BMW i7 review: how does a cinema on wheels cope with UK roads?

Should I buy one?

As a luxury limo, the i7 really is an impressive tour de force. It’s quick, refined and packed full of tech – some of which you might actually use, especially if you’ve hired yourself a chauffeur at the same time as buying the 7.

As a piece of design it’s harder to understand, although darker body colours do improve things somewhat. Still, it’s never going to be a shrinking violet, particularly if you spec BMW’s optional Swarovski crystal headlights. But then it would seem that the 7 Series is still going to be a good barge to drive too, and with air suspension plus relatively small 19-inch wheels standard fit the ride is fantastically smooth.

We like the i7 a lot, and if an EV fits into your (or your driver’s) schedule then at this point in time we’d be picking the BMW over the Mercedes EQS. Still, best get them together for a shootout at some point, no? It’ll be rock, paper, scissors to decide who gets to sit in the back…

 
BMW i7 M70 becomes brand's most powerful EV with 650bhp

Luxury saloon will reach the UK during the second half of 2023; arrives with newly developed dual-motor drivetrain

BMW's M Performance car division has lifted the veil on the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive – the company's most powerful electric model to date.

Set to see UK sales during the second half of 2023 following its unveiling at the Shanghai motor show, the upmarket saloon arrives with a newly developed dual-motor drivetrain offering a combined 650bhp – some 40bhp more than the system used by the iX M60 xDrive launched in 2022.

At the heart of the latest electric-powered M Performance model is a front electric motor with 255bhp and a heavily revised rear electric motor delivering up to 483bhp.

The latter is claimed to provide a new standard of power density at 2.41kW per kg owing, in part, to a patented six-coil design within the stator.

All up, the two electric motors provide the i7 M70 xDrive with a combined 749lb ft of torque, with up to 811lb ft available for short periods of full-throttle acceleration when the new model's M Launch Control and M Sport Boost functions are activated.

By comparison, the dual motor electric drivetrain used by the standard i7 xDrive60 develops 536kW and 549lb ft.

It also looks rad, has an amazing interior and might be among the coolest cars BMW makes.

The BMW i7 is not only one of the coolest luxury EVs on sale today, but it’s got one of the best interiors in the business, and now, according to an announcement made by BMW on Monday, it’s earned itself some performance chops, too, with the introduction of the 2024 BMW i7 M70 xDrive.

As usual, that name is a veritable cornucopia of alphanumerics, but what it means is that this particular electric luxobarge comes packing a not-insubstantial 650 hp and up to 811 lb-ft of torque, which BMW claims is good for a 0-60 sprint of just 3.5 seconds. Is it Tesla Plaid or Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance quick? No, but it’s also not exactly slow either.

The downside of having a big, powerful luxury EV is that unless you pack a crap ton of batteries into it, the range isn’t going to be stellar, and that’s the case here. Preliminary range estimates from the EPA peg the i7 M70's range at just 295 miles. Is it terrible? No. Is it plenty for 99 percent of people 99 percent of the time? Probably. Is it going to give some potential buyers pause? You bet your ass it is.

The fastest electric BMW M car yet is this 650bhp dual-motor 7 Series

To entirely misquote Mission Impossible: Fallout, the electric BMW 7 Series appears to be Halloween; a bunch of electric horsepower in a mask playing trick or treat. And if you've yet to see that film, no matter – you can pop it on the ginormous rear cinema screen while your driver attempts to replay its audacious stunts. This is the BMW i7 M70 xDrive, which just happens to be the fastest electrically motivated 7 Series on sale.

Big car, big numbers. The M70 sports BMW’s fifth-gen electric drivetrain, though here the motors have been tweaked over the M60 version, by doubling the excitation windings in the stator (six in the M70 versus three in the M60. Very Excite indeed). Which means the rear axle now features BMW’s most powerful electric motor. There’s a slightly less-powerful e-motor on the front.

In a bid to escape its own face then, this AWD capability allows the i7 to accelerate from 0-62mph in just 3.7s, thanks to total system outputs of 650bhp and 748lb ft of torque – 811lb ft in fact, when in ‘M Launch Control/M Sport Boost’ mode. Top speed is a limited 155mph.

Dial it all down and BMW reckons on a range of between 303-348 miles (WLTP) thanks to a 101.7kWh (usable) battery on board the i7 M70. Find a DC charger and it’s able to accept up to 195kW meaning 100+ miles of range in ten minutes.

The BMW i7 M70 xDrive is the most powerful model with an all-electric drive system in the overall BMW Group portfolio. Equipped with an electric motor at both the front and rear axle generating a maximum system output of 485 kW/660 hp and an M-specific chassis, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive delivers the perfect combination of electric mobility and performance, resulting in a driving experience unique in the luxury segment. The range-topping model of the new BMW 7 Series line-up accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds, making it the fastest all-electric BMW model. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).

