I see what your saying but i think people are going crazy over nothing for the moment. This is far from an epidemic, an epidemic is when people are dropping dead and the virus is infecting thousands a day. That is far from the case.

pandemic > epidemic. We're in the midst of a pandemic. It's more to do with the spread and number of infected rather than how many are dropping dead from it.

Strange though avian flu comes from birds but swine flu does not come from pigs :D, whoever named it swine flu is being hunted by the egypians :D

It's thought to have originated from pigs.
Experts now assume that the virus "most likely" emerged from pigs in Asia, and the virus was carried to North America by infected people.

36,000 people in the US alone die from flu related complications each year.

I'm not saying swine flu is worse than aids. I'm just not sure what aids has got to do with the fact that 30 people now has swine flu. But would you like me to start a thread on aids?
 
We were on 32 cases yesterday.
This morning we are on 47 cases.
It is spreading rapidly.
 
It also seems as if there is concern that the original virus might have mutated.

This information below from Dr. Niman is very concerning. After examining the quick spread of A/H1N1 is anything going to be done differently to slow the spread of a more fatal virus if a mutation does occur?
This gives me even more reason to push for a petition for better flu data.

These data indicate the death tally has tripled in the past week and is among the highest in the world (behind the United States and Mexico). However, the cases in Argentina developed very recently, raising concerns that the virus has changed.

To date, there is only one partial pandemic H1N1 MP sequence at Genbank or GISAID. It was collected in April and is identical to a large number of public sequences. However, there are no sequences representing the recent fatalities or June precursors to H1N1 associated with the recent fatalities.

The rapid rise in cases and the failure to provide timely sequence data continues to increase pandemic concerns of an evolving H1N1 that is largely missed by current surveillance approaches.

HOUSTON - Even though the panic seems to have faded, the number of swine flu cases has just jumped dramatically.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the most significant increase in reported U.S. activity came at the end of June, months after the initial scare. U.S. deaths jumped 34 percent to 170 in just the past week.

"We don't have any evidence that it's mutated yet, but I'm concerned the mutation may be taking place. The children seem to me to be getting much more sicker than they used to be one or two months ago," said Dr. Norris Payne, a Houston pediatrician.

He's seeing three or four new cases of swine flu each day.

Dr. Payne is the pediatrician for FOX 26 anchor Melissa Wilson's two year old son. Melissa's son has been diagnosed with swine flu.

Over the weekend, she says, "He was belligerent. He would not stop crying." His fever had soared to 105 degrees.

"Flu season is over, but this is the first time in 30 years I've seen flu in the summer," said Dr. Payne.

For now, the antiviral tamiflu still seems to be working.

Melissa says, "If you have a child with a fever in the middle of summer, that's odd. I would get help immediately."

Dr. Payne believes the cases he's seeing could be just the tip of the iceberg. The CDC estimates more than a million Americans have been infected with the virus, though many probably had a mild illness.

A vaccine is still being developed but could become available sometime in the fall.

That's is why I want to know what makes this virus different from the seasonal flu virus. All people diagnosed with the virus was just told to stay home and take medication.

And IIRC, all the fatalities reported in the beginning was due to other underlying conditions combined with the virus. Like diabetes, heart problems, etc.

Only thing I can think of, is the fact that it spreads easier and that there is no vaccine available for it. Even normal flu vaccines are not that effective.
Other than that, this seems like a common flu virus.
Stay home, get it out of your system and hope you don't catch it again.

No my point was that we are all making threads and worrying about 30 infected people with flu, which may or may not be swine flu while millions are infected with aids and thousands die each month.

Just pointing out there are worse things in this country than 30 infected flu people.

47 as of last night.
With our aids figures, most aids sufferers do not have the immunity to fight any virus.
Can you imagine the number of deaths we as a country face?
Millions might die. This is indeed a pandemic.
 
And if this virus is mutating into a super-virus... That's scary. See, how swine affects me more than aids is the fact that I know I won't get aids because I don't sleep around, whereas I can get infected with a mutated form of H1N1 by any person in public. And the number of people who can possibly infect me multiplies.

What makes swine flu different from normal flu? Upon reading an article this very morning I learnt that the common flu can be fought off by your body's imune system whilst the human body contains no imunity against the H1N1 virus. You need to take the medication to be cured. The big problem is that most people who has H1N1 thinks that they have the common flu and thus doesn't get the necessary treatment, which could lead to their deaths. The symptoms of H1N1 is similar to common flu, just prolonged. Guess you can start to worry when your symptoms get worse after a week.
 
Nobody outside Mexico with the exception of 2 or 3 americans have died from it though. It's just a flu that we don't have a strong immunity against. Majority of people who catch it require no hospital admittance. So it is slightly overdramatised.

The world could do with a few billion less human beans. But I doubt swine flu is going to do it. Unfortunately :(

Since Friday 03-07-09 The number of infected patients have risen from 33,902 cases in the US to 36,673 as of last night.
That is 2771 new cases since Friday in the US alone.

Swine Flu is the answer to all of Africa's problems, Swine Flu is not virulent, as long as you have a working immune system, and have access to medical care to get anti-viral drugs.

Therefore, if Swine Flu is spread properly, us people with money will be able to go to our private hospitals or doctors or the medicross up the road and get some Tamiflu and be treated, and of course we can afford to take the ten days off work, stay at home and watch the repeats on DSTV :D

People dying of Aids ( yes I said it, I said it in Pretoria, I said it on Mybroadband ( with respect to : Chris Rock ) ) and people with no access to health care or DSTV will die of the disease.

So only the rich will survive, less of us, more money to share, and no more Aids
