Subaru of America, Inc. announced pricing on the 2022 Forester compact SUV, it's most popular model. For 2022, the Forester introduces the rugged Forester Wilderness™: the newest model in the Wilderness family. The fifth-generation Forester also receives a redesigned front fascia along with new safety and convenience features.

The 2022 Forester will be offered in six trim levels when it arrives at Subaru retailers in October 2021: Base, Premium, Sport, all-new Wilderness, Limited, and Touring.

For 2022, Forester is the latest model to join the adventure-ready Wilderness family. The new rugged trim level combines Subaru's renowned Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with a specially revised drivetrain, standard X-MODE, elevated 9.2-inch ground clearance, and exclusive wheels with all-terrain tires. The Subaru Forester Wilderness also offers unique and functional exterior and interior appointments.

The entire 2022 Forester lineup receives a bolder new look with a redesigned front fascia, grille, headlights and fog light covers, with each change element varying to match the character of each trim level.

There are even different construction methods. Subaru CVT uses a LUK metal chain.
Nissan CVT uses a belt.

Not to mention the Shift logic being vastly different.
I find the Honda Jazz with a CVT not too bad for example.

Subarus second best selling model gets a refresh for the new model year

Fans of the Subaru Forester have something to look forward to for 2022. The brand has given the model a refresh with the big news being the addition of a Wilderness trim to the lineup.

The refresh is subtle. The Forester’s entire front facia including the grill and headlights get reworked. Its roof rails have been redesigned and all trims come standard with Subaru’s driver-assistance suite of tech called EyeSight. One interesting thing to note about EyeSight on the Wilderness trim is its calibration. Our own Adam Ismail got up close and personal with the Forester Wilderness at a Subaru event recently and was told that Subaru owners had been lifting their own vehicles, which messed with the vision angle of EyeSight. EyeSight on the Wilderness has been calibrated to adjust for it’s lift so there won’t be any issues.

All models continue to be powered by the naturally aspirated 2.5-liter boxer engine with 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. That engine gets paired to the brand’s Lineartronic CVT which may or may not be a good thing. And it wouldn’t be a Subaru without standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

The Subaru Forester Wilderness has been unveiled for drivers that are looking to travel a bit further into adventurous parts. The new package adds a number of adventure-ready pieces of equipment both inside and out.

As standard, the Subaru Forester Wilderness gains Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with a specially revised drivetrain, standard X-Mode, an elevated 234 mm ground clearance and exclusive wheels with all-terrain tyres. The Forester Wilderness also offers unique and functional exterior and interior design cues.

The Subaru Forester Wilderness also boasts a new ladder-type roof rail design. The improved rail system offers a higher dynamic load capacity of just under 100 kg and a 363 kg static load limit, allowing safe use of a roof-top tent. Helpful tie-down locations have also been integrated into the rails. Inside, two additional utility hooks have been added to the roof of the rear cargo area and a brighter LED interior dome lamp with off-delay is now standard.

Subaru's latest Wilderness trim is a daily driver that'll take you nearly anywhere.

Verdict

The 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness is a car that looks like it shouldn’t be as good off-road as it is. You don’t get locking differentials, and the approach, departure and breakover angles make you think that it’ll scrape on everything. And it has a CVT, which doesn’t have the best reputation for off-road prowess. Despite all that, it’ll take you just about anywhere you want to go, even a snowy mountain with rough, slushy, rocky trails. It’s a vehicle that actually lives up to its name.

That makes it the perfect daily driver for someone who isn’t an off-road enthusiast but wants a vehicle that can allow them to blaze trails not found on a GPS.

The 2022 Subaru Wilderness starts at $32,820 before a $1,125 destination and delivery charge. Subaru sees its competitors as the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk and Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road, with others being the likes of the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5. Its closest competition is seen to be the Cherokee Trailhawk, which starts at $36,745 but comes with more off-road capability, including far better angles and a rear locker.

I left the Forester Wilderness in Oregon wanting to play with it some more. It puts a smile on your face as you take it through terrain that you would not expect it to handle with the grace it does. And that only causes you to root for it more the deeper you take it.

Wife's uncle just bough the top spec model in some moss green colour. Very nice looking car.
If I had the R700k available, this would be high on my list.

What’s on offer?

Subaru will be offering its 2022 Forester in a 4-model lineup. There are two engines on offer; 2.0 and a 2.5. Both engines are naturally-aspirated and are horizontally opposed in layout.

The 2.0-litre produces 115 kW and 196 Nm, while the 2.5-litre offers up 136 kW and 239 Nm. All Subaru Foresters feature CVTs and all-wheel drive.
