Rolls-Royce Ghost gets Black Badge treatment

Luxury saloon gets more dynamic brief and bespoke styling to appeal to younger customers

Rolls-Royce has revealed the latest model in its Black Badge series: the Ghost.

The new Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge is a more powerful and more individual version of the luxury saloon introduced last year and, like other Black Badge models, is aimed at bringing younger buyers into the Rolls-Royce brand.

It uses a 29bhp more powerful version of the standard Ghost’s twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre V12 engine, boosted to 592bhp. Torque is increased by 37lb ft to a maximum of 664lb ft, all of which is available from just 1700rpm.

The all-wheel-drive Ghost Black Badge adds a new ‘Low’ driving mode, which sharpens up numerous driving functions, including gearshifts from the eight-speed automatic gearbox that are made 50% quicker and a tweaked exhaust note.

What’s it like in the back?

Good, I think? You see, while being chauffeured for the final section of the test ‘drive’ I discovered a bottle of Nyetimber in the rear fridge and got tucked into that… all in the name of thorough product testing you understand. So I can’t remember much other than it being an extraordinarily pleasant way to travel. If you absolutely must have the most opulent of the opulent, there’s always the Phantom, but the Ghost does the same things just as well, and the Black Badge is the one to go for – a bit of marketing genius from Rolls that gently erodes the old-man image of old and points the Spirt of Ecstasy in a more future-proofed direction. Now, bring on Spectre.

Should I buy one?

A success, then? As the Rolls-Royce Ghost for the more keen driver, yes, although that’s all relative even in the world of the super-saloon. A Mercedes-AMG S65 this is not, of course. But nor is it trying to be.

As an exercise in styling and desirability, the car's year-long wait times and seemingly unstoppable progress of Rolls-Royce speak volumes. Rolls has built it, and they have come.

Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge unveiled with more power

The Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge has been revealed as an exclusive and bespoke offering. In order to make it a bit more exciting, the brand has also given the luxury sedan a bump in power.

Adding customisation appeal to the Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge, the manufacturer will allow its customers to select one of its 44 000 colours but most of its clientele has requested the signature Black finish pictured here. To give it this finish, 45 kg of paint has been applied to the body and goes through an atomisation process before being oven dried. This painting process takes between three to five hours.

For the cabin, the Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge sports multiple wood layers are pressed onto the interior with a black Bolivar veneer for the uppermost base layer. Ambiance for the cabin is created by an illuminated fascia surrounded by 850 “stars”. 152 LEDs are mounted above and beneath the fascia with each bulb being colour-matched to the cabin’s clock and instrument dial lighting.

The Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge retains the twin-turbocharged 6,75-litre V12 powerplant but power has been increased to 441 kW and 900 N.m of torque available from 1 700 r/min. Gearshift speeds are been increased by 50 per cent when 90 per cent of the throttle is applied.

Rolls-Royce reports best sales in 117-year history

Arrival of new Ghost saloon helps luxury firm boost global volumes by 49% year on year

Rolls-Royce sold the most cars in its 117-year history in 2021, boosting volumes 49% year on year and reporting record sales in most markets.

The luxury marque sold 5586 cars globally last year, 1836 more than in 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic had a near-universal impact on car manufacturers, and 461 more than the previous record set in pre-pandemic 2019.

It is the highest volume recorded by the Goodwood firm since it was founded as Rolls-Royce Limited in 1906, which it attributes to "all-time record sales in most regions" and high demand for each of its five current models.

Rolls-Royce said the sales volumes achieved in 2021 make it the "undisputed leader in the plus-€250k (£209k) segment".

Precise figures for each car have not been released, but Rolls-Royce says growth "has been driven principally" by the Ghost saloon – its newest model – and bolstered by the launch of the more dynamically oriented Ghost Black Badge in October.

A Canadian business owner Vincent Yu has spent four years turning his luxurious Rolls-Royce Wraith Coupe into a posh electric vehicle that he said will run for 311 miles (500 kilometers) on a full charge.

In addition to spending endless hours in his garage with a small team of mechanics and machinists, Yu said he also had to make several trips to the U.S., Japan and Germany to purchase specialized car parts. He also had to sell his house to help finance the conversion. This led to his wife leaving him when she got fed up with the project.

Uh oh, Brabus has had a crack at modifying a Rolls-Royce Ghost

German tuner gives the Ghost 690bhp and much carbon fibre. Ruins it in the process

Brabus no longer limits itself to just Mercedes-Benz (and Smart) tuning. This is the Bottrop-based tuner’s take on the Rolls-Royce Ghost, and the first thing you need to know is that the iconic 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12 now makes 690bhp and 701lb ft of torque.

That’s up from 563bhp and 623lb ft as standard. The increase comes from a new ECU module and a reprogramming of the electronic boost pressure control, and results in a 0-62mph time of 4.6 seconds. Top speed is still limited to 155mph.

There’s plenty of carbon fibre add-ons to let people know you haven’t bought a standard Ghost too. Just check out the carbon front splitter, the carbon grille sideburns, the rear diffuser and the lip spoiler. Yes, you're right - a spoiler on a Rolls-Royce.

Anyone else of the opinion it resembles a wise old Disney character from head-on? Perhaps one that’s disappointed with the path that the main character has taken? No? Just us then…

Brabus are back with a modified Rolls-Royce Ghost

German tuning company Brabus is renowned for upgrading high-end vehicles, however the Bottrop based brand has been feverishly working on projects over the past few months. The latest of which includes a modified Rolls-Royce Ghost which has been tastefully improved.

This includes both visually and mechanically since the modified Rolls-Royce Ghost, now called the Rolls-Royce Ghost Brabus 700, receives 700 hp (515 kW) as its name states. Its torque has also been increased to 950 N.m which is available from as little as 2,000 rpm while its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. This is a 95 kW and 100 N.m improvement over its already capable, stock counterpart.

Spofec Ghost Black Badge sits lower and goes faster than standard model

The opulent Ghost Black Badge land yacht has had its V12 reworked by Spofec to the tune of 519 kW and 1 002 N.m making it an ominous-looking force to be reckoned with.

Spofec has given the Ghost Black Badge a once-over. The Novitec division that dabbles exclusively with Rolls-Royce models has now imparted their experience onto the top-tier Black Badge model from the Ghost lineup. Both inside and out, the Ghost Black Badge has received upgrades to help improve its performance abilities.

The 6,8-litre V12 has been fiddled with to produce 519 kW and 1 002 N.m thanks to an N-Tronic performance module which remaps the injection and ignition while boost pressure has been increased. This is quite a significant increase over the 435 kW and 900 N.m from the standard model when it rolls off of the production line. All of these upgrades mean the four-door cruiser can sprint up to 100 km/h in 4,3 seconds and onto an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.
