Range of premium saloons and SUVs set to include Audi Q7-rivalling GV80, G80 the BMW 5 Series cohort

Genesis will arrive in the UK this summer, with the electric version of its new G80 saloon leading an ambitious launch plan that will include a dedicated European model and two further EVs within a year.

Hyundai launched its premium brand in Korea and the US in 2015, and its European expansion will now begin with sales in the UK, Germany and Switzerland.

The G80 large saloon and GV80 large SUV will arrive here in June, with the Electrified G80 (which is being offered elsewhere with a dual-motor 365bhp powertrain) the first model due to reach customers.

Genesis hasn’t detailed which powertrains will be offered in the UK yet, but it has said that the models have been tuned specifically for European roads.

The decision to launch Genesis’s largest cars first is likely an effort establish the brand’s premium credentials and reflects the fact they’re the newest in its fleet, having been revealed last year.

The G80 and GV80 will be followed “soon after” by the smaller G70 junior saloon and GV70 mid-sized SUV, and Genesis has promised that “a dedicated European product” will arrive within a year.

Ahead of its European market launch in the coming months, Hyundai's new luxury brand Genesis has priced up the first cars it will launch in the region: the G80 saloon and its GV80 SUV sibling.

Priced from £37,460 and £56,715 respectively, the G80 and GV80 will arrive in UK dealerships in summer, ahead of the arrival of the G70, GV70 and Europe-specific G70 Shooting Brake.

The G80 is initially available with either a 199bhp 2.2-litre diesel driving the rear axle, or a 296bhp 2.5-litre petrol engine which drives all four wheels. Both send their reserves through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The all-electric G70 Electrified is due to follow shortly afterwards.

The all-wheel-drive-only GV80, available with either five or seven seats, is also offered with the 2.5-litre engine, as well as a 3.0-litre turbodiesel. As expected, neither car is offered with the petrol V6 option sold in other markets.

Hyundai launched its premium brand in Korea and the US in 2015, and its European expansion will now begin with sales in the UK, Germany and Switzerland.

Hyundai’s premium division scores well in crash tests as it nears its European market la

The new Genesis G80 and GV80 have gained a five-star safety verdict in Euro NCAP’s latest round of testing, while the Citroën C4 earned four stars.

The recent tests focused on “crashworthiness and crash avoidance evaluation”. The new BMW 4 Series Coupé and 4 Series Convertible matched the five-star level achieved by the 3 Series upon which they're based.

Both Genesis models were credited for the effectiveness of their head, chest and centre airbags.

The G80 saloon scored a 91% adult occupant score and 87% child occupant score, as well as a 91% safety assist rating.

The larger GV80 SUV also earned 91% and 87% adult occupant and child occupant scores respectively and 88% for safety assist.

Should I buy one?​

The Genesis G80 seems, in so many ways, like a luxury car for those who’ve had their fill of so many modern premium options; who are ready for something that fits into their life a bit more easily and discreetly than they’re used to, but which defines them a bit less starkly than others might, and that could even make them feel a bit wiser and more grown up for choosing it. That's much too sensible a prospect to ever catch on in a big way, clearly; but it’s different.

The New Genesis G80 Sport Gets Halo Warthog Technology To Obliterate Corners

The striking new trim gets a bright red paint option, all-wheel drive and steering technology from the Halo video game

The new Genesis G80 Sport has been overhauled with all-wheel drive and an optional new rear-wheel steering setup to grip through corners like a Halo Warthog that’s low enough to the ground to not flip over.

If you don’t like the Halo Warthog reference, which is the name for the game’s big Space Marine 4X4 that steers with all four wheels, then perhaps you will be more impressed to know the Genesis rear-wheel steering system is also similar to the setup on the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but not at S-Class prices.

The G80 is currently available with a 2.5-liter turbo four-cylinder making 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque and a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 making 375 HP and 391 lb-ft of torque, but those options may change for the new Sport model.

Genesis G80 Sport Takes on the Germans

Both Lexus and Infiniti have tried to take the fight to the German Three – the triumvirate of Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi – however, each of those brands has a loyal customer base, as well as something which speaks to those customers. Be it perceived quality, the cache of their performance brands, or even just a brand loyalty fostered from an early age, breaking into segments that in many cases these brands created is no mean feat, and Hyundai’s luxury offshoot, Genesis, has taken yet another shot.

The 5 Series, E-Class, and A6 are Genesis’ latest targets, and they had better sit up and pay attention because the G80 is coming for their customers with unique looks, impressive tech, and German-esque build quality. This is hardly surprising when one considers how many top engineers have left well-established brands for the relatively new brand. The Second Genesis was launched in 2020, and the latest news is the introduction of the G80 Sport – think of it as a 5 Series M Sport or E-Class AMG-line.

Genesis describes the G80 Sport’s design as ‘Athletic Elegance’ melding their signature ‘Two Lines’ design language with a bit of black here and some added aero there. The Sport sports a dark glossy chrome radiator grille, a three-dimensional wing-shaped front bumper that accents the intake grille, and black bezels around the intriguing headlamps.

More dark glossy chrome features down the side of the car with 20-inch dark sputtering (yes, that’s what they’re called) alloy wheels at each corner. Brake callipers can be specified in either red or black.

The rear features a horizontal line as well as a new diffuser design which adds to its aggressive rear appearance – there’s no mistaking it for something else, if you know what it is…

Hyundai SA currently has no plans to bring the Genesis brand to South Africa.

Genesis details plan to go all-electric from 2025

Luxury marque will launch final combustion car by 2025 and sell only EVs from 2030

Hyundai's premium brand Genesis has announced that it will only launch electric vehicles from 2025 onwards, just four years after rolling out its first pure EVs.

Following the market launches of the all-electric Electrified G80 saloon and GV60 crossover in 2022, the marque will "focus on a dual electrification strategy involving fuel cell and battery-electric vehicles", launching its final combustion vehicle in 2030.

Genesis itself does not yet market a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, but parent company Hyundai currently sells the Nexo crossover and has promised that hydrogen will continue to play a central role in its electrification strategy in the coming years, so naturally Genesis will follow suit.

Genesis has recently unveiled the GV60 as its first bespoke electric car. It shares its E-GMP platform with Hyundai's Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6, unlike the G80 Electrified, which is based on an adapted version of the combustion-fuelled G80's architecture.

In future, Genesis says it will "put an effort on developing pure electric technologies such as new fuel cell systems with higher power output, and electric systems that help improve efficiency". It will also develop ways of extracting better performance and efficiency from lithium ion batteries.

Beyond its 2025 goal, Genesis is also seeking to become entirely carbon-neutral by 2035; it is the first Hyundai group brand to set a deadline for achieving this ambition. It will "innovate" its entire value chain, changing the way it sources and constructs raw materials, vehicles and parts at all facilities.