Producing the highest output ever for an all-electric car from the BMW Group, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive marks another milestone for BMW M GmbH in its electric mobility transformation. Following the launch of the BMW i4 M50 - BMW M GmbH's best-selling model worldwide in 2022 - and the BMW iX M60, this is now the company's third performance model to have an all-electric drive system. The success of electric propulsion among BMW M brand enthusiasts, the consistent expansion of the product offering and the repeated increases in drive system output clearly highlight the huge potential of electric tech to deliver performance that captures the imagination.

The new all-electric performance model from BMW M made its global debut at the 2023 Auto Shanghai international motor show in China. It will be built at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, together with all other model variants of the luxury sedan. As well as being the lead plant for luxury models, the production facility in Lower Bavaria is also home to the competence centre for electric drive system production, which manufactures both the electric motors and the high-voltage batteries for all variants of the BMW i7 on site. The worldwide launch of the BMW i7 M70 xDrive will start in the second half of 2023.

The all-new BMW 7 Series and the all-electric i7 xDrive60 arrived in South Africa this year but a more potent i7 M70 has now been revealed at Auto Shanghai in China boasting 485 kW and 1 100 Nm of tar-twisting torque!

With the most powerful rear axle electric motor in BMW’s arsenal now pumping out 360 kW and combining with a 190 kW front-axle electric motor, the i7 M70 delivers all-wheel drive capability and rockets from zero to 100 kph in about 3.5 seconds!

The electric powertrain also includes a high-capacity 105.7 kWh battery pack which results in an estimated driving range of 475 km. Using a 195 kW DC fast charger, the i7 M70 can charge from 10% to 80% in about 34 minutes. 11 kW AC charging can also be used to charge the i70 M70 using a home charger.

This year’s Shanghai Auto Show is all about electric power, and BMW is certainly laying that on thick and fast with the world debut of its most potent EV to date.

Revealed on Monday, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive has a twin-motor, all-wheel drive powertrain that generates a system output of 485kW, which is a significant improvement over the i7 M60’s 400kW tally.

But the torque conversation is even more impressive, with BMW claiming a system output of 1 015Nm, increasing momentarily to 1 100Nm when the M sport boost function or launch control are activated.

Speaking of off-the-line acceleration, the i7 M70 will surge from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.7 seconds, according to BMW. But the top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h.

With the M launch control function, both drive and traction control are integrated into the engine control unit. This ensures the power generated by the electric motors is metered extremely precisely, allowing the drive system’s M-typical performance characteristics to be instantly converted into rapid acceleration without any loss of traction.

A 5.39-meter sedan that weighs well over 3 metric tons and yet it manages to deal with the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in just 3.7 seconds - the experience must be mind-blowing. The BMW i7 M70 xDrive has officially become the fastest electric BMW and with this kind of performance, it starts seeping on the toes of its smaller siblings from the M division.

Electric cars still feel relatively new, electric BMWs appear to be rare but only until we realize that the electric powertrain on this i7 is already in its fifth generation. That’s right, BMW i7 M70 sports the fifth generation eDrive - new electric motors, improved battery, and power electronics. That means not only a faster car but faster charging, longer range, and better packaging which results in yet more room.

Since this eDrive comes from the M division it has been redesigned for more power. Both motors do not use any rare earth metals but instead are electrically excited. Add to it integrated dual inverters and integrated transmission and we end up with a motor that has 25% more power density than the same unit on the BMW i7 xDrive60. That new motor powers the rear axle on the i7 M70 while the front unit is the same as on the standard i7.

The figures are quite staggering - the peak power output of the rear motor is 489 hp (360 kW), and the front motor throws in an additional 258 hp (190 kW). The power-sharing results in 660 hp output (468 kW) and 1,015 Nm torque which goes up to 1,100 Nm when Launch Control is engaged. That explains the car’s gravity-defying 3.7 seconds sprint to 100 km/h.

All that power is nothing though without a good chassis. The M-tuned suspension delivers exceptionally sporty handling, according to BMW. The company apparently achieved a perfect balance between handling and comfort without the latter suffering at all. The adaptive two-axle air suspension is standard on the i7 M70 and comes with electronically controlled dampers.


 
650 HP (486 kW) BMW i7 M70 xDrive Not Heading For South Africa

BMW took the covers off the potent 2024 i7 M70 xDrive model recently and although the worldwide launch is only taking place in the second half of the year, BMW South Africa has confirmed that this model will not be making its way here.

The new i7 M70 xDrive features BMW‘s most powerful electric motor achieved by double the number of excitation windings from three to six. The rear one produces 483 horsepower, which works with the 255-hp front-axle motor to give the EV a combined output of 650 hp (486 kW) and 1,014 Nm (748 lb-ft) of torque.

Activate the M Sport Boost (Launch Control) and the torque climbs to 1,100 Nm (811 lb-ft) allowing the electric sedan to sprint to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds. Despite its size, this is now BMW’s quickest fully electric model.
