All-new, SA-bound BMW 2 Series Coupe revealed
BMW has lifted the lid on the all-new 2 Series Coupe and like its predecessor it remains something of a driver-focused black sheep in the ‘1 and 2’ compact family, as the only model still built around a rear-wheel drive platform.
Due to reach South Africa in early 2022, the new BMW 2 Series Coupe is somewhat larger than its predecessor, being 105 mm longer and 64 mm wider, yet for a more road-hugging stance BMW has lowered the car by 28 mm.
The newcomer is also offering an all-wheel drive configuration for the first time, with a rear-biased xDrive system being fitted as standard to the new M240i variant, which will top the range until the next BMW M2 arrives.
The M240i xDrive is powered by a brawnier version of its predecessor’s 3-litre straight six turbopetrol, now producing 285 kW (which is 35 kW more than before) and 500 N.m. 0-100 km/h now takes 4,3 seconds (a 0,3 second improvement) while the top speed remains limited to 250 km/h.
BMW has also announced two rear-driven four-cylinder models, in the form of a 220i petrol model with 135 kW and 300 N.m, and a 220d diesel that pushes 140 kW and 400 N.m. According to BMW the two models will sprint from 0-100km/h in 7,5 and 7,0 seconds respectively. All engines in the line-up are paired with the familiar eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission.
M Sport suspension, as well as variable sport steering, are standard on the new 2 Series Coupe, while the M240i xDrive gets a model-specific version of the aforementioned suspension, as well as an M Sport rear axle differential, additional front axle struts and M Sport brakes. Adaptive M suspension is an option on the flagship model. The M240i rolls on 19-inch alloys and upgraded high performance tyres are offered as an option. Those opting for the four-cylinder models with an M Sport package will also get to enjoy 19-inch rims with mixed-size tyres. Furthermore, buyers can order an M Sport package ‘Pro’, which includes ‘M’ alloy wheels, M Sport brakes, a front spoiler lip and rear spoiler.

After releasing initial teaser images, BMW is opening a new chapter in its tradition of sports compact models with the unveiling of its all-new 2 Series Coupe. The new car is expected to arrive in South Africa in early 2022.
Customers can choose between two four-cylinder engines in petrol and diesel guise. The petrol unit produces 135kW and 300Nm while the diesel churns out 140kW and 400Nm, working in conjunction with a 48V mild-hybrid system. The range-topping M240i xDrive Coupe is powered by a 3.0-litre engine with 285kW and 500Nm.
All models are rear-wheel-driven and use an eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard. A 230i Coupé, powered by a four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 180kW, will be added to the range later next year.

Dynamically focused two-door makes UK public debut at Goodwood, with rear-biased four-wheel drive in M-fettled performance trim
The new, second-generation BMW 2 Series Coupé has made its dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, ahead of a market launch in early 2022.
Retaining rear-wheel drive as standard and a cab-rear silhouette, the new two-door model is pitched at “customers at the sporty end of the driving system seeking an emotionally rich driving experience”.
From launch, it will be offered in three guises: the petrol 220i, with a 2.0-litre turbo four sending 181bhp and 221lb ft to the rear axle; the 220d, with a mild-hybrid 2.0-litre diesel four making 188bhp and 295lb ft; and the M240i xDrive, which has a 3.0-litre petrol straight six and four-wheel drive. This will top the line-up with 369bhp and 369lb ft until the full-fat M2 Coupé arrives later in 2022.
Each model uses an eight-speed automatic gearbox with Launch Control and Sprint mode functionality. The M240i, which Autocar recently drove in prototype guise, adds an electronic rear differential in line with its heightened handling focus, and its xDrive four-wheel drive system is programmed to give a rear bias in true BMW sports car fashion. A mid-rung 241bhp 230i variant, due in summer 2022, will also be available with a differential on the rear axle.

VIDEO: BMW 2 Series Coupe makes world debut at Goodwood
Following its web reveal earlier this week, BMW has released video footage of the new 2 Series Coupemaking its world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England.
In the new clip, former British Touring Car Champion Paul O’Neill takes us through the car’s highlights, together with BMW Product Operations Manager Charles Turner.
As a reminder the new 2 Series Coupe, which is due in South Africa in early 2022, remains the only sub-3 Series model to be built on a rear-wheel drive platform. But just how much longer can they call it a 2 Series? We say this because the new model is a full 105 mm longer than its predecessor, and 64 mm wider, although BMW has lowered it by 28 mm.
