2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

Review | Mitsubishi's impressive Eclipse Cross 1.5T

• Mitsubishi South Africa introduced a 1.5T model in February 2020

• It's one of three models offered in the Eclipse Cross' local line-up

• The 1.5T produces 110kW and 250Nm

Mitsubishi's mid-size crossover the Eclipse Cross received a new engine in February this year, prior to the nationwide lockdown. Wheels24 recently sampled the latest 1.5T derivative and were deeply impressed.

At R459 995 the turbocharged Eclipse Cross is the priciest model in the range and joins the 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated derivatives in the line-up. The 1.5T makes use of a CVT 'gearbox' and drives through the front-wheels only.

A 'Turbo' badge on the rear lets you know you're in the priciest Eclipse Cross.

Overall, I was impressed by the new forced induction engine. It doesn't feel asthmatic and gives the Eclipse Cross a bit of oomph to match its strong looks.

The ride is plush, with good damping and adequate handling. There's some slight body roll but that's understandable in a lofty vehicle with ground clearance of 18cm. It rides on 18-inch wheels.

With most buyers in this segment opting for models with front-wheel drive, the combination of the new motor, styling and lots of toys makes the 1.5T a serious consideration.

Mitsubishi lauds turbocharged Eclipse Cross as its best-selling product in SA

• Eclipse Cross established itself as Mitsubishi SA's top seller.

• The three-model range is headlined by the GLS 1.5T.

• Mitsubishi says that its zero deposit deal contributed to sales influx.

Since being introduced to South Africa, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has become a strong seller for the Japanese automaker. The top model in the range, the GLS, powered by a 1.5-litre turbo engine, is the go-to offering in the three-model line-up.

Mitsubishi SA says that the 1.5 Turbo is 'rapidly driving' out of showrooms across the country, followed by the middle child in the range, the Eclipse Cross 2.0 GLS AWD.

Nic Campbell, GM for Mitsubishi SA, says: "Although the Eclipse Cross was a hit from the word go, the latest model is shining as one of the top-selling models in the MMSA (Mitsubishi Motors SA) range. The Eclipse Cross is attracting lifestyle-orientated buyers jumping to get their slice of its outstanding value, which is even more popular thanks to our ongoing assistance deals."

ROAD TEST: Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 1,5 Turbo 4x2 GLS CVT

TEST SUMMARY

The Eclipse Cross is a prime example of the ability for a well-developed turbopetrol to enhance the driving experience. The 1,5-litre boosts the quirky crossover’s appeal and it morphs into a much stronger competitor in its class.

That said, if the new addition’s surfeit performance ability does not rank highly on your list of requirements, we’d consider the 2,0-litre at some R50 000 less or look further afield and test drive any number of other impressive options before making a decision.

MITSUBISHI MOTORS CORPORATION (MMC) revealed the restyled 2022 Eclipse Cross, offering a sleek, sporty SUV appearance and improved driving confidence and comfort.

The new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will first launch in Australia and New Zealand in November 2020, and in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2021. Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross gets styling revisions for 2022

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross has just received a notable set of styling revisions, both inside and out. It will also be joined by a new plug-in hybrid variant when it hit the international market in the fourth quarter of next year.

The styling elements used for the Eclipse Cross’s exterior aim to produce a sleeker and sportier appearance. The front retains the Dynamic Shield design but now sports a new bumper guard and refreshed head- and foglamp layout.

At the rear, the hatch and window have been adjusted to give a more sophisticated line and improve visibility. The three-dimensional taillamps have been extended upwards and inwards to enhance the Cross's appearance of stability and width. The tailgate has also been rejigged to feature a sharply sculpted hexagonal design; a nod to the company’s iconic rear spare tyre mount used on models such as the Pajero.

rear lights now remind me a bit of the Nissan Xtrail
and a bit of the Volvo XC40
(do you see it?)

SA pricing: New Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross touches down

Mitsubishi has launched its updated Eclipse Cross in South Africa. Available in two variants, these being a 2,0 GLS priced at R459 995 and a 1,5T GLS at R499 995, the compact SUV receives a cleaner look as well as new tech.

Whereas most facelifts are concentrated around the front of the car, it’s the rear end that received the most attention here, with the previous model’s controversial split-level tailgate making way for a more conventional tail design that’s easier on the eye. That’s not to say that the front end has been left unattended, and here we see a bolder interpretation of Mitsubishi’s ‘Shield Face’, now sporting a split lighting design that features new twin oval headlights. Incidentally, overall length has increased by 140 mm, which means the boot is now able to cope with 437 litres of luggage.

Beneath the resculpted bonnet you’ll find one of two carried-over engines. These take the form of a normally aspirated 2-litre petrol, with 110 kW and 198 N.m, and a 1,5-litre turbopetrol that’s also good for 110 kW, but with 250 N.m of torque. Both are paired with an eight-step CVT gearbox that powers the front wheels, with Mitsubishi’s all-wheel drive option now falling away.

All models are sold with a three-year / 100 000 km warranty and five-year / 90 000 km service plan.

New 2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross aims to satisfy Mzansi’s sport-utility craving

The new Eclipse Cross is not only a game changer for Mitsubishi Motors in terms of the competitiveness of its SUV line-up, but is a segment breaker in the market with its sleek, sporty design and SUV capabilities. The Eclipse Cross is a compelling value proposition for customers, considering the quality and value it offers.

“Through dynamic performance, spirited design and progressive technology, the new Eclipse Cross is crafted to ignite passion. It will inspire customers to be bold and to break away from the norm,” says Nic Campbell, general manager of Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA).

Key features of the new Eclipse Cross range include a striking new exterior design, an extensive list of comfort features, improved practicality, proven performance, impressive safety credentials, enhanced technology and connectivity, and greater value for money.

Greater value for money

The new Eclipse Cross range is priced aggressively, starting from R459 995 for the 2.0 GLS derivative and R499 995 for the 1.5t GLS offering. Considering the host of added features and benefits over the outgoing model and the marginal difference in price, the new Eclipse Cross is well positioned to cement its place as a class leading compact SUV.

“When one considers that the Eclipse Cross has a strong SUV heritage and represents all the best attributes of the Mitsubishi brand, this makes it stand out amongst vehicles that offer affordability and very little else. Here you have a unique, high-quality vehicle that is packed with standard features and offers exceptional value for money too,” Campbell enthuses.

Enhancing the value proposition is a three-year/100 000km warranty, a five-year/90 000km service plan and five-year/unlimited mileage roadside assistance. Service intervals are set at 15 000km.

DRIVEN: Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 1,5T GLS

Verdict

With consumer’s expectations set quite high for the standard of a modern compact SUV, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross lacks quite a bit in terms of interior styling and technological refinement. What it does offer is a comprehensive list of standard features and a pleasant driving experience. Cabin comfort levels and a smooth ride quality further enhance its appeal. The Eclipse Cross is good value for money but is pitted against a tough set of challengers.
