2019 Renault Clio (Generation 5)

So my 2015 Megane suffered some sort of catastrophic failure and it's been at Renault R24 for the last 3 weeks. They've given me a 2018 Clio to drive while the Megane is being repaired!! Got to say, I love the Clio!!

It's entry level 66kw with very few bells and whistles but quite a punchy little engine and the interior build quality is very satisfying. Nice responsive touch screen, decent sound system, easy to pair and very intuitive! Really impressed!!

Renault Clio

Renault presented the All-New Clio, the fifth generation of the automotive icon. To date some 15 million units of the Renault Clio have been sold since it was launched in 1990 and it has become Groupe Renault's best-selling model worldwide. Clio represents the French population's favourite car more than any other model and has risen to the top of the B segment in Europe since 2013. In a remarkable sales performance, Clio sales increased each year between 2012 and 2018.

More modern and athletic, the All-New Renault Clio draws on the DNA responsible for its success for nearly 30 years. It builds on the strengths of each of the four previous generations, opening a new and highly anticipated chapter in an illustrious story.

From Clio I, it has all the makings of a larger vehicle. Like the model launched in 1990, the All-New Clio features technology found on higher-end vehicles such as Mégane and Espace.
From Clio II, it has adopted extremely high standards of spaciousness and comfort.
Like Clio III, it ushers in a new era in terms of perceived quality.
From Clio IV, it inherits a strong design, one that inspired the entire Renault range and became a true trademark.

Designed according to the "Evolution and Revolution" principle, the All-New Clio rewrites the rule book with more mature body styling and an entirely revamped interior. Featuring more sculpted lines and a more assertive front end, the All-New Clio gains in vitality and modernity while remaining instantly recognisable, despite the fact that it comprises 100 per cent new parts. Inside, the revolution is strikingly clear. The completely redesigned interior is inspired by higher-end segments, both in terms of perceived quality and available technology. These strengths benefit all motorists, bringing them greater practicality and ease in use.

"The fifth generation Clio is very important for us as it is the best-seller in its segment and the second best-selling car in Europe, all categories combined. The Clio is an icon, and the latest features the very best of the previous generations. The exterior design of Clio IV won over our customers and continues to do so today, so we chose to keep that DNA while bringing modernity and elegance to the new model. The interior has undergone a true revolution, with a considerable improvement in perceived quality, greater sophistication and technology. It is the best Clio yet." Laurens van den Acker, Senior Vice President, Corporate Design

The All-New Renault Clio is the spearhead of Groupe Renault's strategic plan, "Drive the Future (2017-2022)". Presented in autumn 2017, the plan has three key objectives:

Electric: by 2022, Groupe Renault will offer 12 electrified models in its range. The All-New Clio will be the first with its E-Tech hybrid engine based on technology developed by Renault.
Connected: also by 2022, the company is targeting 100 per cent connected vehicles in its key markets. The All-New Renault Clio perfectly illustrates this momentum with its new connected multimedia system developed by the Alliance.
Autonomous: by 2022, Groupe Renault will market 15 models equipped with autonomous driving technology. The All-New Clio will be a pioneer in this respect by making the driver assistance systems leading to autonomous driving widely available on a city car.

New Renault Clio: fifth-generation hatchback fully revealed!

After initially revealing only its revamped interior (read more about that here), the fifth-generation Renault Clio has now been fully unveiled, complete with a new “RS Line” trim level.

Running on the new CMF-B platform, the fifth version of the small hatchback takes clear styling inspiration from the latest Mégane, gaining bonnet creases, a larger grille and more aggressively designed front bumper.

Interestingly, the new Clio is some 14 mm shorter than its forebear, although the French firm claims it is “more spacious inside”. The body has been lowered by up to 30 mm, while wheels measure up to 17 inches (depending on the variant).

The new hatchback gains air deflectors on the front wheel arches, which Renault says “limit friction and boost aerodynamics”. The LED headlamps feature the brand’s latest C-shaped lighting signature, while a longer and thinner brake light has been fitted at the top of the rear window. Several new body colours (including Valencia Orange and Celadon Blue) will be offered.

Renault promises the boot design has been “optimised to make its shape as cubic as possible”. The (optional) premium Bose audio system has been fully integrated and therefore does not encroach on luggage space, which has been increased some 26 litres to a claimed 391 litres.

And the Clio RS Line mentioned above? Well, this trim level will effectively replace the GT-Line specification in the outgoing range, drawing inspiration from the automaker’s high-performance RS division.

The Clio RS Line gains the so-called “F1 blade” up front, along with a honeycomb-effect grille, special 17-inch wheels and “more athletic” rear end. Inside, you’ll find sports seats (with reinforced support), carbon-style inserts, a perforated leather steering wheel (with the double RS diamond), alloy pedals and red trim matching the topstitching on the seats and steering wheel.

