Faster and cheaper than a Golf GTI: Volvo EX30 electric car lands in South Africa

The first examples of the new Volvo EX30 electric car have hit South African shores, and with that the importer has released full details on the local line-up.

Starting at R775,900, the entry-level EX30 is one of the most affordable EVs in the country, beaten only by the GWM Ora 03, from R696,950 and the BYD Atto 7 that kicks off at R768,000.

Volvo EX30 buyers certainly do get considerable performance for the money, with the Core Single Motor, rear-wheel drive base version offering 200kW and 343Nm, which the carmaker claims is sufficient for a 5.7 second 0-100km/h sprint.

Now consider this. The EX30 base model is R900 cheaper than a base-spec Volkswagen GTI and also 0.7 seconds faster from 0-100, which takes a claimed 6.4 seconds in the VeeDub.

As for battery life, the Volvo base model has a 51 kWh battery pack that boasts a clamed range of 344km on the WLTP cycle.

All EX30 models are sold with a 5-year/100 000km warranty and maintenance plan and unlimited mileage roadside assist for five years. The battery pack is covered for eight years.

Volvo’s innovative all-electric EX30 touches down in Mzansi

Volvo South Africa wants to shake up the electric car market in South Africa with its all-new EX30, which launches this week.

Volvo’s XC40 Recharge was the nation’s best-selling fully electric vehicle in 2023, and the more affordable EX30 looks poised to improve on its larger sibling’s numbers in 2024. It attracted 150 pre-orders when the order books opened late last year, and 52 units were registered in the country last month, according to Naamsa.

With prices starting at R775,900 and topping out at R995,900, the new Volvo EX30 is the third most affordable EV in South Africa, beaten only by the GWM Ora 03 and BYD Atto 3. Like these models the new Swedish crossover is also built in China.

“Rather than providing just a single powertrain-and-battery combination, we’ve opted to include a pair of battery sizes as well as both single- and twin-motor configurations, giving the customer as much choice as possible,” says Volvo Car SA Managing Director Greg Maruszewski.

Volvo is considering revisions to the controversial multimedia software in the new EX30 compact crossover - but not until it has received data and feedback from customers.

The new machine has been largely stripped of physical controls, with most key functions accessed through the large touchscreen. But the functionality of the software was widely criticised by reviewers when the car was launched.

Reports last month suggested that cars were being withheld from customers on European dealer forecourts while key software updates were performed, but the company has told Autocar that these were only detail improvements rather than changes to menu structure or functions accessibility.

Some left-hand-drive cars in European markets were delayed from getting to their owners while software was updated by dealers, Volvo said, but UK customer deliveries (which were always planned for early March, with the country’s registration plate change) haven’t been affected.

In-depth verdicts on the EX30, evaluated on UK roads, are due to appear next week. However, just because the car’s multimedia software is considered ready for customers, it does not mean it won’t continue to improve, according to Akhil Krishnan, global head of small car programs for Volvo.

“The software revision we’ve just rolled out ahead of European deliveries is what we call v1.21,” Krishnan said. “It was mostly about detail refinements, among which was making the car’s low-speed ‘pedestrian safety noise’ slightly quieter, because we had regulatory room to do that.
