BMW is stepping up testing of the upcoming 2 Series Coupé ahead of its market reintroduction early next year, with new spy images giving us a clearer look yet at the firm's smallest two-door model.

Lighter camouflage means we get a better look at the new two-door, four-seat coupé. Visible links to the shape of the latest 4 Series are apparent, in particular the long bonnet and wide rear stance, although at the front BMW appears to have grafted the face from the 2 Series Gran Coupé onto it, rather than borrow the controversial upright grille from the 4 Series.

Due to be produced at the firm’s San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico, the 2 Series Coupé is known internally under the codename G42 and is scheduled for an unveiling towards the end of 2021.

Significantly, the new coupé shares very little of its architecture with the 2 Series Gran Coupé as it will be rear-wheel drive. Shunning BMW’s front-driven FAAR platform, it will instead utilise an evolution of its versatile CLAR platform. As well as underpinning BMW’s largest saloons and SUVs, the architecture is also found underneath the current Z4 and its Toyota Supra sibling.

275kW and AWD! BMW reveals secrets of next M240i Coupe

BMW has confirmed that the range-topping version of its next 2 Series Coupe will have all-wheel drive but don’t worry, it’s not following the 1 Series, and its 2 Series Gran Coupe counterpart, onto the ULK front-wheel drive platform. Instead, the 2 Series Coupe will remain the only sub-3 Series BMW to be built around the company’s rear-wheel drive architecture.

BMW has also confirmed that the upcoming M240i will retain its six-cylinder petrol engine format, and it’s going to offer even more power than today’s car with BMW quoting a figure of 275kW for the new variant. For the record, the current M240i Coupe is tuned to 250kW. The updated 3-litre engine will be paired with an eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission, BMW says. There is no word yet on an M2 replacement, but BMW could be leaving that surprise for another day.

Given how well BMW knows its clients, there is a very good chance that the all-wheel drive M240i xDrive Coupe model will have a rear-wheel drive drift mode like the M5. Although this has yet to be confirmed, BMW does state that the AWD system will have a definite rearward bias to ensure “hallmark BMW driving pleasure in conjunction with a power distribution that adapts perfectly to adverse road and weather conditions”.

Also sharpening its dynamic ability will be an M sports differential with a fully variable locking effect, which allows for the targeted distribution of power between the back wheels.

The less powerful variants in the 2 Series Coupe range are expected to be rear-wheel driven, and BMW will also offer the option of an Adaptive M Chassis with electronically controlled dampers.

Festival of Speed to host BMW's latest unveiling, as well as Lotus Emira, Genesis G70 Shooting Brake and more

The all-new, second-generation BMW 2 Series Coupé will be revealed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on 8 July.

Taking centre stage at the brand's display, the two-door 2 Series will appear alongside BMW's new i4 saloon and iX SUV EVs, which are making their public debut at the Sussex event.

The 2 Series, which Autocar has driven in near-complete prototype guise, will also take to Goodwood's famed 1.16-mile hillclimb course, alongside the new M5 CS - Munich's most powerful M car yet.

Details of BMW's show stand have emerged following Goodwood's recent confirmation that the 2021 Festival of Speed can return at full capacity after a year's hiatus as a result of the pandemic.

The festival is part of the UK government's Events Research Programme (ERP), which will see a series of large-scale sporting events, festivals and performances go ahead with no social distancing rules in force, provided all attendees are either fully vaccinated or test negative for Covid-19 prior to entry.

BMW to reveal all-new 2 Series Coupe on July 8

BMW has confirmed that it will pull the covers off its new-generation 2 Series Coupe at the Goodwood Festival of Speed next Thursday, July 8, where it will also take to the ‘Hill’ for the first time as part of the ‘First Glance’ category.

BMW has already spilled the beans on many of the new Coupe’s technical secrets, and most importantly the Bavarian carmaker has confirmed that unlike its Gran Coupe sibling, the two-door 2 Series will be built around a rear-wheel drive platform.

That said, the M240i variant, which will top the range until the next M2 arrives, will be fitted with all-wheel drive for the first time, albeit with a rear-biased set-up, while the lower-rung 2 Series models are expected to offer rear-wheel propulsion only. BMW will also offer the option of an Adaptive M Chassis with electronically controlled dampers.

Another day goes by and another leak comes in only this time it is the all-new BMW 2 Series coupé.

This is not our first look at the new G42 2 Series either as we saw the vehicle in leaks last year already but this time we get to see the new coupé sporting the new Thundernight metallic colour which was seen in several spy photos.

The front-end doesn’t get the massive grille from recent BMW models, but it does look significantly different to the previous generation.

We’ve seen the spy shots, but it appears that an image of the new BMW 2 Series Coupe has leaked online ahead of its official reveal later this week. Is it real?

