2022 BMW 2 Series (2nd Generation)

Opinion: Hands up who melted the rear of the new 2 Series

One TG writer reckons BMW’s design department was so nearly back with a bang

Clearly someone in BMW’s design department held a heat gun up against a clay model of the new BMW 2 Series Coupe for too long, and TG is determined to find out who it was and why they didn’t own up before the final design was signed off. As the old Internet saying goes: “Well it was *bleepin* one of yas.”

Just look at that rear end. How can it look so droopy and melted when the rest of the design, particularly the M240i’s, is so purposeful? The 2 Coupe got its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, but each car seemed to be reverse parked suspiciously close to a wall. Make of that what you will…

BMW reckons there are 2002 vibes and both the front and side angles look strong (thank the Lord for standard Kidneys). The proportions are spot on too, with the new Two being lower, longer and wider than before.

Cant wait to get my hands on the reasonably priced 220i msport for only R1m

Just need to save for a few options now.

Ok so I have made up my mind. This car is fugly and I don't want one. I was on the fence and telling myself to give me some time to get used to the design. But I just can't. It sucks.

Geez dude, another one with a resprayed fender.

Get your eyes checked before posting poor examples of cars (japcraps).
lol you need your eyes checked , pic was taken at dusk so the lighting wasnt good.

Yeah whatever.

Go take a photo in clear daylight and then I'll show you even more faults on that bodywork.

You're trying too hard to sugar coat the

Whole car is oem paint and nothing has been resprayed.Still that crystal grey as it left the factory.

oh and whats your obsession with paint and scratches ? Have you never owned an older car ?

Don't be naive and think your brand new cars come to you flawless.

Many are damaged in transit and repaired under your nose.

It's true I am obsessed with car paint remaining even swirl free.

Here's Why The New BMW 2's Design Doesn't Work, According To Frank Stephenson

Lots of shapes and little sense is the long and short of it.

Like any modern BMW, the 2022 2 Series is a polarizing vehicle. As my colleague David said when he wrote about it a month ago, there are a few reasons for that. For one, it’s big — 3.5 inches longer, 2.6 inches wider and at least 100 pounds heavier (depending on trim) than the coupe it’s replacing. BMW is also nixing the manual.

But of course, the most questionable aspect of the new 2 is its exterior, which most of the Jalopnik staff thinks is all right, and I personally can’t stand.

Admittedly, the transgressions afoot here aren’t as overt as those on the M4. There’s no chipmunk kidney grille, and I don’t get the sense BMW modeled the face of its baby coupe after the nasal cavity of a skeleton. But the outgoing 2 Series was the only BMW I still aspired to own — the only one that felt as though it was in any way tied into the purposeful, understated, engineering-first nature of the brand. And I have to say I feel a bit vindicated in that sentiment, because Frank Stephenson — a dude who has designed BMWs — makes many points I wholeheartedly agree with in his latest video.
