2020 Audi RS6 Avant (C8)

Audi RS6 Avant 2019 review

Should I buy one?

But then, it’s not really supposed to be. The RS6 is a car that impresses you rather than excites you and its key calling card is its sheer breadth of abilities, not just performance ones. Remember, this is a vast estate car that weighs more than two tonnes but has mighty yet undramatic straight-line and point-to-point pace, as well as space for all your stuff and brilliant, relaxed road manners for the 95% of drives when you just want to blend in and get where you’re going.

Its direct rivals – the likes of the BMW M5, Mercedes-AMG E63 Estate and Porsche Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo – all feel more engaging and have greater driver appeal, yet the RS6 feels more usable for more of the time and, as such, arguably makes for the more compelling ownership proposition. Which, you can imagine, is a position Audi would probably take not only for the RS6 but also for all the new era of Audi Sport models to follow.

ABT Already Tease Upcoming Audi RS6-R

ABT Sportsline is not wasting any time on the new Audi RS6 as they took to social media to share the first design sketches of the upcoming RS6-R.

It is rumoured to pack as much as 750 hp (560 kW) and as expected will look a lot more aggressive with an updated body kit.

Official: TG's Family Car of the Year, the Audi RS6, will dance

No drift mode, but the big V8 twin-turbo wagon can still do silly, entertaining skids

There you go. Proof, just in case you weren’t sure, that the new, twin-turbo V8 Audi RS6 will do silly, childish, but thoroughly entertaining skids. We did them, over in California, as part of our shiny new Top Gear Awards issue of the magazine.

Because the Audi RS6 is Top Gear’s Family Car of the Year. Yep, a family car that’ll happily sprint off into the distance and warp its way into the outer realms, but also house surf and ski boards. And the odd dog.

Inspired by RS2! Audi celebrates 25 years of RS with special packs

Audi has revealed a raft of special anniversary packages (each doffing its cap to the RS2 Avant) to celebrate 25 years of the RS badge.

Back in 1994, of course, the RS2 Avant arrived as the first high-performance station wagon from Ingolstadt. And now Audi Sport has released a special equipment package (wordily dubbed the "Anniversary Package 25 Years of RS") for the TT RS, RS4 Avant, RS5 Coupé, RS5 Sportback, RS6 Avant and RS7 Sportback.

“All our RS models are strong characters. The RS2 Avant from 1994 already represented our philosophy of a strong performance, individuality and full everyday usability. This is basis of our success story,” said Oliver Hoffmann, managing director of Audi Sport.

“For our anniversary package, we placed the focus on individuality. The exterior and interior make reference to our first RS model, the RS2 Avant.”

Interestingly, the RS models that are now offered with the anniversary package can be specified in the RS2 Avant’s pearl-effect Nogaro Blue paint colour upon request. Mythos Black, Nardo Grey and Glacier White hues are also available.

Audi has created an RS package inspired by the iconic RS 2

It’s been 25 years since Audi unleashed its first RS vehicle, the RS 2, and this manic wagon, developed in collaboration with Porsche, is still regarded as the most iconic of them all.

Any excuse to celebrate its heritage would have done just fine, but Audi has decided to mark the RS 2’s silver anniversary with a unique equipment package for most of the current RS models, these being the RS 4 Avant, RS 5 Coupe and Sportback, TT RS Coupe, RS 6 Avant and RS 7 Sportback.

The coolest thing about this package is that a recreation of the RS 2’s pearl effect ‘Nogaro Blue’ exterior paint hue is being offered for these new editions on special request. Sure, Mythos Black, Nardo Grey and Glacier White are also available, but forget those, you really want to make that special request…

The anniversary pack models also receive a combination of gloss black and matt aluminium exterior trims as well as an RS anniversary logo in the wheel centres, and this badge is also projected onto the ground when the doors are opened.

Meh, I guess I am the only one who is not impressed by this car.

The M5 appeals to me.

MTM Cranks New Audi RS 6 Avant To 787 HP (587 KW)

Audi’s new RS 6 Avant is an absolute rocket in stock form but the enthusiasts at MTM claim to have unleashed significantly more power from just a basic tune.

The tuner posted on Instagram that they have managed to get an extra 196 hp (146 kW) from the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 to bring output to 787 horsepower (587 kW), plus an extra 230 Nm all from simple software updates. That’s right, the engine and exhaust, everything is otherwise stock. It showed images of the wagon atop a dyno, plus the computer graph ostensibly backing up the test results (see below).

775 HP (578 KW) Audi RS 6 Avant Is Blisteringly Fast

Last week we mentioned that tuner MTM had given the new Audi RS 6 Avant and now a tuner known as HGP has delivered the same sort of power output with a video to show us all how rapid the family-hauler can be.

From what we understand, this has been achieved through software and a better intake system alone.

So, does it make the twin-turbo V8 wagon faster? As you will see in the video below, the simple answer is yes.

The HGP RS 6 makes quick work of the usual sprints and smashes the 100 km/h sprint in 3.1 seconds and goes from 100 km/h to 200 km/h in just 6.8 seconds.

New Audi RS6 Avant’s twin-turbo V8 boosted to a whopping 515 kW!

Well, that didn’t take long. The folks over at ABT Sportsline have released a tuning package for Audi’s new RS6 Avant, boosting the already wicked wagon's peak power output to a whopping 515 kW.

In standard form, Ingolstadt's super-estate employs a twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 petrol engine (complete with mild-hybrid system) churning out 441 kW and 880 N.m, which is delivered to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

ABT amps up Audi's RS6 to 515kW, 880Nm

It’s only been a few months since Audi unleashed its latest RS6 Avant, packing more muscle than ever, and thus it hasn’t taken long for German tuner ABT Sportsline to do what it does best.

Enter the ABT Power Performance Upgrade, which gives the RS6 a very useful power hike from the standard model’s 441kW maximum output to 515kW, while peak torque rises from 800Nm to 880Nm. This, according to ABT, makes the manic wagon 0.3 seconds quicker off the mark, with 0-100km/h now taking 3.3 seconds.

As far as we can tell the increased outputs are due to software changes only, with the tuner having installed its ABT Engine Control (AEC) system. ABT also claims to have implemented a “whole host of engine protection measures”, although it didn’t go into detail on these. It does however, offer comprehensive guarantees and TÜV certification in Germany.

For the record, the new-generation RS6 is powered by a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine that’s paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid electrical system. This set-up can recover up to 12kW of power during light deceleration, which is then stored in a separate lithium ion battery.
