But those are all minor gripes, and this is a great car with a brilliant chassis, a supremely capable engine and the perfect blend of touring comfort and back-road aggression that you’d ideally want if this was your daily. It easily could be. I mean, the one thing that’d make it more practical is if it were a wagon or a hatch or something. Like a real one, not whatever the 2 Gran Coupe is.

The hardcore set will wait for the big gun, the M2. Or they’ll try to source an outgoing-gen manual, which I can much more readily understand. But the M240i is the optimal small BMW coupe for most people. Sure, its outward demeanor has changed, but don’t let that fool you. It still has a heart of gold.

The all-new BMW 2 Series will be launching in SA in the first quarter of 2022 and pricing has been loaded onto BMW SA’s website. Here’s how much you can expect to pay, plus which models are confirmed.

The all-new BMW 2 Series looks radically different from the rest of the Bavarian brand’s portfolio. When finished in the new Thundernight Metallic, the BMW M240i xDrive really looks special. Yes, you read right. With this new generation of 2 Series, xDrive has made its debut. Fear not purists, as the next-generation BMW M2 will be offered with rear-wheel drive only.

From BMW SA’s price list, it looks like we’re getting a 3-model lineup, before the flagship M2 eventually makes an appearance. The BMW 220i starts off the range, powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder producing 135 kW and 300 Nm. Power goes to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox. BMW claims a 0-100 kph time of 7.5 seconds.

With the price of petrol reaching silly heights, diesel may provide the answer and BMW is offering a 220d. The 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine produces a healthy 140 kW and 400 Nm, and is said to hit 100 kph in just 7 seconds.

For the performance fans, the BMW M240i xDrive comes out swinging with a 3.0-litre turbocharged 6-cylinder petrol engine pumping out 285 kW and 500 Nm. For the first time in the 2 Series coupe range, all-wheel drive makes its debut and this allows the M240i xDrive to hit 100 kph in just 4.5 seconds. Hopefully it will be more engaging, unlike the current BMW M135i.

We can all agree that aside from having two kidney grilles and four wheels, the styling of BMW’s all-new 2 Series represents quite the departure for the iconic brand, however purists and fans fear not, it can still be had with six cylinders and rear-wheel drive, although if you want those two things in the same car, you’ll have to wait a little longer for the all-new M2…

For now, South Africa is set to receive three models of the G42 2 Series, with one oil-burner model flanked by two petrol on either end of the lineup. The BMW 220i Coupé is powered by a 2,0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol motor, good for 135 kW and 300 Nm. Power is sent to the rear wheels via the good old ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox and BMW claims a 0-100 km/h time of 7,5 seconds. The 220i Coupé’s claimed fuel consumption is 6,3 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 145 g/km.

As with most ‘20d badged BMW’s, the 220d Coupé features a 140 kW and 400 Nm 2,0-litre turbocharged 4-cyliner diesel motor which will get the littlest BMW Coupé to 100 km/h in 7 seconds flat. This all happens through the same ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox, too, and BMW claim an impressive 4,8 l/100km for the diesel coupé and CO2 emissions of 126 g/km.

The 2 Series Coupé can be expected in South Africa in the first quarter of 2022 with final packages and specifications to be confirmed closer to the time.

guess I wont be getting one of those.
The prices are pretty insane.
Thoughts on GFV and financing options pushing the total prices of vehicles up artificially ?
As fewer and fewer people buy cars outright, they pay in installments and paying in a little extra every month means you load on crazy expensive options too
The manufactures bump the prices more and more , less people buy once off, more financing, the cycle continues.
The 220d is only 10% less than a 320D. I know which I'd rather get.....
 
New BMW 2 Series Coupé here soon: SA pricing released

The all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé is due to hit South African showrooms during the first quarter of this year, and now we can tell you how much it costs after the new model was added to BMW’s latest price list.

The new two-door will be offered in three flavours, with the base 220i starting at R765 000 and the 220d priced from R815 000, while the range-topping M240i xDrive will set you back R1 050 000.

The new range commands a premium of around R110 000 over the previous base model, but it’s still around 90 grand cheaper than the equivalent BMW 4 Series model, keeping in mind that the M Sport package appears to be standard with the new 2 Coupé (and why wouldn’t you want it?)

Unlike the four-door 2 Series Gran Coupe that went the front-wheel drive route, the new BMW 2 Series Coupé retains its rear-wheel drive architecture, sharing many of its oily bits with the 4 Series and achieving that hallowed 50:50 weight balance. However, while the four-cylinder models retain their rear-wheel drive layout, the M240i now adopts all-wheel drive.

It’s also a much bigger car than before, with the 2 Series Coupé having grown by 105mm versus its predecessor, while width has increased by 64mm, and overall height has been reduced by 28mm. With sophisticated chassis technology that’s been inherited from the 4 Series, BMW says buyers can look forward to a “vast improvement” in overall agility and steering precision.
