New Ford Kuga SUV to be revealed next week

Third-generation Kuga will be unveiled on Tuesday; it will be a vital part of Ford's revised European product plan

Ford will pull the wraps off its third-generation Kuga next week ahead of the family SUV's launch towards the end of this year.

Teased in video on Ford's Facebook page ahead of the official event on 2 April, the new Kuga will adopt styling influence from the recently launched Focus and is set to feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain option.

While it's not officially confirmed, sources suggest that a new Fiesta-based crossover will also be unveiled alongside the Kuga next week. Both models, along with the Ecosport, Edge and Explorer SUVs, will play a crucial part in Ford's wide-reaching European restructureformally announced in January.

A more targeted focus on more profitable SUVs, the main growth sector in Europe, is listed as a priority. Ford sold 151,000 Kugas in 2017 across Europe and slightly fewer in 2018 – both years more than double the volume shifted in 2013, when the second-generation car was launched.

New Ford Kuga revealed with fresh design and hybrid option

Total redesign of Ford’s SUV for 2020 adds more space, more tech, a Focus-inspired look and cleaner engine options

The Ford Kuga has been redesigned from the ground up in a bid to attract more buyers in the still-booming family SUV sector, and the new model will be offered with plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid powertrains, along with conventional petrol and diesel offerings.

As the firm ramps up its European business restructuring SUVs such as the Kuga will play a crucial role. "1 in 3 sales across Europe are SUVs, and for us it's 1 in 5 - we want to change that." Jorg Beyer, managing director of product development, told Autocar.

The hybrid line-up in particular is expected to be key to attracting new customers, with interest in electrified powertrains escalating exponentially. The new Kuga won’t go on sale in the UK until early next year, but Ford should still beat many of its rivals to market with its plug-in option, which mates a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and 10.3kWh battery pack to deliver 222bhp. The model can travel up to 34 miles on electric range alone, giving it an official economy figure of 235.4mpg, with CO2 emissions of 29g/km.

Buyers will also be able to choose a self-charging hybrid set-up, akin to the Prius’s hybrid system, which links the 2.5-litre petrol engine to an electric motor and smaller battery to deliver 50.4mpg and 130g/km. A 48V mild-hybrid set-up is mated to a 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel option to offer 56.5mpg and 132g/km. Conventional 1.5-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel variants will also be available, mated to either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox. Two and all-wheel drive options will be available.

Also striking is the new, more sophisticated and less boxy look of the third-generation Nissan Qashqai, Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson rival. The styling moves Ford’s design language another step on from the more contoured lines of the latest Fiesta and Focus. The interior also follows those cars, delivering an uncluttered, sweeping look despite the raft of technological functions that are offered, the majority of which are controlled through the central touchscreen

All-new Ford Kuga: third-generation model revealed

Ford has taken the wraps off its new, third-generation Kuga, billing the crossover as the Blue Oval brand’s “most electrified vehicle ever”.

The fresh-faced Kuga runs on Ford’s new global C2 architecture that it says has helped cut weight by up to 90 kg. Inside, Ford has added items such as wireless charging, a new eight‑inch touchscreen system (running Sync 3) and a 12,3-inch LCD instrument cluster.

The crossover measures 44 mm wider and 89 mm longer than the outgoing model, while the wheelbase has been increased by 20 mm.

The Kuga line-up (in Europe, at least) will include a plug-in hybrid, a mild-hybrid and a full-hybrid, alongside Ford’s 1.5‑ and 2,0-litre EcoBlue turbodiesels, and the 1,5‑litre EcoBoost petrol engine. A new eight-speed automatic transmission has also been added.

The plug-in hybrid model features a 2,5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine as well as an electric motor and generator, along with a 14,4 kWh lithium-ion. The mild-hybrid, meanwhile, employs a 2,0‑litre turbodiesel and a 48-volt air-cooled battery pack.

I guess the 1.5 Ecoboost wont be coming here, if the ST with the same engine is not.

New Ford Kuga Revealed

The new Kuga will initially go on sale with a turbocharged 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine with cylinder deactivation offering 134 kW and 240 Nm of torque. A turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine with 186 kW and 373 Nm will also be offered and both engines are mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard. The Kuga will also be available in both front and all-wheel drive configurations.

In addition, a Kuga hybrid with a 2.5-litre Atkinson cycle powertrain with 148 kW as well as a 156 kW plug-in hybrid powertrain will follow in 2020.

We reached out to Ford South Africa to find out when the new Kuga will arrive in South Africa and its arrival has yet to be confirmed at this stage. We will keep you updated as soon as more information becomes available.

Ford Escape

With the reveal of the stylish new Ford Escape, featuring the small SUV's best-ever performance, flexibility and smart new technology, Ford is reinventing the model that helped drive the popularity of the segment.

Escape, which debuted the world's first hybrid SUV in 2005, brings back two hybrid choices for 2020, a standard hybrid and a plug-in variant, and introduces technologies ranging from drive modes and driver-assist features to electric vehicle ingenuity and on-board connectivity.

"This all-new Escape brings a sleeker, sportier design with the capability to take you on just about any of your life's adventures," said Kumar Galhotra, Ford's president, North America. "With our class-leading hybrid powertrains, customers will spend less time at the gas station and more time on the road."

To create a sportier look for the all-new Ford Escape, designers turned to some of the most high-profile sports cars in the Ford showroom. The shield-shaped trapezoidal grille is inspired by the sixth-generation Mustang, while the lower front end borrows from Ford GT. Compared to the current model, the all-new Escape stands lower, wider and longer.

With a sloped roofline, optimized liftgate spoiler and strake, and efficient underbody, the all-new Ford Escape is the most aerodynamic to date. Meanwhile, it sheds more than 200 pounds from the current model, due in part to the extensive use of high-strength, lightweight steel.

Every model in the lineup, whether powered by one of two EcoBoost engines or the all-new hybrid powertrains, targets an EPA-estimated range of at least 400 miles per tank. The standard hybrid with front-wheel drive targets best-in-class EPA-estimated range of more than 550 miles.

Ford's Kuga SUV gets a complete redesign

Ford pulled the covers off its third-generation Kuga, redesigned from the ground up on the company’s C2 architecture that also underpins the new Focus.

Interestingly Ford has chosen a sleeker, more car-like design language for its new SUV that takes much inspiration from that aforementioned Focus, and it also sits 20mm lower to the ground.

The new architecture improves torsional stiffness by 10 percent, and despite being 89mm longer and 44mm wider than its predecessor, with an extra 20mm going into the wheelbase, the new Kuga is actually up to 90kg lighter.

Not only is it more spacious, but Ford has improved versatility too, thanks to a sliding rear seat that can vary the ratio between legroom and boot space.

Ford has packed a whole lot more technology into the new Kuga, including an embedded modem that turns the SUV into a mobile WiFi hotspot with connectivity for up to 10 devices.

The command system is a 20.3cm Sync 3 touchscreen that towers above the dashboard, and the new Kuga is also available with a digital instrument cluster for the first time, as well as head-up display and wireless phone charging.

Wouldn't go near it with a braai tong ! I wonder if Kuga will ever recover their name

Nice. Why such a big lip at the back?

coz that's how they make money afterwards.
can you imagine how many of these are going to be replaced under insurance claims after been in an accident?
Same goes for the front.

Back in the day men were men and straightened things and physically did work. Nowadays all the mechanic does is unscrew the old one, throw it in the bin and put a new one on. That'll be R15 000 please, have a nice day :)

If you had to morph/merge a Tiguan, Sportage and CX5 this is exactly what it would like. It's like they've done exactly that.
