New Ford Kuga: designers explain 'less aggressive' look
Ford says the new, third-generation Ford Kuga features “less aggressive” styling than its forebear, with the Blue Oval brand claiming customers no longer want a “get-out-of-my-way” look.
Speaking to Automotive News Europe after the reveal of the new crossover in Amsterdam, Amko Leenarts, Ford of Europe's head of design, said "the SUV is evolving into something that's much more honest, friendlier".
"We did not want to go for the warrior, get-out-of-my-way look. The customer didn't want that," Leenarts told the publication.
Ford’s global design director, Joel Piaskowski, meanwhile, separately told Car and Driver the automaker had purposely repositioned the sleeker, more hatchback-like Kuga – or Escape, as it is known in markets such as the United States – to fill the gap left by discontinued passenger vehicles (such as the Focus) in North America.

New Ford Kuga ST rendered … and it may well happen
Ford has affixed its ST badge to the rump of a couple of crossovers over the past little while, leading to speculation the Blue Oval brand could build a Kuga ST based on the recently revealed third-generation model. And the first render of this rumoured hot crossover has just hit the web.
Yes, X-Tomi Design has published his take on what a Kuga ST would look like, handing the new model bigger alloy wheels, red brake callipers, a lowered suspension and a few subtle body tweaks.
Of course, like the outgoing model, the new Kuga will be offered in ST-Line guise, adding chunkier side skirts, a model-specific grille, a new front skid plate, a larger rear spoiler, twin tailpipes and various ST-Line bits inside. So much of the styling is already there.
What are the chances of Ford actually putting a Kuga ST into production? Fairly good, if you ask us, considering the Dearborn-based brand already offers the Edge ST and Explorer ST in North America.

Wait, what? Crazy Ford Kuga Raptor off-roader rendered
Think the new Ford Kuga range could do with a crazy off-road variant? Well, X-Tomi Design (who also recently imagined an ST variant) has rendered just that, giving the mid-size crossover the virtual Raptor treatment.
Based on the recently revealed third-generation Kuga, the rendered model gains all manner of bits and bobs from the Raptor versions of the F-150 and Ranger bakkies. Yes, X-Tomi Design has added a suspension lift kit, fat off-road tyres (wrapped round new alloys), black exterior cladding, fender vents, underbody protection and the obligatory decals.
So, what would Ford drop into the engine bay were it to actually build such a thing? Well, the Ranger Raptor uses a new 2,0-litre twin-turbo diesel unit (worth 157 kW and 500 N.m), although it’s doubtful the new Kuga’s underpinnings were developed to accommodate such an engine. The Blue Oval brand’s 2,3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine (which offers a healthy 206 kW and 420 N.m in the latest Focus ST hot hatch) seems a better fit.

Ford has released UK-specific pricing and trim level details for the new, third-generation Kuga SUV. It's priced from £23,995, with priority deliveries of the high-spec First Edition models early next year.
The base price gets you in a Zetec model powered by a 118bhp 1.5-litre Ecoboost petrol motor. Further trims include Titanium (from £27,245), ST-Line (from £29,345), ST-Line X (from £30,645) and flagship Vignale (from £31,945).

Should I buy one?
The Kuga has lost none of its dynamic flair, yet it’s more refined and practical than ever. It’s comfortable, too, Ford’s suspension engineers creating a ride that’s plusher and quieter than most. Perhaps the only real niggle is that the interior fails to achieve that premium feel Ford has been striving for. We also suspect the cheaper petrols will be the pick of the line-up.
But slightly lacklustre straight-line pace and grabby brakes aside, the Kuga PHEV makes a strong case against its less entertaining rivals from Vauxhall, Peugeot and Mitsubishi.

3rd Gen Kuga has been announced for close to a year not out for a year. A new gen vehicle will normally start shipping a few (short) months after being announced.
North American markets got it 1st, badged as the Escape there.
The UK, a RHD market, just got the new Kuga. So in theory it should not be too long before it hits SA, Rona delays notwithstanding.
The local motoring articles (it was an announcement for South Africa) with the 3rd generation specs were dated 2 and 3 April 2019, which is why today (13 April) I said it was just over a year ago. I am aware of the timing of the UK launch, thank you Google. UK pricing was released 2 December. But none of that excuses the apparent reticence of SA dealers and Ford SA. Emails to both those have literally been ignored. And from a stated happy Kuga diesel owner, who would like to replace his 2013 model. Surely there is a marketing plan? Which seemingly included that publicity at the beginning of April last year.

Ford has halted sales of its new Kuga PHEV, due to concerns over overheating battery packs, the company has confirmed.
The plug-in hybrid SUV arrived in showrooms only a couple of months ago but has been deemed a success so far, accounting for half of the Kugas registered across Europe in the second quarter of this year.
