Well, this is just speculation on my part but I think there are two things at play here, physical and psychological:What I mean is that I generally operate in all or nothing mode - Which is not ideal I agree, it's just how my brain works. I'm not sure that doing it bit by bit is going to influence long term results. Why would it?![]()
On the physical side, your body is going to go through withdrawal from each substance, and the effect each withdrawal has on your body is different, so when you give it all up at once it's a huge knock to the system from many different fronts at the same time.
From a psychological perspective, the all or nothing approach means setting up expectations that you are only successful if you manage to quit everything, otherwise you've failed. So if you have a drink you then think you've failed so you may as well smoke take sugar etc as well, since you've already failed at giving up stuff. If you limit yourself to stopping one thing at a time then you can have a smoke, even though you really want a drink, without feeling like you've failed. Doing it all in one go is just putting huge expectations on yourself which makes it easier to fail.
