The all new 2nd Gen Ghost has been announced./

Rolls-Royce Ghost

In 2009, Rolls-Royce announced a new addition to its portfolio that offered something entirely different to its flagship Phantom. This product resonated with a new group of men and women who responded to the marque's relentless pursuit of perfection in design, engineering and craftsmanship, but sought a more modest and minimalist expression of Rolls-Royce. The execution of the first Goodwood Ghost, and its laser focus on meeting the demands of its clients, was an unmitigated success, and over the course of its ten-year lifecycle, this transformative motor car became the most successful product in the company's 116-year history. Ghost's formidable success was vital in enabling the brand to scale up production, invest in its capabilities and establish Rolls-Royce as the truly global brand it is today.

Additionally, Ghost's decade-long market presence enabled the marque's Luxury Intelligence Specialists to gather vital information about developing behaviours in how Ghost clients use their motor car, how they commission it and how they perceive Rolls-Royce. These highly successful and diverse entrepreneurs and founders, who selected this product to celebrate their ongoing ascension, were citizens of the world - they had been educated abroad, they travelled extensively and experienced Rolls-Royce in many cultures.

Due to Ghost's energetic, dynamic personality, these clients came to realise that the Rolls-Royce brand could offer more than a chauffeur-driven experience. Indeed, in the United States of America and areas of Europe, clients were self-driving their Ghost from the very early stages of its introduction. Meanwhile, in Asia, clients were engaging heavily in the connected technology on board, be it for business or pleasure.

New Rolls-Royce Ghost is firm's most advanced model

Luxury marque's best-selling car gains new aluminium spaceframe architecture and 6.75-litre V12 engine

Rolls-Royce has unveiled an all-new, second-generation version of the most successful car in its history: the Goodwood-built Ghost saloon. The new model ditches the BMW 7 Series-derived underpinnings of the original car in favour of the latest flexible aluminium spaceframe already used for the Phantom and Cullinan.

Billed as a “slightly smaller, less ostentatious means of owning a Rolls-Royce” than the Phantom, the new Ghost is 90mm longer than its predecessor, at 5549mm, and 30mm wider. It’s powered by a specially adapted version of the 6.75-litre twin-turbocharged V12 introduced with the Cullinan, replacing the outgoing model’s 6.6-litre unit but offering unchanged power (563bhp) with 10% more peak torque, up to 627lb ft.

With a commensurate entry price of £208,000 before local taxes (nearer £250,000 in the UK), the Ghost is claimed to be the company’s most high-tech model yet, even more so than the Phantom by virtue of its standard four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering. It also introduces impressive new ride comfort and noise reduction measures that would appear likely in time to flow through the rest of the range.

The new Ghost’s imminent arrival has already been used by Roll-Royce to introduce the concept of ‘post-opulence’, a quality of design simplicity and purity the company’s researchers say appeals to customers who will make day-to-day use of the car, sometimes by using a chauffeur and sometimes driving it themselves. According to Rolls designer Henry Cloke, who first articulated the post-opulence idea, the flexibility of the new spaceframe allows the Ghost its impressively short front overhang (which in turn improves handling by allowing the engine’s weight to be carried entirely inside the wheelbase), and adds about 30mm of body width while maintaining an uncomplicated body side design.

They did all that work with interior styling and the front of the car & then use a Rover as a template to make the back

New Rolls-Royce Ghost unveiled: ‘minimalist’ design plus V12 survives!

The new Rolls-Royce Ghost has finally been revealed, with the second-generation model assuming a “minimalist” design and retaining a V12 engine.

Billed as an “authentically super-luxury product”, the new all-paw Ghost rides on Rolls-Royce’s proprietary aluminium spaceframe architecture (which already underpins the Phantom and Cullinan).

At 5 546 mm, the new model is some 89 mm longer than its forebear, while its overall width has grown by 30 mm to 1 978 mm. The standard wheelbase now measures 3 295 mm, while unladen weight is listed as 2 490 kg.

The British firm says it has furthered developed the twin-turbo 6,75-litre V12 petrol engine, which here features a bespoke Ghost engine map to ensure “ample performance”. Peak power is 420 kW while maximum torque comes in at 850 N.m (that latter figure is available from a mere 1 600 r/min).

That’s enough, claims the firm, for the new Ghost to hit 100 km/h from standstill in 4,8 seconds, before topping out at an electronically governed 250 km/h.

Rolls Royce Ghost 2020 review

Should I buy one?

My understanding is that we’ll see a fully electrified Rolls-Royce some time this decade, and my suspicion is that electric driving will suit a big luxury saloon like this perfectly.

For now, though, the big V12 is the only choice. And if the stamp on the block says Rolls-Royce? This time, the character of the rest of the car says the same, too.

Rolls-Royce Ghost Extended

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars announced the new Ghost Extended, offering the indulgence of enhanced rear seating space with no compromise to Ghost's driving dynamics. Rolls-Royce Ghost Extended is the product of an exhaustive process of consultation with a new generation of Rolls-Royce clients. This global, highly dynamic group of entrepreneurs expressed a desire for a chauffeur-driven business tool for the week that can transform into a serenely comfortable and dynamic self-driven saloon at the weekend. Ghost Extended is the response. First customer deliveries will be made in the fourth quarter of 2020.

New Rolls-Royce Ghost Extended offers extra space and luxury

Stretched version of new Mk2 Ghost promises more space, added comfort and perfectly chilled champagne

Rolls-Royce has launched an Extended version of its new Ghost luxury saloon, with additional space for rear passengers.

The new variant of the recently launched second-generation Ghost is developed for use as a chauffeured limousine, offering extra space and special features focused on the rear of the cabin. It will likely prove particularly popular in China, where there's high demand for extended-wheelbase saloons.

Rolls-Royce boss Torsten Müller-Otvös said the Ghost Extended was developed because the firm’s customers had asked for a version “that provides the indulgence of enhanced rear space within the rear suite with no compromise to driving dynamics”.

The Ghost Extended is based on a stretched version of the aluminium spaceframe architecture used on the standard Ghost (and the Phantom and Cullinan). It has been lengthened by 170mm from the standard Ghost’s 5549mm, with the wheelbase increased by 170mm to 3465mm.

Rolls Royce Ghost Extended revealed with added rear legroom

The recently revealed Rolls Royce Ghost has been provided with an Extended option for those who want to make the most of their in-cabin experience. While retaining a four-seater layout, the British luxury vehicle adds 170 mm to the length which has been put to use to expand the rear legroom.

With this enhancement, the Ghost Extended offers more legroom than any other four-seater sedan currently on the market, excluding the larger Phantom Extended. Catering to the customers’ needs, the Ghost Extended offers no compromise to the car’s pure and minimalist design.

Visually, the added length has been disguised by extending the rear door section to preserve the lines of the silhouette. With the added space in the cabin, owners can now opt for a reclining Serenity Seat which aims to replicate a business jet cabin environment.
