So effectively you now have 2 promo 5 deals.

Not much of an upgrade. Everyone has routers/ dongles.

At least its month to month.

very BIG upgrade for me , mine was 10Gig anytime NO 10 Gig after hours.
now i have 20Gigs plus 20Gigs after hours
and its month to month so no strings of a 2 year contract.

So you're a late bloomer because my contract just expired after 4 years.
2 years with only 10gig and then I got another 2 with the 10g MS for the same price.

Good deal if you can't get ADSL.

SmartBroadband Coverage

I want to get the 20+20 R399 24 month deal but I travel a lot.
Has anyone tried to use their connection outside the Telkom Internet area. Does it roam on 3G (MTN outside major cities) like my phone does?
Thanks,
Al

Great Deal
The 100+100 for R999 = R5/gig - unbelievable.
But watch your cap - they charge you R290/gig if you go over the cap - does that seem fair when you can buy one gig for R99?

I've heard that Telkom Mobile doesn't go OOB unless you allow it too. It will stop once you've reached your cap and then it will ask if you want to continue.

Thanks - They just say "Out of bundle rate for data: R0.29 per MB"

Yep they allow you to buy a bundle once you reach your cap. I've never had the oob shark in the 4 years I had my contract

as far as i have experienced , once you reach your cap, you will be taken to a out of bundle page where you have a few choices : continue out of bundle rates 30c/meg for rest of month ( which i sometimes used ) OR buy a bundle Or continue at out of bundle rates Always ( this will hurt your wallet without checking your balances , but you can set a rand value limit on your account so there are no surprises).

I received my upgrade call today but could barely understand the Capetonian and requested the details be emailed to me. Probably misunderstood my email address on their part too. I think R299 for the LTE with dongle. Not sure if I would take it or stick to month to month as R299 could push me towards adsl.

BUYER BEWARE - Misleading Advertising.
Found my answer. SmartBroadband deals ONLY available on Telkom's network - which does not cover most of SA. This restriction is not shown in the advertised deals. Once you sign up for two years - it's your problem if you find yourself without coverage. Telkom have been promising major network expansion since 8TA was announced five years ago but it is still pathetically restricted to the major centers - no country-wide cellular network. Their cellphone customers roam on the MTN network - but data is expensive. I get MTN 3G at home with 3-6Meg speed on Speedtest which I would have been happy with and assumed it would be the same from Telkom.

The "More Info" Page mentions nothing about network restrictions - misleading advertising.
I finally found it in the Terms And Conditions - and who reads those details when you sign a new cell contract in a shop? You accept you are signing for a deal "as advertised".

Here is the "fine print".
"Subscription to Telkom’s SmartBroadband Wireless service is subject to the availability of its LTE network coverage within the specified location and the subscriber will not be able to roam on MTN’s 3G network."

I don't think the SmartBroadband deals were designed to be mobile. They are more likely for home users who doesn't have access to physical lines or who don't want cables running into their homes.

The benefit of this product is that it will work out of the box.

Hi Lara,
It's a "Home" solution - but there are a lot of homes not covered by the Telkom network. An existing Telkom cell phone customer might assume this will work because he has 3G data at home on his phone because his phone is using the MTN network.

It will only work "out of the box" if your home has Telkom network coverage - without adding roof aerials etc.

It should be clearly advertised as "Telkom Network Only".

They added it in the terms and conditions. You highlighted it as "Fine print".

You have to accept that it is how advertising works. :(

Just received an alarming call from a sales agent in the call centre. Basically they are offering me bigger data packages but also at the same time advise me if I do not upgrade i will now be paying 299 per month for my internet promo 5 instead of the 199 i have been paying all this time.

What is this about?

I have also sent a message to Telkom rep on this.

Yip I got that same scare tactic months ago(I have also been month to month contract after the original 2yr came to an end) , yet here I am still paying R199/pm for 10+10gb.
Just ignore it, they are using very dubious tactics to try convince people to pay more.

Highly doubt they will change your package or cancel it, to increase your monthly amount/change the contract terms would involve them having to re-sign every single contract. They already have us as a captive market, I can't see them fiddling with the golden goose, which is what we are of sorts.
