Kia's electric vehicle sales soared to unprecedented heights in May, fueled by the successful launch of its groundbreaking three-row electric SUV, the EV9. This surge propelled the automaker to its second-best sales month ever in the US market, solidifying its position as a formidable player in the growing EV landscape.

A significant contributor to this remarkable achievement was the EV9 itself, which sold an impressive 2,187 units in May, marking a substantial 39% increase compared to the previous month. Kia's overall EV sales experienced an astounding 127% growth, totaling 7,197 vehicles sold. This remarkable feat sets a new record for the company and underscores the growing consumer appetite for electric SUVs.

Features that you pay for and download to your vehicle are slowly becoming a thing with EVs. Both Cadillac and Ford have done it with the Lyriq and Mustang Mach-E. And now Kia is doing it with its EV9 SUV. MotorTrend is currently long-term testing an EV9. As part of the test, they decided to try out every OTA feature the EV comes with by purchasing every single one in a rather pricey endeavor to see whether or not any of these features were worth the cost.

While MotorTrend listed what features they purchased in order of cost from highest to lowest, it’s not quite that simple. Purchasing the features is done through Kia’s Connect Store, an app store built into the EV9’s infotainment system. However, accessing the store requires activating Kia Connect which comes in four monthly plans. The basic plan is free. The other plans range in cost from $5.99/month or $59/annually to $19.99/month or $199/annually. In addition to accessing the store, you get what MotorTrend described as useful features like the ability to see the car’s surroundings using a 360-degree view from the camera system, vehicle charge level, battery preconditioning and regular map updates for the nav system. Luckily Kia Connect comes free with a three-year trial before you have to pay.

We thought the standard EV9 was Kia’s final boss… but we were wrong. This is the EV9 GT, Kia’s true endgame boss, dressed up with more aggressive bumpers, neon green accents and 21in alloy wheels. But, more importantly, twin electric motors producing a grand total of 494bhp.

Unveiled at the LA Auto Show, Kia says that it's targeting a 0-60mph sprint time of just 4.3s (0.7s quicker than the 380bhp GT-Line S). That’s brisk for a three-row mega-SUV that’ll happily rival Final Fantasy’s biggest and baddest for sheer presence.

Paired with an electronic limited-slip differential and bigger brakes, this thing should have all it needs for when things get twisty. And when they do, the adaptive suspension - a first for any Kia SUV - will adjust the damping (and steering/braking feel) via the different drive modes.

Clearly taking inspiration from the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, you’ll also get a 'Virtual Gear Shift' as standard, which mimics a paddleshift gearbox and gives you a fake redline and a slight delay in acceleration as you perform a virtual upshift. That works alongside the 'Active Sound Design' (or fake noise, as it’s known to most of us) to try and weave some sporting feel into the EV9.

The Kia EV9 has already made a name for itself as a practical and luxurious electric SUV, but Kia is turning up the heat with the introduction of the EV9 GT. Unlike the GT-Line version, this performance-oriented variant boasts a substantial power boost and a range of enhancements designed to elevate the driving experience. Unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the EV9 GT promises to be a thrilling addition to the electric vehicle market.

While the standard all-wheel drive EV9 delivers a respectable combined power output of 378 horsepower, the GT takes things to a whole new level. With a more potent front motor generating 214 horsepower and a rear motor delivering 362 horsepower, the EV9 GT has a combined output of 501 horsepower, according to Kia. Although the numbers don't add up, the official figure promises plenty of fun. The power translates to improved acceleration, with Kia claiming a 0-60 mph time of just 4.3 seconds. That's significantly quicker than the EV9 GT-Line AWD.

The EV9 GT receives a comprehensive suite of upgrades to handle the increased power. Larger brakes improve stopping power, while an upgraded suspension with adaptive dampers ensures optimal handling and stability. The EV9 GT also rides on 21-inch wheels wrapped in Continental tires and features an electronic rear limited-slip differential for improved traction and cornering prowess.
