New Renault Clio and Captur: South African launch timing adjusted

Renault South Africa has confirmed adjusted launch timing for its new Clio and Captur, with the fresh-faced models pushed back to 2021.

While the French firm’s local arm had previously planned to introduce the two new-generation models before the end of 2020, it seems the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed both launches.

As a result, the new Clio is scheduled to arrive in South Africa in the second quarter of 2021, with the new Captur likely to follow in the second half of the year. Before then, though, Renault also plans to launch a new Triber variant employing the company’s automated manual transmission (AMT).

Renault South Africa's managing director Jaco Oosthuizen took some time out of his hectic schedule to chat about what it is like to steer one of South Africa's most popular vehicle brands during one of the most challenging periods in human history. Amidst an ongoing lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, and while dealing with global stock shortages and production hiccups, the Renault boss remains optimistic that better times are coming for the automotive industry and consumers.

2. You've introduced some exciting new models during the lockdown, such as the Kiger; however, many of your new models were delayed. Can you tell us why?

"Renault SA should have launched both the new Clio and Captur models towards the end of 2020. Initially, the delay was due to a pricing issue because of the unfavourable exchange rate, followed by the global semiconductor shortages.

"But I am happy to announce that we will launch the new Clio V in February 2022, followed shortly by Captur in May 2022. New Trafic models will join the local line-up later on in 2022, and there are some model enhancements in the planning phase for both the Kwid and Triber models."

Total registrations dropped by 18% to 855,281 units, but electrified ownership continued to rise

The European car market suffered additional setbacks last month, with the lowest November registration figures over the last 30 years.

Total registrations dropped by 18% year-on-year to 855,281 units, according to Jato Dynamics, which has once again attributed the drop to the continued shortages of semiconductors and new cars.

“Although the market has not recovered entirely from the pandemic, the current problem does not relate to a lack of demand, but rather a lack of supply,” said Felipe Muñoz, global analyst at Jato.

Registration growth is expected to be minimal for the second consecutive year, after a 0.4% rise in 2020. “When you consider the chip shortage in combination with local lockdowns experienced over the course of this year, there is a clear backlog of consumers wishing to renew their cars,” Muñoz said.

“This delay could have two main impacts: the first being that we see a large uptick in registrations next year if the shortage is solved; the second that consumers begin to adapt their buying patterns, moving toward keeping their vehicles for longer periods,” he added.

Electrified vehicle ownership however did continue to grow in November, setting a new monthly record. A total of 181,300 BEV and PHEVs were registered representing a 22.9% total market share.

Ahead of the vehicle’s launch in the 2nd week of February 2022, pricing and specification details of the all-new Renault Clio were posted on the brand’s local website.

From what we can see, customers will have 6 colours to choose from, with one powertrain across the range. The new 1.0-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol engine is paired to a manual gearbox, which drives the front wheels. Outputs of 74 kW and 160 Nm are on offer. Thanks to the online brochure, we can also see the trim levels and features offered.

The new Renault Clio is being launched in South Africa this week and while the fifth-generation model doesn’t look radically different on the outside, it is totally new beneath the skin as it now sits on the updated CMF-B platform.

The new Renault Clio comes in three flavours with the Life trim grade kicking things off at R309 900. The mid-range Zen comes in at R324 900, while the flagship Intens is yours for R349 900, or R364 900 if you want the option pack.

All models are powered by the new-generation 1.0-litre direct injection turbopetrol engine, which produces 74kW and 160Nm. Curiously though, at a time when many motorists are going the auto route, the only gearbox option at launch is a five-speed manual unit.

All models are sold with a five-year/150 000km mechanical warranty and two-year/30 000km service plan.

Really dislike the rear lights. even vw went backwards on their polo facelift with tail lights.

I dunno man. the car is a facelift that softened the details. looks old school korean. build quality way up apparently but other than that meh. pricing seems decent, when you look at polo's lol.
 
No auto version, no sunroof option, very basic active safety tech, still halogens on some versions, only 1 engine option, Pricing looks “okish” though but won’t be enough to upset the volume rivals. Renault product planners in SA should hang their head in shame.

yeah strange. usually renault basic spec has more options than the competition.

Driven: Renault Clio V Intens launch drive in the serene Western Cape

Since Covid-19 and the semiconductor shortage threw the automotive industry on its head, the Renault Clio V is equally as much a victim and has had its local introduction delayed significantly. Originally making global debut in 2019, this model is essentially already in its third year of production. A facelift is therefore expected by 2023 so if having the latest goodies is a priority for your buying decisions and the Renault Clio V is the one for you, maybe hold out until next year.

Overall, Renault hopes to sell 200 units per month in our local market and continue to wrestle for market share from the likes of the Volkswagen Polo, Hyundai i20, Ford Fiesta and Mazda 2. It remains a quality proposition in a competitive market which is filled with high-tech and cheap interiors.

Summary

I expected to return from the Renault Clio 5’s launch feeling a little underwhelmed and with the distinct impression that the French offering was 2 years late to the party, but I was pleasantly surprised by how modern it felt thanks to good in-car tech, a more upmarket interior and a reasonably punchy engine. An auto variant can’t come quickly enough, because commuters will increasingly prefer a self-shifting option, but Renault has a quality offering in the new Clio, which stands out from its overtly budget-oriented Kiger and Kwid siblings. We want to see more of this from the French brand in SA.