While Renault has yet to release details about powertrain options, it’s all but certain the new engines (developed by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance) recently introduced in the Micra will do duty in this latest Clio.

New Renault Clio heads for premium segment

Renault’s all-new supermini has a roomier cabin with a swisher feel and smart tech

Renault has shown pictures of the new fifth-generation Clio supermini ahead of the model’s official unveiling at the Geneva motor show in March.

The new Clio is smaller outside yet bigger inside, with a lighter body, and Renault says it has been developed along three lines: evolutionary exterior design, revolutionary interior design and innovative technology.

Across its four previous generations, the Clio has become Renault’s bestselling model. Unusually, the Clio 4 increased its sales every year from 2012 to 2018 to become the second-bestselling car in Europe, largely thanks, Renault thinks, to its design.

“The top reason buyers give for choosing Clio is always design,” said Vincent Dubroca, the Clio’s product manager. “Way more than in other market segments, but also against its direct competitors.”

Senior vice president of design Laurens van den Acker, whose first Renault was the fourth-generation Clio, said: “When I arrived at Renault, it [the Clio] was looking for its soul. This time, we have so much to build on it would be a shame to throw it away.”

From a design perspective, then, the fifth-generation Clio seems to pick up from where the old car left off, even though it’s actually entirely new.

The Clio 5 is the first Renault to be built on the group’s CMF-B platform. At 4048mm long, it is 14mm shorter than before, with a 6mm-shorter wheelbase and a roof that’s up to 30mm lower. The body-in-white is 22kg lighter.

The interior is where the bigger changes take place, though. Van den Acker accepts Renault “dramatically needed to improve perceived quality” and reckons 70% of the time he spent with the new Clio was on its interior.

Of the Clio 4, he said: “The hard plastic was in your face. Now what’s soft is close and what’s hard is far away. We’ve benchmarked against our competitors, but we’re reaching towards premium-segment cars”.

Thinner seats have increased rear leg room by 26mm, while the glovebox is bigger and the 330-391-litre boot is claimed to be the best in its class.

“The interior is where the emphasis is,” said van den Acker, “but the difference between today and tomorrow is cars become smart.”

To this end, the Clio will be available with a raft of infotainment and driver assist features but, said van den Acker, they will be easier to use, with items like the temperature controls returning to dashboard buttons.

“The Clio 4 instrument cluster was rich on decoration but not information,” he said. “Designers like the idea of getting rid of buttons because Apple takes buttons away. But in a smartphone, you’re concentrating, and in a car, you’re doing 120km/h.”

The Clio will make its debut with a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine in 65bhp and 75bhp forms, a 1.0-litre turbo with 99bhp and 129bhp and a 1.5-litre diesel with 84bhp and 114bhp.

In 2020, though, it will become Renault’s first hybrid, with an 89bhp petrol engine mated to a 40bhp electric motor and 1.2kWh battery. The brand claims it will drive “like an EV” and be 70% electrically powered in town.

The same drivetrain but with a 9.8kWh battery will make the Captur SUV the first B-segment plug-in hybrid, with an electric-only range of 25 to 30 miles.

Van den Acker continues to see the Clio as the heart of the company’s range. “This is our soul,” he said.

I've always found the exhaust tailpipe of the generation 4 Clio (non-RS and GT Line models) to be...awkward. Its just there, non-covered and stuff. Doesn't look nice. I see they have fixed that now.

It is still early pictures, let's wait and see what they bring to SA, you know how much they strip SA destined cars of nice things because South Africans don't mind paying big bucks for mediocrity.

All-new, SA-bound Renault Clio revealed with more mature look

Just a day after showing us the fifth-generation Clio's cabin, Renault has revealed its exterior and if it’s a revolution on the inside, the redesigned hatch is merely an evolution on the outside.

That comes as little surprise, given that its predecessor’s styling was widely smiled upon by the market.

So Renault has effectively let it mature a bit for the new generation, infusing some elements from the latest Megane, such as C-shaped headlights (now 100 percent LED as standard across the range) and toning down the plastic cladding, while retaining other Clio IV cues such as the hidden rear door handles and pointy taillights.

It goes big on the garnishes too, with the GT Line trim grade making way for a new R.S. Line that gets honeycomb grille treatment, an F1 inspired ‘blade’ and unique 17-inch alloys. New Clio also colours up with two new exterior hues in the form of Valencia Orange and Celadon Blue.

New platform

The new Clio is set to hit South African shores in late 2019 or early 2020 and it's the first Renault to be built on the group’s updated CMF-B platform.

Engines haven’t been confirmed as yet, but it’s practically a given that it will feature the new 1-litre three-cylinder turbopetrol engines that have just been announced for the Nissan Micra that Renault builds in France. The entry 1.0 engine in the Nissan has conventional fuel injection and pushes 74kW and 160Nm, while the more high-tech 1.0 unit with direct injection is good for 86kW and 180Nm. It’s not clear at this stage whether the Clio will be tuned to the same output levels, but it’s unlikely to stray too far. Renault says that hybrid versions will also be offered.

