2021 Genesis G80

The 2023 Genesis Electrified G80 Starts At $80,920

The second all-electric model for Genesis comes in just one fully loaded trim.

Genesis has finally released a bit more details and pricing for its second EV, the Electrified G80. Including a $1,095 destination charge, the electric luxury sedan will start at $80,920.

The Electrified G80 (Yes, that’s its name. I suppose they wanted to be more unique than just calling it G80 EV) comes in one fully loaded configuration. Outside, you’ll be able to tell it apart from a standard G80 by its unique grille which has been filled in and has a G-Matrix pattern with a charging port integrated into it. There’s a 19-inch wheel design that’s unique to the Electrified G80 and a unique rear bumper. Which is to say, there are no exhaust outlets because it’s an EV.

The Genesis Electrified G80 Passed Its Crash Tests

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Electrified G80 its top safety award.

The Genesis G70, G80, and G90 have all already received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s top safety rating, called Top Safety Pick+, and now the Electrified G80 can say it has too, as IIHS said Tuesday that the Electrified G80 had earned good ratings in six different crashworthiness criteria, among other tests.

Crash test videos, at this point, are pretty old hat, since most of them look more or less the same, since things like crumple zones are standard in cars these days and many automakers have embraced safety if for nothing else than marketing. The Electrified G80's crash tests aren’t much different than you might expect, though I am impressed with just how deep its crumple zone is, on the first test shown here. That car really collapses in on itself.

The 2022 Genesis G80 Sport Should Put Other Luxury Sedans On Notice

The G80 Sport does everything its competitors do for thousands of dollars less, and looks better while doing it, too

Verdict

What Genesis has done with the G80 Sport is excellent. The level of luxury, amenities, performance and standard safety equipment can’t be beat. Combine that with a price that’s thousands less than its key rivals, along with Genesis’ comprehensive warranty, and the G80 Sport really seems like a no-brainer purchase decision.

Genesis’ real problem is still overall brand awareness, not to mention the lack of standalone dealers, something the brand is trying to work on. Some buyers may be turned off when they get to a Genesis store and see a Hyundai Kona and Santa Cruz sitting across the showroom floor from a near six-figure Genesis G90. But once you’re familiar with the brand, the G80 Sport is proof that this automaker knows what it’s doing. The G80 Sport is a sedan more people should be considering.

Facelifted Genesis G80 Has Fresher Looks, New 27-Inch Screen And More Knobs

The G80 could get an updated V6 with an electric supercharger and mild-hybrid system

We saw the release of the updated Genesis GV80 SUV last month, which brought subtle exterior styling tweaks but a big overhaul to the cabin. Now, Hyundai’s luxury brand unveiled the updated G80 sedan in Korea, which gets similar tweaks to keep this three-year-old luxobarge looking fresh.

The G80 is still a stunning sedan, so Genesis didn’t need to change much of its design with this facelift. Its large crest grille features a new double-mesh diamond pattern, and the bumpers have been redesigned to be slightly more aggressive. The thin LED headlights have a new look with Micro Lens Array technology, there are new wheel designs, and the rear bumper has hidden exhaust tips.

On the inside, Genesis completely redesigned the G80's dashboard and center console. A new 27-inch touchscreen tops the dash, combining the gauge cluster and infotainment screen into one seamless display, and it can still be controlled by a crystal rotary knob on the center console. The climate controls have been redesigned, still using physical knobs and some new buttons in addition to a touch display, and there is a new row of media control buttons with actual knobs for volume and tuning. Sadly, the funky four-spoke steering wheel has been replaced by a more conventional three-spoke unit.

There’s no official word on if Genesis has updated the G80's powertrains. The current G80 is offered with either a 300-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-4 or a 375-hp twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, both of which come standard with all-wheel drive. Both engines might gain slight bumps in horsepower, but the real news could be the introduction of a higher-powered version of the V6 – the new GV80 Coupe adds an electric supercharger and 48-volt mild-hybrid system, bringing horsepower past 400, so the updated G80 Sport could also use that same setup.