The image above, shared by Instagram account @wilcoblok, is reportedly a video screenshot of the new BMW 2 Series Coupe which is due to be officially revealed later this week at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Note that the new BMW 2 Series won’t adopt the oversize kidney grille seen on the M3 and M4 duo.

Earlier this year, a disguised prototype of a next-generation BMW 2 Series Coupe was filmed undergoing testing on a Californian highway. The clip, which includes tantalising close-up tracking footage, reveals a few interesting tidbits (and one or two possible red herrings) about the upcoming model’s design.

Now that the fanfare about the low-volume local introduction of the BMW M2 CS (of which almost the entire consignment of units were sold via an auction) has blown over, enthusiasts have all eyes on the new-generation 2 Series.

The 2022 BMW 2 Series Debuts With Weird Looks And Without A Manual Transmission

Arguably BMW's most authentic vehicle gets a bit weirder and a little less authentic.

The BMW 2 Series Coupe has been praised by many as the most authentic modern BMW thanks to its compact size, reasonable curb weight, available manual transmission, and handsome but understated looks. Sadly, one of those ingredients, possibly three, is gone for 2022.

I think the new 2 Series looks good, but I’m not going to shove that opinion down your throats. Because you know what, I totally get where my brother Ian and my coworker Adam are coming from; they’re currently gathering some moist towels to clean the vomit off their keyboards.

My keyboard remains dry because I like weird. I like the fact that these taillights have aggressive, angular divisions between the reverse lamp and taillamp. I like the hourglass license plate-recess stamping in the trunk. I dig how busy that plastic bumper cover looks, with all of its shapes and its huge exhaust openings.

Even in 220i form (BMW offers this trim in Europe; the U.S. only gets 230i and M240i) with its simpler bumper cover, the 2 Series rear looks good. The sharp shapes in the light housing, and the nice, strong divisions between the large white reverse lamp and the red taillight section — it’s odd, sure. But in a good way.

New 2021 BMW 2 Series Coupe gets 369bhp M240i range-topper

Dynamically focused two-door gets rear-biased four-wheel drive in M-fettled performance trim

The new, second-generation BMW 2 Series Coupé has been unwrapped ahead of a debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and a market launch in early 2022.

Retaining rear-wheel drive as standard and a cab-rear silhouette, the new two-door model is pitched at “customers at the sporty end of the driving system seeking an emotionally rich driving experience”.

From launch, it will be offered in three guises: the petrol 220i, with a 2.0-litre turbo four sending 181bhp and 221lb ft to the rear axle; the 220d, with a mild-hybrid 2.0-litre diesel four making 188bhp and 295lb ft; and the M240i xDrive, which has a 3.0-litre petrol straight six and four-wheel drive. This will top the line-up with 369bhp and 369lb ft until the full-fat M2 Coupé arrives later in 2022.

Each model uses an eight-speed automatic gearbox with Launch Control and Sprint mode functionality. The M240i, which Autocar recently drove in prototype guise, adds an electronic rear differential in line with its heightened handling focus, and its xDrive four-wheel drive system is programmed to give a rear bias in true BMW sports car fashion. A mid-rung 241bhp 230i variant, due in summer 2022, will also be available with a differential on the rear axle.

With 34bhp more power than the previous M240i, the new range-topper hits 62mph from rest in just 4.3sec and tops out at an electronically limited 155mph. Efficiency, meanwhile, is pegged at 32.1- 34.9mpg, which compares with 41.5-44.8mpg for the 220i and 55.4-60.1mpg for the 220d.

Full reveal: New BMW 2 Series

Having courted controversy by switching the 1 Series to a FWD platform and the 4 Series' divisive styling, BMW has stuck with convention with the new 2 Series Coupe – it’s a handsome rear-wheel-drive compact sportscar, of which the initial flagship is powered by a 275 kW 3.0-litre inline-6 turbopetrol motor.

The finished look of the newcomer comes as no surprise (because an image of the “Thundernight Metallic” purple M240i xDrive was leaked earlier this week), but many traditionalists will be relieved the 2nd-generation 2 Series Coupe sports a pair of wide kidneys, flanked by LED headlamps with single-hexagon lighting signatures.

In profile, the newcomer has traditional coupe proportions, with a long bonnet and stubby tail section fore and aft of the cab. There are a few fresh details, however, such as triangular elements in the bumpers, flush-fitting door handles, a subtle integrated spoiler on the boot lid, as well as 3D-effect LED tail-light clusters.

As opposed to its 1 Series hatchback and 2 Series Gran Coupe siblings, the 2 Series Coupe is based on the Bavarian firm’s rear-wheel-drive CLAR platform (the newcomer is believed to be closely related to the Z4 roadster); it has 12% more torsional rigidity than its predecessor and a near-50:50 weight distribution.

We expect the new BMW 2 Series Coupe to arrive in Mzansi towards the end of 2021.
