What I mean is that I generally operate in all or nothing mode - Which is not ideal I agree, it's just how my brain works. I'm not sure that doing it bit by bit is going to influence long term results. Why would it? :D
Well, this is just speculation on my part but I think there are two things at play here, physical and psychological:

On the physical side, your body is going to go through withdrawal from each substance, and the effect each withdrawal has on your body is different, so when you give it all up at once it's a huge knock to the system from many different fronts at the same time.

From a psychological perspective, the all or nothing approach means setting up expectations that you are only successful if you manage to quit everything, otherwise you've failed. So if you have a drink you then think you've failed so you may as well smoke take sugar etc as well, since you've already failed at giving up stuff. If you limit yourself to stopping one thing at a time then you can have a smoke, even though you really want a drink, without feeling like you've failed. Doing it all in one go is just putting huge expectations on yourself which makes it easier to fail.

Quite right you are. It's the psychological aspect that gets me, and you've described it perfectly.

I'm going to have to think about this a bit.

The biggest problem though, is that alcohol is my demon - It's from one light beer in a mindless moment that always leads to everything else, and it's so bloody hard to say no sometimes...

Why do you want to quit all these things?

Nothing wrong with sugar in moderation. Nor with wheat (or is it an allergy?). Alcohol in moderation is a good thing as far as studies can tell thus far.

Suspect a wheat allergy, always feel better when I don't eat it. Sugar is just my general avoidance of stimulants - The combination of both forces me to avoid crap like donuts, cake, etc, etc.

Alcohol in moderation is great, yeah. I cannot do alcohol in moderation though. Although to clarify, I certainly can 90% of the time, but it's that 10% that always leads to trouble...

O cool, I also have a "big night" with the booze every now and again :o

Why not have yourself tested for wheat intollerance? And are you looking to replace refined sugars with a healthier alt?

Not tested, no. Probably should, although as I feel better and lose weight by not eating wheat, I may as well just avoid it regardless.

Replacing refined sugars... Well, if I need sweet stuff then I'll see, but generally, when I'm in this 'health mode', there's no reason to have sweet stuff anyway, aside from fruit.

Sugar-wise though, I'm not obsessive about it, there's so much sugar in so many things - Just want to avoid to bulk of it.

Nice. Good for you trying to make a lifestyle change.

Good luck.
