Hi guys, I’m new to this forum and I would like to share some thing with you.

We used to have one of the bonded/bundled ADSL broadband solutions. We had 4 lines 4Mb lines bundled giving us a theoretical speed of 16Mb/s. In short it’s not stable and bandwidth is costly. I embarked on a mission of upgrading this.

At first I thought fibre was the solution – here prices I was quoted from a couple of well known ISP. I’m leaving out who quoted what, some of it was confidential…

ISP # 1 prices exl VAT
20mb Service Incl Local/Int Bandwidth & Cisco 2921 Router
12 Month Contract
Set-up Cost: R 19 500.00
Monthly Cost: R 40 570.00
24 Month Contract
Set-up Cost: R 19 500.00
Monthly Cost: R 37 985.00
I’m not sure what the cap was on this quote – it doesn’t say.

ISP # 2 prices exl VAT
20mb Service Incl Local/Int Bandwidth Dedicated
1:1

12 Month Contract
Set-up Cost: R 20,000.00
Monthly Cost: R 28,900.00
This was capped at 300GB (they quoted that on 120GB the first time around). I also received the special offer: 20Mbps uncapped = R60,000pm

ISP # 3 prices exl VAT
20mb Service Incl Local/Int Bandwidth Dedicated
1:1

12 Month Contract
Set-up Cost: R 20,810.00
Monthly Cost: R 23,059.86
This was capped at 100GB

Now on to the good stuff.

Wireless Options:

ISP # 4 20Mb/s
Installation cost: R1500 (what? No 20k fee!!)
Monthly fee: R15130
Cap: 3TB!! yes terra bites. 3000GB, that is three thousand GB

I went with ISP # 5. Their installation cost was a bit more at R3600, but the monthly fee is close to that of ISP # 4. Also 3 TB of data and it is 1:1.

All in all the wireless is proving more stable than what the ADSL lines were and more cost effective.

I am getting 20Mb/s up and down. I will upload some speed tests if any one is interested.

That wireless option... what kind of contention ratio, upload speeds and uptime/SLA's are we talking about?

Contentino ratio is 1:1, 20Mb up and down. SLA is 99.something % uptime, but then you need a second dish pointed to another high site. That increases the cost allot. I opted out of that, I have my own failover.

I downloaded CentOS with torrents the other day, I was getting 1.6MB/s (megabytes not bits – that would have sucked). Can’t really complain about that.

I know you don't want to share who these ISPs were, but can you point me into the right direction for getting a wireless account with decent speeds and stability?

What is your local/international latency like?

I don't know who does it in Joburg, sorry, unless your in Midrand?

I should have said this is in Cape Town, I'm not sure who has high sites up there and provides wireless connectivity?

I am actually in Midrand :-)

Can't get ADSL and need a good and reliable connection, but 20mbps is overkill.

20 Mb/s @ R15000 with 1:1 contention 3TB cap???? :wtf: We have an offering from Iburst that is excellent but can't even come close to this. Thanks for the share!

How reliable is the wireless option?

I suppose you get a couple of public IPv4 addresses too that you can route yourself?

We're now in the process of replacing our microwave link with a fibre link because the microwave link influenced pretty badly during poor weather.

Yes, got 5 IP's, weather does not seem to affect it, but we are not far from the high site. Not sure if it makes a difference.

You work for an ISP? What is your interest in this?

Indeed I do work for an ISP. My interest is that I - and I am sure others - want to know who you chose.

If somebody were to call me today and say "I want a 20Mb wireless", I would like to refer that person to the R15K a month ISP as we aren't going to be offering anything like that in the immediate future.

Why not?

I have been trying to figure out how ISP’s determine their prices ever since this started and the best I can come up with is thumb sucking and then a couple of conspiracy theories.
