WHAT'S THE VERDICT?
“The Forester is still an extremely loveable, practical SUV... but we just can’t get on board with the e-Boxer powertrain”
The Forester e-Boxer is a tricky one to sum up. The Forester part is still an extremely loveable, practical SUV that has been enhanced with updated safety systems and interior tech. It retains the chunky, reliable feel of the old one and is bigger and thus more practical than it has ever been. It also keeps its off-road abilities without compromising the on-road ride quality.
But we just can’t get on board with the e-Boxer powertrain and its pointless electric range. Couple that with the dated cabin, slightly dozy gearbox and poor economy figures, and there are better, more desirable options available.

The Forester e-Boxer is a tricky one to sum up. The Forester part is still an extremely loveable, practical SUV that has been enhanced with updated safety systems and interior tech. It retains the chunky, reliable feel of the old one and is bigger and thus more practical than it has ever been. It also keeps its off-road abilities without compromising the on-road ride quality.
But we just can’t get on board with the e-Boxer powertrain and its pointless electric range. Couple that with the dated cabin, slightly dozy gearbox and poor economy figures, and there are better, more desirable options available.

Subaru teases something new, and we’re pretty sure it’s the Forester
The Japanese automaker is planning to debut… something at the Los Angeles auto show
Subaru released a tightly cropped teaser image this week signaling the debut of a new car. And while the company won’t come right out and say it, we’ll bet you a billion dollars it’s the new Forester SUV. Just trust us on this one.
The Forester is one of the oldest models in the company’s lineup, though it did receive a small refresh a couple of years ago. We don’t expect the new model to shake up the SUV’s formula drastically, but look for a new overall design and better interior trimmings. The wheel shown in this teaser photo sure looks nice, too.
Subaru will more than likely continue to offer the Forseter with its 2.5-liter naturally aspirated flat-4 engine, as well as standard all-wheel drive. Sure, there’s a chance Subaru could put the 2.4-liter turbo flat-4 from the Ascent, Legacy, and Outback into the Forester, but considering the company discontinued the turbocharged Forester XT years ago due to super-slow sales, we won’t be holding out for its return.

The sixth-generation SUV offers the most advanced features, modern design, and improved ride comfort in its history. The 2025 Forester comes standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Subaru's award-winning EyeSight Driver Assist Technology and makes available a tablet-style 11.6-inch SUBARU STARLINK® Multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto. The Forester has been one of the bestselling Subaru vehicles for nearly 30 years, with more than 2.6 million vehicles sold in the U.S. alone.
The 2025 Forester will be available in Base, Premium, Sport, Limited and Touring trim levels when it arrives in Subaru retailers nationwide in spring 2024.
All-New Exterior and Interior Design
The 2025 Subaru Forester has an all-new, sleek, contemporary design aesthetic while retaining the trademark looks of its classic, rugged predecessors. The front of the vehicle features a bold grille that merges into the compact LED headlights and creates an integrated shield effect. The all-new fascia also debuts the updated Subaru star cluster emblem. The SUV's bold shoulder lines emphasize height and strength, while its prominent wheel arches highlight its off-road capability. Front, side, and rear underguards are standard with color finish according to trim level. The steep rear glass offers increased cargo capacity.
Several functional aerodynamic improvements enhance the SUV's performance and stability. An air outlet at the trailing edge of the front wheel opening allows air to exit from the wheel well more freely, contributing to reduced lift on the front tires and improved driving stability.

New Subaru Forester revealed (but SA will have to wait)
The 6th-gen Subaru Forester has been revealed, billed as an “all-new” model but carrying over several components. South African buyers face a bit of a wait, though…
The new Subaru Forester has been unveiled at the 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show. Though the Japanese automaker describes the 6th-generation version of its SUV as “all-new”, it appears to ride on a modestly updated platform, while also retaining the outgoing model’s powertrain.
So, when will we see this latest Forester on Mzansi roads? Well, Subaru Southern Africa has confirmed to Cars.co.za that it plans to launch the new model “as soon as it becomes available for our market”, though adds the “approximate timing” of such a launch would likely fall only in the 1st quarter of 2025.
What can we expect when it does eventually arrive? Although all details revealed thus far pertain to the North American market, we do know the new Forester benefits from an exterior redesign, complete with a revised grille that merges into the LED headlamps. Round back, the updated taillamps are now connected by a trim strip, while the rear screen is steeper than before (ostensibly freeing up a little more cargo space).
The new Forester again rides on the Subaru Global Platform, though the Shibuya-based firm says these underpinnings have been “enhanced with 10% stiffer torsional rigidity”. The company claims an inner-frame construction with “stronger welding” and “additional structural adhesive” contribute to greater body rigidity. The Forester also adopts a version of the WRX’s dual-pinion electronic power steering rack, which Subaru says provides a “more direct and natural steering feel” and “greater responsiveness”.

Neat and purposeful but perhaps a little generic the styling is a bit, well…Wisteria Lane perhaps, designed to blend in with white picket fences and all the other suburban middle class illusions of civility.
But apart from that odd bug-eyed Impreza experiment of the early noughties, Subaru has always played it safe in the design department and that approach will no doubt prove to be a winning recipe once again in the new model.
The new Forester is 30mm longer and 13mm wider than the current model, while riding on the same 2,669mm wheelbase, and structurally speaking Subaru claims to have improved torsional rigidity by 10%.
Subaru’s highly capable Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system is standard - and that pretty much goes without saying - but the latest version fitted to the Forester has undergone some improvements to make it more responsive than before. Top models also receive an X-Mode with Hill Descent Control to enhance grip on slippery surfaces.