As with the engine specs, Renault is remaining quiet on the actual technologies and driver assistance systems available, although the French company is promising that the Clio will be a “pioneer in this respect” by making “the driver assistance systems leading to autonomous driving widely available on a city car”.

As revealed on Tuesday, the fifth-generation Clio has a much smarter looking cabin, brimming with soft-touch surfaces and decorative touches and featuring a brand new portrait-orientated, 23.6cm touchscreen. This is twice the size of the previous screen and incorporates the latest version of Renault’s EasyLink connected operating system.

The Clio also features a TFT digital instrument cluster for the first time, available in 17.8cm, 23.6cm and 25.4cm sizes.

Numerous interior design schemes are available, along with an eight-colour mood lighting system.

Watch out for more information on the Clio when it makes its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in early March.

Next-gen Renault Clio Revealed

Renault has released images of the all-new 5th-gen Renault Clio. Take a look at what the newcomer will offer when it's officially revealed at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.

What you're looking at here is the cabin and interior of the 5th generation of Renault Clio. Running on the new CMF-B platform alongside the new Captur and some Nissan products, the all-new 5th gen Clio will make its public debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.

The Clio is one of those vehicles which sells in tremendous numbers, especially in continental Europe. It has found favour in South Africa too and many have found homes here too. Since its official launch in 1990, over 15 million units have been sold and it has become Renault's best-selling vehicle globally. Clio 4 was especially well received. Design has always played in a key role in Clio's success and senior vice president of corporate design Laurens van den Acker is hopeful that Clio 5 will replicate the same sales success.

“The fifth generation Clio is very important for us as it is the best-seller in its segment and the second best-selling car in Europe, all categories combined. It is the best Clio yet.”

The all-new Clio forms a massive part of Renault's electrification strategy. By 2022 Renault will offer 12 electrified vehicles in its portfolio. The all-new Clio 5 will be first with its E-Tech hybrid engine. Also in 2022, Renault is aiming to have its entire portfolio 100% connected in key markets. There's also a massive focus on autonomous driving tech and Renault hopes to have 15 cars equipped.

As for this Clio 5 specifically, it's going to represent a big leap forward in terms of perceived quality and ergonomics. Given how much the segment has moved in this regard (think Polo and Fiesta) it's critical that Renault keeps pace. Dominating the Clio 5 dashboard is a Tesla-style vertical-orientated display. It contains multimedia and the car will also feature GPS navigation and a wireless charging pad. From the photos, we can see there will be 2 USB ports too. We can also see an option for both a manual gearbox as well as a version of Renault's Electronic Dual Clutch transmission. Renault is doing away with the GT-Line badging and replacing it with RS-Line. RS-Line cars have sportier cabin trim, bigger alloy wheels and sporty body kits.

Renault is claiming that its new Clio 5 boats the biggest boot in the segment at 391 litres, which is 26 litres more than the Clio 4. Engine details at this point are scarce, but we're expecting to see petrol, diesel and hybrid options, with local engine lineups to be confirmed closer to launch. Renault South Africa says they're looking at bringing the new Clio 5 in either late this year or early 2020.

New Clio cabin ‘dramatically’ improved – Renault design boss

The head of design at Renault says the perceived quality of the new Clio’s cabin has been “dramatically” improved, claiming it is now “reaching towards premium-segment cars”.

Speaking to Autocar after the recent unveiling of the fifth-generation hatchback, Laurens van den Acker revealed some 70 percent of the time he spent working on the new Clio involved its interior.

“The hard plastic was in your face,” Van den Acker said, referring to the outgoing, fourth-generation model.

“Now what’s soft is close and what’s hard is far away. We’ve benchmarked against our competitors, but we’re reaching towards premium-segment cars,” he said.

Van den Acker added that “the difference between today and tomorrow is cars become smart”.

“The Clio 4 instrument cluster was rich on decoration but not information. Designers like the idea of getting rid of buttons because Apple takes buttons away. But in a smartphone, you’re concentrating, and in a car, you’re doing 120km/h,” he quipped.

The revamped cabin features a 9,3-inch multimedia screen, which is the largest ever used in a Renault. It’s vertically positioned and slightly angled towards the driver, and will run the brand’s latest “Easy Link” system.

The traditional analogue display, meanwhile, has been replaced by a customisable digital TFT screen offered in two sizes (seven and 10 inches). The 10-inch version will include navigation in the display.

In the official press material, Van den Acker added “the interior has undergone a true revolution, with a considerable improvement in perceived quality, greater sophistication and technology”.

Talking about the exterior styling of the new Clio, the Dutch designer said it would have not made sense to make drastic changes.

“When I arrived at Renault, it [the Clio] was looking for its soul. This time, we have so much to build on it would be a shame to throw it away,” he told the British publication.
