Subaru Forester gets a fresh face for 2022, here’s how much it costs

Subaru Southern Africa’s most popular SUV, the Subaru Forester, has received a mid-life update, further heightening its appeal. The MY2022 Forester will be the product to inaugurate Subaru Southern Africa’s 30th year in South Africa, available in local dealers from January 2022, starting at R486 000.

The 2022 Subaru Forester will be offered in four derivatives, including 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre petrol variants in their respective Sport and Premium trims and specifications.

The new Subaru Forester is the all-season, all-weather SUV. Local introduction of the new Forester is scheduled for January 2022.

The new Subaru Forester is sold with a 3yr/75 000km full Maintenance Plan as well as 5yr/150 000km Warranty. These are extendable, with various plans available to Subaru customers.

2022 Subaru Forester e-Boxer gains improved tech and safety

Model gets a redesigned front end, gesture control and new safety systems

Subaru has revealed specification details for the refreshed Forester e-Boxer for 2022, with a series of technical and safety updates.

Key highlights include an updated front end, with changes to the grille, headlights and foglight covers, and a new gesture control function for drivers to change the temperature of their car through hand movements.

Three specification levels make up the Subaru e-Boxer range: L Eyesight, Sport Eyesight and range-topping S Eyesight.

Entry-level L Eyesight models are equipped with automatic LED headlights, 17in wheels, a leather steering wheel, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control and an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment display with a rear-view camera and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Sport Eyesight adds 10-spoke 18in wheels, privacy glass, a powersliding glass sunroof, orange stitching and underguard accents, electric sports seats, sat-nav, keyless entry and a side-view monitor.

S Eyesight cars benefit from five-spoke 18in wheels, silver-plated front and rear underguards, rear heated seats and an optional premium Harman Kardon sound system.

The Subaru Forester 2.5i-S ES is priced at R649 000 (February 2022) and comes backed with a 5-year/150 000 km warranty and 3-year/75 000 km maintenance plan. Service intervals are scheduled for every 12 months/15 000 km.

Verdict

Priced at R649 000, the flagship Subaru Forester offers a comparable standard specification to the 2.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol-powered AWD offerings from Mazda and Toyota, but undercuts them on price… and not only by a few thousand Rand. That fact, allied with the Forester’s all-round ability, should see the 2.5i-S ES feature on more buyers’ shortlists. Simply put, this is a quality product that deserves to sell in bigger numbers than it has. And, if your lifestyle includes regular adventures off the beaten track, it jumps to the front of the queue. In summary, then, the updated Forester still won’t win you over with a flashy appearance and the drivetrain may be a little a ho-hum, but if genuine all-road usability, ruggedness, practicality and quality are non-negotiables, then you simply have to consider it strongly.

REVIEW | Subaru's Forester Sport changes direction like Spider-Man, but it's missing a turbo punch

- Subaru's new Forester boasts plenty of grip and good handling, but where has the punch gone?
- The SUV is packed with features that make it a worthwhile family car.
- The Forester is solid if you spend lots of time driving on loose or wet surfaces.

Is it worth buying?

There's undoubtedly something very old-school and charming about the way the Forester Sport drives in that it offers that sure-footed handling, reasonable body control and solid engineering. Seriously, nothing rattled or squeaked, and this car had some mileage on it already. Yes, it took a couple of drives to get used to the CVT, but once you've acclimatised to the way it works, you'll enjoy its smoothness.

The 4x4 drivetrain is also such a boon, particularly in slippery conditions.

At R599 000, this is not a cheap car, but it is competitive considering some of its rivals (Toyota Rav4, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5). If you want something that will last you well beyond the time it's paid up, it makes sense as there's no high-stress turbo system to worry about, but just remember it can get thirsty. You will enjoy its spacious cabin, its comfy seats, the commanding view of the road from the interior and the vibe you get as it's just so well put together and solid-feeling in the hands.

The Forester comes with a five-year or 150 000km mechanical warranty and a three-year or 75 000km maintenance plan.
