that it will unwrap the next-generation MG 3 at the Geneva motor show on 26 February.

The Chinese brand made the announcement on X, posting an undisguised image of the new supermini's front end.

Trademark filings from September previously revealed the exterior design of the new 3, confirming that it has taken influence from both the larger MG 4 hatchback and the new MG Cyberster flagship sports car.

Unlike those cars, though, the new 3 is set to stay true to its affordable billing by sticking with petrol power rather than switching to a pricier electric drivetrain - a decision seemingly corroborated by the new car's lengthy front overhang, sizeable grille and a filler cap at the rear that's clearly too small to accommodate a CCS charging socket.

It's a great pity that SAIC (the parent company of MG China) never decided to bring their model range to South Africa, as their current sales in the UK have garnered a much better market penetration than they did in 2008 -2009 with the release in the UK of the updated MG TF LE500, and the MG 6 (which was actually based on Rover 75 / MG ZT underpinnings... ;)

I wonder if they had brought out the MG3 (Mk.1) over here at the same time that it was released over in the UK in 2014 - in both manual (UK) & Automatic (Australia / NZ) variants - if they would have usurped sales of the Polo Vivo in SA...

MG 3

The all-new MG3 is a technologically advanced hybrid supermini, offering a combination of performance, efficiency, and refinement.

Two specifications will be available in the UK at launch, each sharing the all-new Hybrid+ powertrain. MG's work on this hybrid system sees a larger battery fitted, and a more powerful electric motor, compared to the rest of the hybrid B-segment market.

The supermini is more spacious than the outgoing model, while retaining the compact footprint that makes the MG3 such a popular model, particularly for those mainly covering urban driving routes. Boasting high levels of interior equipment and space - matching the best-in-class - the MG3 Hybrid+ offers customers both practicality and efficiency. Value is further boosted with MG's trademark seven-year/80,000 miles warranty included as standard.

"With all the attributes to become a leader in its class, the all-new MG3 will offer customers a combination of efficiency and performance with MG's exciting Hybrid+ powertrain," comments David Allison, MG Motor UK Head of Product and Planning. "More refined, yet also bringing MG's fun-to-drive philosophy to the market, the MG3 is excellently equipped, both with premium interior features and MG Pilot safety systems."

State-of-the-art Hybrid+ powertrain

MG's Hybrid+ powertrain technology makes its debut on the all-new MG3, and is the first conventional, non-plug-in hybrid system fitted to an MG model. At its core, there are five key elements to the all-new Hybrid+ system - engine, transmission, battery, electric motor, and generator.

This is the all-new MG3, a radically changed hybrid supermini

MG changes things up for the 3 in a big way

This is the all-new MG3. It’s a complete revamp of the supermini, and now features a fancy hybrid powertrain.
There's been a thorough overhaul of its design, with the MG3's new wider, fatter grille, sharply angled lights and front bumper treatment certainly making it look upset about... something. Could just be smug, mind.

Not least because MG now proudly proclaims the new 3 is the fastest accelerating hybrid in its segment, with a 0-62mph time of eight seconds flat. The hybrid Toyota Yaris can only manage 9.7s.

Ah yes, hybrid. Taking on the likes of the Peugeot 208 and Vauxhall Corsa, the MG3 now gets a 100kW electric motor coupled with a 1.5-litre four-pot engine and three-speed auto ‘box. Together it all produces 191bhp, while the juice from a 1.83kWh battery is supplied by a separate generator and helps to deliver acceleration up to motorway speeds in five swift seconds.

New MG 3 aims for three-fold sales hike now Ford Fiesta is gone

Bosses say £18k hybrid supermini can "sweep up" would-be Fiesta buyers, and far outsell its predecessor

MG says its reinvented 3 can claim a much higher share of the supermini segment than its predecessor ever did - because the Ford Fiesta is no longer around to claim the lion's share of sales.

The new 3 arrives – with the option of hybrid power for the first time – around half a year after Ford axed the Fiesta, historically the best-selling small hatchback – and often overall car – in the UK.

Ford's exit from the segment – together with the MG's extensive technical and visual overhaul – could have huge implications for the MG's potential success, and indeed the company's product planning boss David Allison expects to sell 10,000 examples of the new 3 per year in the UK - nearly three times the sales of the previous car in its best year.

MG will launch an entry-level 3 that'll cost around £17k

There'll be a basic MG3 with a small petrol engine and a manual gearbox for a low price coming later this year

While the MG3 launches in hybrid form, MG hasn't forgotten some people will still want a basic manual supermini at the lowest price.
So there will be a 1.5-litre engine of about 100bhp and three pedals with a gearstick. Nothing fancy there, but it's an increasing rarity as other carmakers bin off their superminis altogether, or switch them to more expensive powertrains.

It comes to Britain in late 2024, about half a year after the hybrid model we covered here.

Prices will be announced in mid-March, so we don't have exact numbers, but MG UK's product planning boss David Allison said the hybrid will be on a par with others' pure-petrol cars, and the straight ICE car a couple of thousand below that.
