I can't help but feel a little bit jealous. Got a low mileage 2.0iS-ES towards the end of last year. Now I love it and have already been on many adventures. It has enough power, but coming from a Merc B250, the extra power would have been nice to have.

I think you also get the lane centering and not just the warning, as well as the driver recognition cameras, right? Anyway... Enjoy. Your going to love it.
 
Pricing! Reshuffled Subaru Forester range officially gains 2,5 engine

Subaru Southern Africa has released pricing for its reshuffled Forester range, which gains the option of a new 2,5-litre boxer engine.

As the Japanese company’s local division announced back in January 2021, two new 2,5-litre derivatives have been added to the line-up, though it looks as though the mid-spec 2,0i-L ES has fallen away.

So, how much are you looking at here? Well, thanks to our studious colleagues over at duoporta.com, we now know the carried-over Forester 2,0i will start at R486 000, with the Forester 2,0i-S ES kicking off from R564 000.

The new Forester 2,5i-Sport ES, meanwhile, will be priced from R599 000, while the 2,5i-S ES will start at R629 000.

Subaru SA’s new Forester 2,5 flagship models: full specs released

Subaru Southern Africa has released full specification details of the two new 2,5-litre flagship derivatives added to its Forester range.

While we recently revealed pricing for the adjusted line-up – which gains the two aforementioned boxer variants but loses the 2,0i-L ES derivative for a total of four – more details have now been released.

As a reminder, the new 2,5-litre flat-four engine delivers 136 kW and 239 N.m (compared with the 2,0-litre powerplant’s 115 kW and 196 N.m) to all four wheels via the Japanese firm’s “Lineartronic” continuously variable transmission.

With Sport mode dialled in, the Forester 2,5 will sprint from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 9,3 seconds. Claimed fuel consumption comes in at 7,6 L/100 km, with a corresponding CO2 emissions figure of 193 g/km.

The new Forester 2,5i-Sport model is offered in five colour combinations, each featuring distinctive orange and black exterior trim elements. The grille and bumper trim, for instance, are finished in black, as are the side sills, wheel-arch surrounds and top section of the boot lid. In addition, the Sport variant gains orange accents along its flanks as well as on the corners of the roof rails.

This top-spec Subaru Forester 2.5i-S ES is priced from R629 000 and is sold with a 5-year/150 000 km warranty and a 3-year/75 000 km maintenance plan.

Verdict

There is much to like about this more powerful Forester! Its open-road performance surprised us; the increased power and torque made a noticeable difference in terms of performance, but the 2.5-litre motor also returned admirable fuel consumption figures. The Forester’s fuss-free and comfortable on-road demeanour adds to its strengths, as does its off-road ability, which is a USP in this segment.

The Forester will appeal to adventure-loving family car buyers (in particular) and if you prioritise practicality, the Forester is difficult to fault – it’s definitely worth adding to your potential family-car shortlist. It's also worth noting that this Forester is also competitively priced against its equivalent naturally-aspirated rivals such as the Toyota RAV4 2.5 AWD VX and Mazda CX-5 2.5 AWD Individual.

It’s a travesty that the Forester is often overlooked in this segment. Yes, there may be more "stylish" or "fashion-forward" products on offer in the family-car market, but the Forester’s solid packaging and enviable track record for reliability should not be scoffed at.

If your budget can stretch to R630k, the Forester 2.5i-S ES is palpably easy to recommend. Experience has shown that you'll probably want another one after this model has served its purpose...

Subaru Is Spinning Off A Sub-Brand For The Outback And Forester

Subaru wants in on the sweet, sweet profit margins that upgraded models of current production cars bring, so it’s going ahead with the strategy by forming a new sub-brand for the Outback and Forester.

The Japanese carmaker is no longer oblivious to the upsell. It will launch a sub-brand called Wilderness, per Automotive News. The report calls it an off-road sub-brand, which is kind of like when Dodge Ram pickups spun off into their own brand. Or even something like VW’s Chinese brand Jetta.

The new Subaru models, which are set to launch along with the 2022 Outback, will sport off-road upgrades like higher ground clearance and off-road tires straight from the dealer.

But it’s not exactly clear whether this is going to be a distinct brand or if it’s an edition of the Outback and Forester that will sit atop the trim levels. If it is set to be a whole brand, I think they could have come up with something better than Wilderness. Maybe something with a space theme, or something space adjacent, since Subaru is known for its Pleiades badge.

Sure, Wilderness is in line with the theme Subaru is going for, but the two nameplates already have that covered. And it’s a going to feel a little strange referring to a souped-up Subie as a Wilderness Forester or Wilderness Outback. Or if it’s just a trim, then maybe Wilderness will be tacked on at the end, like a Wrangler Rubicon.

They are the Forester's rivals but do they really rival it? And left-field? Only in SA!

Toyota Rav4 2.5 AWD - R15000 more
Mazda CX-5 2.5 AWD - R15000 more
Nissan X-Trail - being replaced very shortly (lookup the 2021 Nissan Rogue in the US)
VW Tiguan - Price is not even mentioned, cos that would not suit the narrative
 
Can anyone confirm if the 2.5 forester has an alarm system? Insurance is asking. I may be taking delivery of one next week.
